GameStop: 5/10/08 - Obscure Jems

As you may or may not know, I'm not much of a 'Next Generation' gamer. I do not own any next gen consoles, and favorite genres are seldomly on the shelves of North American stores. But, what spakred my attention was the onslaught of Japanese imports making its way to North America.

Since PS2 is seeing its last days in the US market, obscure companies are going to be pushing out whatever than can to sell, just as they did for PS1 (sadly most were garbage titles - Robo Pit 2, Ultimate Battle ect)

The specific titles that interest me are not only 2D, but are also nostalgic revelations -- what I mean by what is; some are based on game titles released 2-Decades ago. Thus, having any retro-gamer of the ninties jumping for joy. I'm also looking forward in playing a couple new SNK titles by the revival company SNKPlaymore.

So, I walked into a GameStop for the first time after 6 months. Low and behold, my gems were sitting their on the shelves.

Heavenly Guardian - Ever since UFO had the preview page listed on their official site (3 months ago) I stayed connected to related news under this game. It's not only a 2D platform adventure that has co-up modes, its inspired by Pocky & Rocky series. This was love at first sight. I picked up a new copy at GameStop for $19.99 and going to review it after I play it later tonight.

Arcana Heart - I know, I know. We have all seen this before. Allstar female cast in a 2-D fighting game *cough* Blood: ReACT, Eternal Fighter Zero, Akatsuki BK, Immaterial and Missing Power *cough*. BUT having seen some gameplay footage, a spark of interest went off when I heard about 'homing combos', and the large scaled arenas. I thought to myself, this could possibly rival Guilty Gear X series (which was also produced by Atlus before Sammy took over) I let this title go, for now, but have my eyes on it when the price is right for me. It was $39.99 new, at gamestop.

Baroque - *gasp* could it really be THE Baroque? In case you don't know Baroque was originally released on the Saturn years ago as a horror/crawler similar to the Kings Field for PS1. This version looks very pale, and uninspired compared to the orignal. The Saturn version had beautifully drawn artwork, and orignal gameplay. Trying not to judge a book by its cover, the updated version seems to have lost all what made Baroque stand out. Lets hope it's at least a tad bit better than Galerians:ASH.

Now for some SNK goodness

SNK Arcade ****cs Vol 1 - Some of SNK's finest games in an anthology? I must be dreaming.
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum - Tag matches, new characters, a must have.
The King of Fighter XI -
Although i'm holding out for The King of Fighters XII I still might pick this up if the price is right.

Ownership: Sega Saturn

Date Purchased:

Keeping track of all the 'Next Generation' consoles at the time subscribing to GameFan and NextGen magazines monthly. I made my decision to purchase a Sega Saturn - The time Nintendo 64 made its launch, 1995/96.

Mines came with stickers, and the Virtua Fighter II / Daytona USA / Virtua Cop bundle. On the side, I bought NiGHTS: Into Dream, Die Hard Arcade, and Robo Pit. I've rented all the available North American Saturn titles at Blockbuster the later two years.

From then on, I joined SaturnTorrents (pioneer of bringing Sega Saturn torrents online) I've burned/played many titles. In 2003 I bought a handful of Japanese games including official 4MBRAM Carts. Took a hiatus, now i'm back into playing Sega Saturn.

During 1995-97 I rented games, and sold many during that time period. During 2000-01 I downloaded and played 80% of JPN/PAL/US Games. as of now I own

Futures/Today:

NiGHTS NTSC + 3D Controller

Emotionally Frustrated

MUSIC: Weezer. Pork and Beans.

LIFE:
Has been idle for a good time, but had a rush of business from an employer down at this Art Gallery. I'm currently working 5 days a week.. hardly any time for myself.

GAMES: I've been playing (a week ago) crappy North American / European Sega Saturn games in which I use to wonder how they were, but never gave the time to actually play them. Also hooked on Saturn Bomberman at the moment, which is pure bliss.

RELATIONSHIPS: I've been pretty depressed latley, kinda going though a 'downward spiral', but I wish to clear it up soon. At the time no relationships.

CLOSING THOUGHTS: Damn you Bakahashi for inspiring me to do a blog like yours!

Sleep rescue me Take me back to my home
"

Current Game Room

As you may know or not know, I moved my game room around a bit. Its now located in the front room of the house - that is the consoles in which I still use. I also made good use of these small drawers that were nearby. Although my NES, Playstation one games, Dreamcast originals, miniature figurines, video game magazine collection are still in the back room tucked away from dust. 4/15/08

Thats right, no next generation consoles as of now. I do still use my Playstation 2 which is on the far left near my PC. But I did not take a photo of it. I plan on buying a Playstation 3 in the future. So far not one 'Next Gen' console impresses me.

The Encyclopedia of Game Machines

Picked up Winnie Foster's The Encyclopedia of Game Machines on amazon last weekend. usually skeptical on video game books, but since this was recommended by the folks over at Insert Credit, and had raving reviews I decided to pick it up.

The Encyclopedia of Game Machines

The overall book is very well put together. Basically goes over 450 home consoles, (rounded to 420 full console reviews -- since the more obsurce 30 are semi explained in the back with no photos) with full photos, descriptions, last game published until, complete models, and how well they sold amongst the competition at the time.

The book is split up into 4 segments. First, explains the different storage of each console (floppy disk, Hudson's Hu Card, GDROM ect) briefly. Second goes over first computer/arcade built. Then branches off into 4 eras.. Beginning (Atari, C64, MSX ect) until the crash, return of 8-bit (Nintendo, PCE, SMS ect), 32/64-bit + handheld - (Saturn, Nuon, 3DO ect) until Today: which is Xbox and Nintendo DS since it was published in 2003.

But I would fully recommend picking up a copy ;)
