Hey guys!

So far, I am VERY happy with Super and the way it turned out. I am thinking about maining Dee Jay, since he's a blast to play (and I think he has some great defensive and offensive options), but I hear that Adon is also good and is considered Ryu's nightmare. At least that's what I was told. LOL.

So many characters...I am really liking Juri and Hakan though. They both have unique **** and options to play around with.

Also, someone said something about the visuals earlier and how they were polished. They weren't kidding. The new stages look great, especially the solar eclipse stage - that was an impressive stage to look at while fighting!

Hopefully, once I figure out my main, I'll let you guys know and soon, we need to get together and play this through the Endless Battle mode.

Metamania

Yeah, DeeJay really is rad. Have you done his trials yet? He's got some cool ****.

Right on, man. I was pretty bummed to see there are not combo demos as well. Considering some of them are very, very tricky - and I don't just mean timing, here - I'd think they'd have insisted on it. Ah well.

Don't let all the frame stuff overwhelm you. In practice, you don't really need to think about that stuff. If you play fighting games, you probably already sort of think of it subconsciously anyway, and that's fine. There's no need to memorize exact frame data, and it's not like you are expected to (or even can) think in terms of 60ths of seconds anyway. I only brought it up because, like many things that require practice, having a fundamental understanding of what's going on helps a lot. It's more for communication, really.

Half-circle motions can be annoying on a stick at first. Do you find yourself jumping away and/or forward a lot when you try it? That's perfectly normal, and practice will iron that out. It might help to try a few other special cancels just to kinda get your head around what's happening, such as Ryu's sc.FP xx hadoken (standing close to the opponent fierce punch into hadoken), or maybe even Guile's cr.MP xx Flash Kick (crouching medium punch into Flash Kick). Take particular notice of how, when you cancel these moves properly, the recovery animations on the normals go away, and the special moves come out instead. Same thing happens with the Dudley combo.

Hope that's helpful, man. Definitely down to keep giving tips if you need 'em.

EDIT: I'm explaining all the notation and stuff for anyone else reading this who might not know what it all means. Not trying to be condescending or anything.

What prompted me to get the stick was The Challenges, specifically.

I was trying to do Dudley's Standing Medium to Machine Gun Blow and just COULD NOT pull it off with a pad!

I am STILL having trouble with a stick! Maybe I am going about it the wrong way? Am I supposed to Connect with Medium, Hold MP, then do the HCF, then release? Or am I supposed to do one move (quickly) after the other...?

________________

I am having SUPER amounts of trouble getting the D, F, DF motion with a stick too!

________________

Do people start off counting clicks with a stick? I know it sounds kinda strange, but when trying to learn Dudley's Duck doing the motion of B, DB, D, DF, F you hear 5 distinct 'clicks' on the stick and it's kinda getting me oriented with the placement...

Do people actually DO that... I'm looking for any tricks to ease the adjustment period!

Phantom_Leo

You're going about it fine, I'm sure. Check it out. Pay close attention to the animation on that s.MP of Dudley's. All the movement before the hit is the startup frames. The hit itself shows the active frames. And finally, there's the kind of idle animation after the hit where Dudley goes back into his normal stance - those are the recovery frames, and recovery frames are what you cancel with this combo you're doing.

Short answer: go faster

Long, overly-technical answer: To get that cancel to work, you have to input your special move so that it starts right when the active frames are over/recovery frames begin (same thing). You can do this the way you described (holding the button, inputting the motion, then releasing the button - it's called negative edge), but it's not necessary, and personally, I find it harder. Or you can do it the old-fashioned way: hit s.MP, input the qcf during the active frames (or, right when the hit lands), then tap the punch button to finish the move.

I've never heard of anyone using the clicks to help learn the stick, but I don't see why it's a bad idea. If you're having trouble doing motions on it, that's normal, and nothing makes it immediately easier, per se. However, if you play on a solid surface with the stick in the same spot every time, that helps. Don't lose hope just yet, whatever you do. The stick helps a lot, but it's not an immediate cure-all, and the adjustment time SUCKS. Once you get it, though, you'll never look back.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and estimate that 100% of the people who start this thread (because let's face it, it's not nearly the first) prefer MK over SF.

Anyway, Mortal Kombat tends to be pretend, half-ass fighting games that are all about LOLs. Street Fighter (the good ones) are real fighting games that are worth playing and honing skills in. My opinions.

If Kreatzion and I are getting the XB360 versions, are you guys also getting the 360 version or just getting the PS3 version?

Metamania

I'm getting the 360 version, and I'm pretty much positive DC will also. Let's split up into teams right now and figure out a tournament.

Guile could already combo EX. Flash Kick from d/f RH and combo backhand fist from Sonic Booms. That's nothing new. I like that his charge time is different. I wonder if that will entail his Ultra I and Ultra II charge times as well. Faster Sonic Booms and more damage is great. I don't know if I'll stick with Guile in SSFIV since Dee Jay might be a better substitute but I'll go back into the lab and practice those linksfor a tourney I plan on attending on April 30th. I doubt I'd get enough time to whip my T. Hawk in shape so might as well go with what I know on my first try.

DarkCatalyst

Right? Kinda like how Seth said "Gen gets a free Ultra from any wall dive kick that lands," as though it were something new. Oh well. Even with all my hate going on full blast, even I can't help but be excited over the upcoming release. No-good emmer-effing lifetime addiction...

FWIW, I'm starting to think I might be able to get my mindset right to feel like playing on day one, if that helps.

Heck yeah, man. Let's get the game day-one (as I've vowed again and again not to do), drink some booze and play an epic set with every character. Anyone else down?

[QUOTE="ShenlongBo"]Think about it in the inverse. Guys like me might ask "why spend all that time 'leveling up' a character in Fallout 3 when I - the player - can invest time in making myself better at something?" For me, "getting stronger" in a game like Fallout 3 is... imaginary. It is, at least, when I compare it to leveling myself up in fighting games. It's all about perspective and preference.muthsera666
I guess for me, part of it is the ability to see the on-screen character grow. The increase of the level number, the stronger the character, the more completed quests, etc. Things like those are trackable, they're concrete (though virtual). Increasing the skill of myself, the player, is only seen by a manifestation in the game, and as such, it's actually less visible. This is just my perspective.

Less visible, maybe, but no less palpable. I've had few gaming achievements in my entire life that compare to finally beating Street Fighter pro and Evo finalist JR Rodriguez at SFIV (our total match count shows him beating me like 10-to-1, but still). I love me some RPGs, shooters, racers, you name it, but that kind of victory is a testament to my hard work, as well as the coming-of-age of ME as a player. That's just something a L100 Pokemon can't begin to compete with.

[QUOTE="DarkCatalyst"][QUOTE="muthsera666"]My point is to question how to make it enticing in order to attract more people to the genre. I like RPGs because there is incentive to keep going: becoming stronger, learning more of the story, seeing the world. I like FPS games because of the different enemies and the different weapons. But why invest so much time into a fighting game instead of these other games? What would make it worth my while, or anyone else's, to learn the combos to become a better player?muthsera666
Tournament play, the rewarding sense of becoming a better player. That's not for everybody, but it is for several.

I guess I see your point, but like you say, it's not for everyone. Thanks for an explanation, though. :)

I know you guys aren't arguing, but I wanted to chime in.

Just wanted to say that I beat LI Joe at China Town Fair in a casual match. I am so proud of myself. Not trying to be big headed but I can't help but brag that this once in a life time situation happened.

Kreatzion

That's ****in' badass, bro. Who was he using?

His Sagat! I beat him with my Guile. I'll be honest, I have never played a Sagat so tight and on its A game like his. I was sweating bullets.

O_O

Hoooollly ********! Dude, that's one helluva nice achievement. Very nice. I gotta see this Guile once I get back online.
