By its very nature, games have a repetitive feel to them. How many Koopas have you stomped in SMB, or aliens shot down in Gradius, or zombies destroyed in Ghosts' 'N Goblins? But I'm finding that most games (more now than ever IMO) are mere clones of previous games with a new shinny coat of paint and another move.
Being a clone game isn't necessarily bad, look at Zelda every game (except the CD-i monstrosities) are more or less the same game, but the developers did a masterful job at changing it up. But now, most mediocre games are clones of something else. I can respect a game like Chromehounds that tries to be something different and misses the mark. But games like Prey, Crysis, F.E.A.R. (notice these are FPS) just seem like inferior, although new, copies of other games, like DOOM or Half-Life.
There's no game genre that is more guilty of this than the sports genre. I enjoy NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, SSX Tricky (the originals mind you) far far more than the same old Madden no matter what year, anyday, because they have a new take on the sport. Mario sports games are a perfect example. Mario Strikers is infinitely more appealing to me than Perfect Eleven or whatever that soccer game is, because even though I don't like soccer, Strikers has a great new spin on things.
Its aspects like this that have me so excited for the Wii, and so blase about the PS3. Its also the reason why I have a DS and not a PSP. DS and GBA games may be ports or older games resurrected, but something about the New Super Mario Bros. is far more appealing to me than playing the latest port of Burnout or whatever the PSP has. Plus there are much better games for the DS, regardless of how much more eyecandy there is on the PSP. I have to say I'm neutral about the 360.
Give me new, interesting games and gameplay experiences!!! And for the games that worked well, maybe another clone, but too many and the game DNA will mutate and go bad...
