Yeah, just slapping this up here. Heh, thought it made a good excuse for a Blog Post =P
Anyway, I got two new 360 games the other day: FarCry Predator, and Blazing Angels. I havent gotthat far on either of them yet, so i cant say for sure, but i've got some good first impressions.
First, FarCry. To be fair, i got this for the multiplayer play and the map editor (and i've been playing around all morning making maps) THAT bit is good fun. The campaign itself starts off quite fun, but it must just be my rubbishness at it, because I cant go into head to head combat with the enemies - They have Machine Guns where i have a pistol, and they seem to go around in packs of 18 - but i cant use stealth either, because unless you crawl around on your belly at 2 miles per hour, they can magically hear your bush rustle from halfway across the map and open up on you. The laying traps idea is good fun, and i managed to take about 9 people out at once with some well placed traps.. before aciidentally setting one of them off myself and killing myself. Doh. Still, I probably just need practice.
As for Blazing Angels, what i got as part of the 2 for 15 pounds deal at game (it would have cost 10 pounds to get FarCry seperatley, so ithought, meh, might as well) Has actually turned out pretty good. The box art is rubbish, which is why I assumed the game would be too. Dont beleive appearances, kiddywinks. Its a WW2 simulator, with you playing an american pilot who, for some reason, is with the RAF, and even more inexplicably, the rest of your squadron are all yanks too. Still, the gameplay is far superior to the plot stapled over WW2 battles, and after a quick spin on the training level i, rather miraculously, knew everything i needed to know, which is a first for flight similator games (admittedly, i didnt learn about bombing or torpedoes 'till later, but they were remarkably simple) The maps, as well as being historically accurate, are FUN to fly in (my favorite so far is the Battle Of Britain over London) And the graphics are remarkably good - which makes me feel kind of guilty when that Stukka i just shot down flattens someone's house when it crashes.
The controlls are actually really good, set out in logical places on the controller, and you can go for either simple controlls (like me) or for real realism junkies, full realism, which needs you to keep your throttle under constant controll, as wel as your flight flaps. Which leads me to another thing.. halfway through the level, i start billowing smoke and flames, and radio to Jake, one of my wingmates, for help. He tells me to check for Debris in the airtake and flush it out - I do so, and, wahey, no more flames! You can actually repair your plane midflight, to an extent. Sure, something drastic like losing a wing or a failing engine will ground you, and even if you do repair a major problem your plane will be weakened and it will take less to bring it down untill you land for real repairs - but at least you can do something about it! Besides, if its only something like one of your hydraulics going out, which can be solved by going to manual, it saves you a frikken headache later.
Still, I do have one major gripe with this game - The voice acting. Apparently, everyone who isnt American or German are total retards, and im not sure about the Germans. The british voice acting is full of Steryotypes "Tally ho! Back in time for tea and medals!" And the japanese voice acting is just.. dear lord. Your know in cartoons, that one dumb character who actually says the immortal word "Durrrr" every time hes presented with a problem? THATS the japanese voice acting in this game. Still, if you ignore that, you've got a pretty solid WW2 flight sim here. Besides, who doesnt want to have an excuse to go around in a Spitfire MkV and shoot down jerries? Tally ho!
