[QUOTE="Shoitaan"]This game has random encounters and the old "three dudes standing in a line hitting three other dudes standing in a line" like in all but the latest FF's. That particular fighting style really bothers me..sadly even Blue Dragon is like that...Bugger all JRPGs approach combat in a different way, and sadly I think its going to be like that for a long time - if not forever:(plainoldsam
Hm, you haven't been keeping up with the news? Lost Odyssey is having a couple twists in it's combat system. Yes, it's still turn based, but it's got some other twists like a wall system, and timing based analog trigger system for physical attacks. If you're still interested in Lost Odyssey, I think you should read what changes they made.

Was watching some movies so its 3am and I'm too slack to look it up now but I'll give it a go later. I dunno about this 'wall system' but the other system you described seems like that guntrigger nonsense FF8 had. I'm sure a JRPG purist will express at length how that 'totally' revolutionises the (imo) stale combat systems in these games but to me its just an added gimmick. They could do a grid based combat system like Enchanted Arms or apply a grid to the entire world and have the combat on location like a cross between chronno trigger and FF: Tactics or even do the slight movement thing that Grandia did but no.. its the same ol' thing with added button pressing at certain times. Maybe I'm just jaded but I'm not impressed.
I'll look up the features you mentioned to see if its a guntrigger-esque thing or not but I don't have my hopes up for much :/

Sorry about spelling and grammer but like I said, its 3am. I'll look this stuff up tommorows ;)

I'll be picking this game up even if I'm a frequent basher of most JRPGs simply because I love the steampunk setting. That being said, its still a little too "every other JRPG" for my tastes. I don't mind random encounters provided the combat is interesting and fun like it was in Enchanted Arms (not the best game but the grid based fighting was awesome). This game has random encounters and the old "three dudes standing in a line hitting three other dudes standing in a line" like in all but the latest FF's. That particular fighting style really bothers me..sadly even Blue Dragon is like that...Bugger all JRPGs approach combat in a different way, and sadly I think its going to be like that for a long time - if not forever:(

Kinda sad to think that Chronno Trigger, a game made *so* very long ago on the Snes systems had so much innovation and originality in story and gamrplay mechanics over fellow JRPGS that are released with all the fancy bells and whistles in modern times :(

Its ages from release is the feeling I got, and given the issues they've had with the UT3 engine, I think they've had significant production delays. I thought this game was **** from the E3 presentation but late last year when Silicon Knights finally released some more media for the game I was very much interested.
*Very* much looking forward to this game :)

^Its only got a handfull of guns though, and its full price for a game with only 9 maps.

Technically Chromehounds fits the bill as it has weapons propably well into the 100's but.. its not a shooter.. its sort of mech combat simulator (not even arcade mech like mech assault was). Its definately not for everyone but its a great game all the same.

so is this it? 2 years and that's all they got? jhch49

Co-op isn't as big as is should be. ALthough heaps of games have multiplayer, only a few have co-operative modes :)
That being said, the few shooters with co-op out now on the 360 are still more numerous than other systems and previous generations..
Doesn't say much for co-op does it? :(

Haze is a timed PS3 exclusive I heard. the 360 version will be 3-4 months afterwards.
Also Halo 3 as well all heard recently will have 4 player co-op over live..either 4 different consoles or 2 consoles with 2 players each

edit:
And PDZ has some really fun Co-op levels :)

I really don't wanna see another THief. I LOVE the Thief series and the third one ended well storywise. If they made another one, it'd be a cash cow.. Garrot (sp?) was the master thief and he's retired now and trained someone else.. its a story book kinda ending and I would love it kept that way.

I loved Deus Ex but absolutely detested the sequel.. I'd love a 3rd game provided it was more like the original :)

If Oblivion can fit into one disc then other games should be able to aswell. Granted the smaller disc size means there's gonna be some high-res textures we're gonna miss out on but as long as the gameplay is solid, that tiny graphical improvement isn't worth a dime (to me at least). If higher res textures sold consoles.. would the Wii be selling at all? :)
No.. its about the gameplay. A lot of devs need to spend less time on textures and more on gameplay and content (which is getting ridiculously sparse these days in games).

A few years down the track, I think MS could potentially be less anal about "No games requiring HD-DVD or HDD attachments" and maybe then devs might have some more breathing room if they need it.. but seriously.. if you're spending that much discspace or just making the game look shiny.. you're not innovating the gameplay enough..

my 2c :)

I honestly think it might be underhyped. most any website you go to that has e3 awards completely leaves out halo 3.

the games that took home the glory were bioshock, fallout 3, and CoD4

jtparsons54

Unless I'm mistaken, those awards are only given out to games that the reporters were able to get a hands-on preview off. Halo 3 was only shown through trailers and closed door demonstrations (hands-off) so it didn't really qualify.

All that being said, I think the Halo fans have way too high expectations of Halo 3. I didn't experience anything ground breaking in the beta. Same ol' Halo... Hopefully the polish they put on the game before release will make it stand out in some significant way.
