I wish running an automobile was this cheap. The cost of running an automobile 10, 15 or 20 hours per week for a year: $2,028, $3,042 & $4,056 (25 MPG, 30 MPH/h average, $3.50/g gas)
Indie games have sprung up because the big budget productions just aren't providing fresh quality experiences anymore. In the 80's and 90's there were so many developers making all kinds of creative PC & console games. I probably played over 20 types of games growing up and now all of that diversity is gone. So indie games are now picking up where gaming left off at the end of the 90's and we're once again seeing interesting new gameplay experiences. I don't think indie development is going anywhere. It's a movement that's going to rock the entire industry and bring passionate smaller-scale game development back.
I doubt Nintendo is being greedy, they have said that the 3DS is expensive because the technology is ambitious. The public hasn't even seen the 3D in action yet. If it's awesome enough to move tens of millions of units at 250-300 dollars each and sell out repeatedly in stores, then it's not overpriced. If the 3D turns out to be a cheesy gimmick with a hefty price tag slapped on, the free market will provide just punishment with low sales and Nintendo's image will be tarnished. Ask yourself, which scenario do you think is more likely?
Uuuuuhhh, like, this stuff is complicated. Just give me a beer and a cigarette and I'll be off killing people in Halo 3 all day. People make life too complicated dude. For real.
