Well, it's been about 3 years now since I was drawn to the awesomeness that is anime and manga. It's been about 9 months since everyday has been about it (forcefully and willingly), and now I bring you my top ten(count 'em, TEN!) animes of all time. Let's get this started with #10!
#10 -- Fooly Cooly
Sonic Says: Created by two college guys with nothing to do, FLCL follows Naota Nandaba, a twelve-year-old boy living in the fictional Japanese suburb of Mabase, and his interactions with Haruko Haruhara, who arrives in the quiet suburb, drawn by the industrial town houses and the Medical Mechanica building. This anime was really overlooked by me, considering I first saw it when I didn't know much about anime to begin with. It's perky, it's dimwitted, it's downright fun! Now, I always give a ranking to something, and this list is no acception.
Rating: FLCL gets a strong 4 out of 5.
#9 -- Genshiken
Sonic Says: This anime was a late bloomer for me, considering I just found out about it maybe(at the least) 2 weeks ago. This one's all about a college club for otaku (extremely obsessed fans of various media) and the life****its members pursue. This anime really can't be described well, just because it's one that only you can see to get what's really going on. Plus the reason this anime is in my top 10 to begin with is because it's basically what my college anime club should be, but is sadly not.
Overall: Genshiken gets a over-the-top 3 out of 5.
#8 -- Strawberry Marshmallow (Ichigo Mashimaro)
Sonic Says: This anime was shown during a christmas party being held at my anime club, and i've never looked back since. All it revolves around is four elementary school girls going on adventures of imagination with one of the four's older sister. It's cuteness and family-friendly humor makes this one a sure-fire home run. If you want some girly time with laughable scenes, this one's for you.
Overall: SM gets a cutesy 4 out of 5.
#7 -- K-ON!
Sonic Says: When I first saw this anime, and for it being a huge hit in japan, this anime was a dud. Sure, the music was great, but the story was bland and it's only memorable for a short time before you go off and watch another anime. THEN I watched it a second time. I fell in love with it. K-On!'s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join their school's light music club to try to save it from being abolished. However, they are the only members of the club, and at first Yui Hirasawa, the main character, has no experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music. Eventually, she learns how to be an excellent guitar player. The rest of the club helps her to buy a guitar, and they perform successfully at the school festival. This anime not only has a good storyline and kick ass music, but it also has the mascot of music animes -- Yui Hirasawa. BTW I claim the rights to her :D.
Overall: K-ON! gets a musical 4 out of 5.
#6 -- Baka to Test to Shokanju
Sonic Says: Ok, this one gave me everything I wanted in an anime. Cute girls(;)), awesome action scenes, a very convincing trap(Wait, what?!), and laughs all around. Sadly, IDK why it only landed #6 on my countdown. Even though it may be only about a school who is able to grant its students the power to summon avatars and gain strength points by getting questions correct on tests, it's a very good show. And Funimation already licensed it when it hasn't even finished it's first season in Japan!
Overall: Everything I wanted and more. That alone gets Baka To Test to Shokanju a marvelous 5 out of 5.
#5 -- Soul Eater
Sonic Says: I'm just going to say right now that if I didn't have an anime club to go to, and no one showed this show during our halloween party, I would but out a #5 spot. Luckily, that didn't happen as Soul Eater makes it to #5 only me only 10 episodes into it. Set at the "Death Weapon Meister Academy," the series revolves around three teams consisting of a weapon meister and (at least one) human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" and thus fit for use by the academy's headmaster, Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch, in that order or they will have to restart all over again. Mysteriously, the series only revolves around the plot I just gave for about......2 episodes before going off on it's own. This series kind of reminds me of what Powerpuff Girls brought to the table of cartoons back in the early 2000's, because it has girls who kicks major ass and it has a good storyline. Also, people who complain about Maka and Blackstar's voices in the dub are major whusses.
Overall: Soul Eater gets an early 4 out of 5.
#4 -- Lucky Star
Sonic Says: This series I never gave a full chance until just recently, and boy, did I wait long enough. This series revolves around four girls going through high school with anime and manga on thier minds 24/7. While this series reminds alot of people of the sitcom Seinfeld, it reminds me of what my life would be like if I had friends like these four. BTW I also claims the rights to Kagami.
Overall: Lucky Star gets a animed 4 out of 5.
#3 -- Shin Chan (Crayon Shin Chan)
Sonic Says: Thank god Adult Swim broadcasted this when it did, otherwise I would not have found possibly the most foul-mouthed, over the top anime of 2008. When I first head about this anime, I gave it a shot considering it looked original and it was the only thing to watch at 12 midnight. Freaking. Blown. Away. Not only does this anime give you something to laugh about, it pulls out enough references and adult gags to make you want more, and more. I would definitly recommend this if you're looking for something to relate to as far as you being reminded of children in the rich side of town but acting like they live in the ghetto.
Overall: Shin Chan gets an early RIP and a 5 out of 5.
#2 -- Code Geass
Sonic Says: Oh, you best believe that when a new anime comes out on TV, I will be the first one to be up on it just to see if I should praise it or insult it. I won't have to worry about insulting this anime anytime soon. The series is set after Japan's conquest by the Holy Britannian Empire on August 10, 2010, a.t.b. with their powerful new robot weapons, the Knightmare Frames, stripping Japan and its citizens of all rights and freedoms and renaming the country Area 11. The titular Lelouch is a Britannian prince who was disowned by his father, Emperor Charles Vi Britannia, after his mother was murdered, and has vowed to kill his father, the Emperor, and destroy Britannia. He gains an ability through the mysterious power of the Geass, becoming the leader of the resistance movement to fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister Nunnally can live happily. Now, many people give this one too much praise, but I give it just the right amount. With enough plottwists and cliffhangers to keep you going through the whole series, I can very well say this was the best anime of 2009.
Overall: Code Geass gets a well deserved 5 out of 5.
And now.....Sonic's #1 anime of all time!
#1 -- Azumanga Daioh
Sonic Says: Oh hell yeah! This one is the big shabang! This one was not only the first anime to impress me right off the bat at episode 1, but it was the first anime I can say I found out by myself!Azumanga Daioh chronicles the everyday life in an unnamed Japanese high schoolof six girls and two of their teachers: child prodigy Chiyo Mihama and her struggle to fit in with girls five years older, reserved Sakaki and her obsession with the cute animals who seem to hate her, spacey Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga with a skewed perspective on the world, Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara's aggravation at an annoying best friend, Tomo Takino, whose energy is rivaled only by her lack of sense, sporty Kagura and her one-sided rivalry with Sakaki, and their homeroom teacher Yukari Tanizaki and her friend, physical education teacher Minamo Kurosawa. Secondary characters include Kimura-sensei, a creepy male teacher with an obsession with teenage girls, and Kaorin, acrazy b*tchwith a crush on Sakaki.
The story covers three years of tests, talking between ****s, culture festivals, and athletic events at school, as well as time spent traveling to and from school, studying at Chiyo's house, and vacations spent at Chiyo's summer beach home and the fictional theme park Magical Land, concluding with the graduation of the main cast. It is generally realistic in tone, marked by occasional bursts of surrealism and absurdity, such as Osaka imagining Chiyo's ponytails being "unscrewed" from her head and an episode featuring the characters' New Year's dreams.
Crazy scenes, imagination gone wild, and craziness to last me a lifetime is whatI believe is a true golden anime. How anyone can overlook this one is beyong me, but when you have a show that makes you want more right after episode 1, you have something great here. Which is why....
Overall: Azumanga Daioh gets, and always will have, a 5 out of 5.
