Boring games with lavish production value aren't going to cut it anymore. Generic shooters aren't going to cut it anymore. Things are looking up in gaming folks. We're finally holding developers to a higher standard. Here's hoping that focus shifts back to making fun games!
Why do cable companies charge subscription fees? Why do cell phone companies charge subscription fees? What about Netflix? Xbox Live & Playstation Network?
The truth is that companies don't provide services for nothing. If there's no MMO subscription fee then the means for getting the revenue will be more intrusive and annoying. Without fees these games would all have a roaming band of players flocking to the latest flavor-of-the-month free MMO. With entry and exit being so easy many people wouldn't bother to build relationships with other players and strong communities would be difficult to form.
My guess is that people who complain about MMO subscription fees don't have the time or level of commitment required to really enjoy an MMO properly anyway. If you stick to one MMO and have the time to play it the value proposition is very high. That $12-$15 per month gets you a lot of quality entertainment. I don't make much money and I have to be very frugal but I invest in FFXIV because it's worth it to me. It's a no-brainer.
Please don't ruin MMOs by forcing them to be free-to-play.
In my opinion people who claim Nintendo's games are too childish need to lighten up, relax, be cool and enjoy a little cheerfulness. Laugh a little and smile. It's good for you.
