Jumping on the Blue (Box) Bandwagon

I've seen more and more of this lately and I wanna try it too! :D I prolly won't have time to check my progress during the week so this'll be a weekend thing then.

I added the last bit about editorships. Hopefully they won't kick me out of the cult. ;)

Needed Contributions, Part 2: Miss Match

I've finished going over the Miss Match guide, adding every piece of information I can find. If you'd like to help, there's still some things that are missing: 1) Episode 12: All in the Family I'm a bit puzzled by this episode. Has it ever aired anywhere in the world? If it has, no one has bothered to write a recap. If you have seen this episode, please please PLEASE write a recap! I'm dying to know what happened. :D 2) Recaps for the following episodes: - Episode 1: no recap at all - Episodes 2-11: very short recaps, more like extended summaries - Episode 12: no recap (see explanation above) - Episode 14: short recap If you don't have access to the episodes but would like to help, you can go to Television Without Pity. They have very long (several pages!) recaps of the 11 episodes that aired in the U.S., spiced with the writers own comments. They can be used to recreate the episodes if you don't remember exactly what happened. But don't plagiarize! 3) Production codes Production codes are needed for episodes 5-9, 12 and 14. They are printed at the very end of the closing credits, just about the last frame before production company logos. And could someone also double-check the production #'s for episodes 1 and 2 because they do not seem to be following the same pattern as the rest of the episodes. 4) Banner If a staff member is reading this, the show could also use a banner. :) PrimetimeTV.About.com has great publicity photos. The photos are very large, so large in fact that loading the page almost froze my computer.

It's Time to Snuggle Up!

...in front of the TV and pop in the Dr. Snuggles DVD. (Ha ha, how very clever of me. :P ) I became the editor for Dr. Snuggles, an animated series from the late 70's/early 80's about a jolly old inventor who lives in a forest with his animal friends and... well, invents stuff. :) I remember watching this on Sunday mornings as a kid. My friend bought the Dr. Snuggles Collector's Special Edition DVD box set from Play.com and he was kind enough to let me borrow it for a while. Here's a pic:
Dr. Snuggles DVD box set
A few years back I also had the Dr. Snuggles theme song as a ringtone in my cellphone. Safe to say, it got a few quizzing looks. :) Then I switched phones and my new one wasn't compatible with the ringtone. I still miss that tune. The guide was almost completely empty when I started. Only one single episode was entered and that only because it was written by the late Douglas Adams. Yes, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fellow. So this will be a lengthy project. I'll be watching the DVDs and then writing summaries and recaps of the episodes. I've also decided to list every new character that is introduced in a particular episode. The reason for this is that there are only 3 voice actors and they all provide voices for several characters. Neither of them are credited by which character they play, only just as "Voices".

"He's Gone into Rejection-Slip Shock!"

I just had to share this. :D I just read Friday's Peanuts cartoon online. You can read it daily at www.snoopy.com (here's a direct link to today's strip). Snoopy has just submitted his manuscript for a novel and has now received a letter from the publishing company. It reads: "Dear Contributor, we regret to inform you that your manuscript does not suit our present needs." How many of us here at TV.com feel the same? At least I'm "seeing red" when they hand me their little rejection slip PMs. ;) Anyway, happy weekend everyone! And happy contributing, may our submission histories be rejection-slip free. :)

Yay, New Guide!

Saturday morning I finally had enough points to become the editor for Miss Match. :) This charming light drama, starring Alicia Silverstone as a divorce-attorney-slash-matchmaker, aired in fall 2003. Then NBC abruptly cancelled it, leaving 7 episodes unaired. I started straightening up the episode guide but so far managed to tackle only the first four episodes. When I'm done, I'll post an update of what's still missing in the guide. EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to add this. It's great to see that yummy David Conrad will be starring on CBS's Ghost Whisperer this fall. :D Althought I think the show will flop... What a bummer. :) I also requested an old show to be added to TV.com, but it hasn't shown up yet. Maelstrom is a BBC cult classic from 1985. Where I live, they're airing reruns of this horror/thriller/mystery mini series in September. I thought that would be a good opportunity to have it included here and also to submit information to it. And of course I'd like to be the editor for it. ;)

Needed Contributions, Part 1: Neon Genesis Evangelion

I have been putting off writing these for too long now. I was going to start with Middlemarch but since StarlightMaker has been making some good contributions to the NGE guide lately, I think that's needed first. First let me start off by saying that I didn't exactly desire to be the editor for Neon Genesis Evangelion. I think at TVTome the NGE guide was created single-handedly by some person who has not transferred their account to TV.com. When TV.com launched, I was cleaning up the guide and quite accidentally got enough submissions accepted to be named the editor. I am certainly no expert in all things NGE, so I'm willing to let go of the position if and when I find a suitable replacement. ;) I'd also like to point out that I've seen (and heard) the original Japanese version, with subtitles. This might be different from the "americanized" version. So what's needed in the guide? 1) Recaps In some episodes there are no recaps at all and in some they are really short or otherwise not that well written. Recaps should contain all the major scenes and plot developments. What's specific about NGE is that if you haven't seen all the episodes, some scenes in earlier episodes might seem insignificant. These can be pointed out in recaps but don't spoil any future events that will be revealed in later episodes. 2) Quotes There are over 20 episodes and practically no quotes at all. Surely there must be some memorable moments in NGE! 3) Guest stars StarlightMaker has been making good progress with these but more are still needed. :) And then some things I can't or don't want to fix right now: 1) Show stars Hoo boy. The cast list is a big mess. I'm hoping the staff will come up with a character renaming tool very soon! I'd also like some tips or recommendations on how to enter cast lists for different language versions. Ideally, there would be tabs or little flag icons for different language versions within the guide but I'm not holding my breath for any such feature any time soon. 2) Air dates If I understand correctly, the listed air dates are the original broadcast dates in Japan. This is the former editor's decision and I'm respecting it. Since the show was created in 1995, I think the 1995 air dates can stay. Listing newer air dates would be misleading. But I think the previous U.S. air dates could be included in the Notes section, as well as the new Fall 2005 Adult Swim air dates. From the website: Neon Genesis Evangelion will begin airing Thursdays, starting Thursday, October 20, at 12:30 a.m. 3) The movies The movies should be in Other Episodes but because of yet another TV.com bug, you can't see them. But don't worry, they are in the database! :) You can reach them by using the previous/next episode links or the top episodes list but here are the links: * Death & Rebirth * The End of Evangelion Currently the episode numbers for the movies are also wrong. I had to edit the episodes summaries/recaps but then I got the error about conflicting episode number and I had to put something in. I tried to use the episode renumbering tool a few weeks back but no one has moderated it yet. *sigh*

Submission Guidelines (or Links to Some)

I don't consider myself to be a big blog person. However, this seems to be a popular activity among users so I might as well give it a go. :) Many editors have already posted submission guidelines for their shows. I don't have any particular quirks -- not related to editoring anyway :D -- so there's no need for me to re-invent the wheel. I'll just post links instead! :) These are handy references for everyone, including myself, so I better write them down before they're lost among the wealth of information on this site. Gislef, stogster and Kristhetvgirl2 have written excellent guides and here's Yakira's post on the West Wing forum. (It's West Wing specific but can be applied to any show.) All of these are worthy of reading carefully through and through. They also give explanations to the different elements of a show/episode guide (notes, allusions, etc.) These lists are really quite exhaustive and I don't have much to add. A couple of notes, though: 1) The number 1 rule: DON'T STEAL! Don't plagiarize someone else's work; write in your own words. It's not that difficult, really. It'll be good to air the little gray cells every once in a while. ;) You're not allowed to copy information from another site, not even if you indicate the source because TV.com has not been granted the permission to duplicate that information. It might have been a common practice on TVTome, but TV.com/CNET is a business venture and thus falls under a different interpretation of the copyright law. Worst case scenario: someone will sue and TV.com is forced to shut down. None of us wants that, right? See also Gislef's blog post on stealing. 2) Links are always welcome, especially in allusions and notes. Use them in moderation, though, not every word has to be a link. Good sites to link to are Wikipedia articles, IMDB, and different official sites. I've actually had a staff member moderate a submission and it came back with a note: "next time don't use URLs". I'm quite frankly ignoring this suggestion because there was no additional explanation why links should not be used. Not every link is a good one, though. I've seen one episode summary that included a link to some golf equipment advertisement, and that to me seems quite dubious. EDIT: The advertising links were actually caused by spyware/adware on one of the editors' computer. They weren't intentional and advertising is forbidden in the Terms of Service. 3) I don't mean to be harsh or offend anyone with this one so bear with me: don't ask to be a trusted contributor. There are actually a couple of reasons for this. One, I don't know you -- yet. If I see you continuously making good, original submissions with timely, accurate, and useful information, I'll ask you. Two, and this is a system design flaw, trusted contributors don't have much powers yet. I'm hoping the system will be changed so that TCs would have access to the mod queue as well. Only then will they actually be useful rather than just being a title position. 4) And finally, some words on submitting quotes. Again, both Gislef and stogster have posted excellent guides about this. I just want to add that I don't want to punish you and reject your quote submissions if you don't get the formatting 100% correct. The primary reason for this is that the preview page is abysmally, horribly bad. (Come on, how long does it take to fix that??) That is not to say that you should ignore the instructions, however. But if you make a couple of errors, I don't mind. I'll just edit them for you. There's also been some debate and differing opinions on where the colon should be. I prefer it *not* to be inside the bold tags. This is the suggested way on TV.com and quite frankly I think it looks better. :) In my opinion there's no need to bold the colon, what's more important is the character name. And enough with the anatomy jokes already. ;) That's all from me now. :) When I next have time, I plan to write a series of posts on what kinds of submissions/contributions are needed on my guides to make them more complete and accurate.
