[QUOTE="Shoitaan"]This game has random encounters and the old "three dudes standing in a line hitting three other dudes standing in a line" like in all but the latest FF's. That particular fighting style really bothers me..sadly even Blue Dragon is like that...Bugger all JRPGs approach combat in a different way, and sadly I think its going to be like that for a long time - if not forever:(plainoldsamHm, you haven't been keeping up with the news? Lost Odyssey is having a couple twists in it's combat system. Yes, it's still turn based, but it's got some other twists like a wall system, and timing based analog trigger system for physical attacks. If you're still interested in Lost Odyssey, I think you should read what changes they made.
Was watching some movies so its 3am and I'm too slack to look it up now but I'll give it a go later. I dunno about this 'wall system' but the other system you described seems like that guntrigger nonsense FF8 had. I'm sure a JRPG purist will express at length how that 'totally' revolutionises the (imo) stale combat systems in these games but to me its just an added gimmick. They could do a grid based combat system like Enchanted Arms or apply a grid to the entire world and have the combat on location like a cross between chronno trigger and FF: Tactics or even do the slight movement thing that Grandia did but no.. its the same ol' thing with added button pressing at certain times. Maybe I'm just jaded but I'm not impressed.
I'll look up the features you mentioned to see if its a guntrigger-esque thing or not but I don't have my hopes up for much :/
Sorry about spelling and grammer but like I said, its 3am. I'll look this stuff up tommorows ;)
