A redesign is pretty much the only thing that can save the 3DS at this point-- but even if it is saved, I don't think the market is going to be there. Nintendo still isn't going to get the casuals back, and the core gamers are still fed up with them. I think it will have decent sales with kids, and Nintendo's remaining fans will buy just about anything they make, but that basically puts the 3DS in the same spot as the Gamecube, which would be pretty bad for a Nintendo handheld.

For me it's the NES because of the early childhood memories and the awesome sound chip. I will always love the sounds of the NES which are so unique to anything else out there which is why I'm glad people are making chiptune music. The console itself didn't have the best games (that would come in the 16-bit era imo) but man, opening up that birthday present and seeing the NES inside... good times.
