I don't consider myself to be a big blog person. However, this seems to be a popular activity among users so I might as well give it a go. :) Many editors have already posted submission guidelines for their shows. I don't have any particular quirks -- not related to editoring anyway :D -- so there's no need for me to re-invent the wheel. I'll just post links instead! :) These are handy references for everyone, including myself, so I better write them down before they're lost among the wealth of information on this site.
Gislef,
stogster and
Kristhetvgirl2 have written excellent guides and here's
Yakira's post on the
West Wing forum. (It's
West Wing specific but can be applied to any show.) All of these are worthy of reading carefully through and through. They also give explanations to the different elements of a show/episode guide (notes, allusions, etc.) These lists are really quite exhaustive and I don't have much to add. A couple of notes, though:
1) The number 1 rule:
DON'T STEAL! Don't plagiarize someone else's work;
write in your own words. It's not that difficult, really. It'll be good to air the little gray cells every once in a while. ;) You're not allowed to copy information from another site, not even if you indicate the source because TV.com has not been granted the permission to duplicate that information. It might have been a common practice on TVTome, but TV.com/CNET is a business venture and thus falls under a different interpretation of the copyright law. Worst case scenario: someone will sue and TV.com is forced to shut down. None of us wants that, right? See also
Gislef's blog post on stealing.
2) Links are always welcome, especially in allusions and notes. Use them in moderation, though, not every word has to be a link. Good sites to link to are
Wikipedia articles,
IMDB, and different official sites. I've actually had a staff member moderate a submission and it came back with a note: "next time don't use URLs". I'm quite frankly ignoring this suggestion because there was no additional explanation why links should not be used. Not every link is a good one, though. I've seen one episode summary that included a link to some golf equipment advertisement, and that to me seems quite dubious. EDIT: The advertising links were actually caused by spyware/adware on one of the editors' computer. They weren't intentional and advertising is forbidden in the
Terms of Service.
3) I don't mean to be harsh or offend anyone with this one so bear with me: don't
ask to be a trusted contributor. There are actually a couple of reasons for this. One, I don't know you -- yet. If I see you continuously making good, original submissions with timely, accurate, and useful information,
I'll ask you. Two, and this is a system design flaw, trusted contributors don't have much powers yet. I'm hoping the system will be changed so that TCs would have access to the mod queue as well. Only then will they actually be useful rather than just being a title position.
4) And finally, some words on submitting quotes. Again, both
Gislef and
stogster have posted excellent guides about this. I just want to add that I don't want to punish you and reject your quote submissions if you don't get the formatting 100% correct. The primary reason for this is that the preview page is abysmally, horribly bad. (Come on, how long does it take to fix that??) That is not to say that you should ignore the instructions, however. But if you make a couple of errors, I don't mind. I'll just edit them for you. There's also been some debate and differing opinions on where the colon should be. I prefer it
*not* to be inside the bold tags. This is the suggested way on TV.com and quite frankly I think it looks better. :) In my opinion there's no need to bold the colon, what's more important is the character name. And enough with the anatomy jokes already. ;) That's all from me now. :) When I next have time, I plan to write a series of posts on what kinds of submissions/contributions are needed on my guides to make them more complete and accurate.
