@TomFoolerE @ArabrockermanX @queuing_for_PS4 In my opinion, Kameo was the best launch title of the last gen. Not nearly as successful as Wii Sports, but a game for the core gamer that I really enjoyed. Looking back, it's been: Mario 64, Rogue Leader, and Kameo as system sellers for me. Nothing in the launch lineup for the wii or wii-u grabbed my attention, athough the Wii did have some amazing games that came later.
We need Microsoft to let us in on Rare's Nextbox launch titles. ;-;
I wanted a 2d mario to ship with the system so it could sell, but give Nintendo time to figure out the hardware and make the next 3D mario something good enough to make Galaxies forgettable.
I also wanted Pikmin 3. More than any other nintendo franchise, this one is well suited to the controller.
And while 3rd party support is where everyone's knocking the system, Rayman Origins is still my go-to multiplayer platformer for PC, and the Legends demo has me more excited for a platformer than I've been since Kameo or Mario 64.
Right now at least, the launch looks nearly perfect for me. As much as I'd love a new Rogue Squadron/Jedi Knight game, Retro Studios' new project, or a more inventive use the touchscreen for first person shooters ( http://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii2/how_the_wiiu_could_revolutionize_fps ); those are all things that stand a chance of coming later better than they would end up at launch.
It looks like friend codes are dead. I skipped out on Wii because I wasn't terribly excited about motion controls, but the hardware looks very promising; and I'm not a huge graphics buff....
I've been disappointed with the 360, so if Nintendo can't win me back over I'll just stick to PC gaming for the next gen.
As a 360 owner seriously considering jumping ship to the WiiU and relying on a PC for my next-gen gaming needs, several things would need to happen to get me to stay. I'll start with the ones most likely to happen:
1) Rare. The company became a legend for figuring out how to develop SNES games before that system was released, and they handled the 360 launch as perfectly as possible, IMO. Kameo sold me on the 360, Perfect Dark Zero is perhaps still the best 4-player local coop shooter on the system, and both dared to be different (the hybrid fighter-creature collection - platformer and the new skeleton modes that made zombie style games work well for shooters). Having finished their forced projects handling Kinnect Sports for Microsoft, they're definitely working on 720 games as we speak. And if Kameo is any indication, they've been working on 720 launch titles for years. As a platforming fan, I'd love to see a real Banjo/Kameo/Conker or something new entirely in addition to their more action-oriented franchises.
2) Release the Xbox Live Arcade service for PC. Get me interested in the indie scene from my computer/wired 360 controller hybrid and I might just be interested in what the next version can do.
3) A partner with gamespy/steam/onlive/xpadder for pc-360 connectivity. Let me stream my PC games to the console and play on my TV with a 360 controller- a lot of titles, from Rogue Squadron 3D to Rayman Origins for the PC work great with a wired controller. The PC has a virtually unlimited backlog of games compared to consoles, and that should be tapped if Microsoft wants to compete with the richer gaming histories of there console competitors. Allow for a mouse and keyboard option and provide a free windows OS (perhaps XP). Partner with FTP Pc games to make versions available on the system at launch to showcase free online support (perhaps DDO).
4) Full backwards compatibility. Finish the xbox compatibility list, and let 360 games work on 720. The wii is 10 times more attractive for it's excellent gamecube library (rogue leader/Pac Man vs./Baten Kaitos/and the Nintendo bit - smash/mario/metroid/zelda/pikmin/etc).
5) Plug and play USB support for custom controllers. Bring out your PC joystick, map the controls to the 360's sticks and buttons and play H.A.W.X. or an Air Combat game. Bring out your mouse and keyboard and play an MMO or RTS in a way that works.
Those are what would get me excited about the system. I miss the strength of Nintendo's franchises and their willingness to do something different with them and pursue new IP like they did on the 'cube (mario sunshine, windwaker and pikmin come to mind). With Rare and some good PC connections, I might decide to stick with Microsoft for another round. Without them, I'll likely bounce back to Nintendo.
@CalamityKate That's true - I'd be paying for a service charge to Apple for changing the battery and get to keep a warranty to boot. And I could pay a service charge to Capcom for them to unlock on-disk content for me. Or I could unlock it myself for free, and as I don't have a warranty with most games I wouldn't be voiding it.
You can't sell me a watch and then charge me $15 to remove the battery myself.
I own my game disc, including all the content on it. And if I unlock said content myself rather than pay to "download" nothing, I haven't done anything illegal under fair use.
So Capcom, I'm fine with you working on DLC before launch, but if you intend to charge for DLC, don't include it on the disk. You can't charge me for what I've already purchased and already own.
I have to say, even though the good use of the bottom screen has been limited, it would be impossible to have 3d AND touch tech. And for the few games where 3D actually effects gameplay (PUSHMO / Mario 3D Land), the innovation is worth the loss of graphical quality to me; which is why I bought the system. The Vita's great, but I feel that I could get the same experience playing on PC or a 360 while the 3DS offers something radically different. Now if we can just get developers to spend time/effort to come up with software to match... (Elite Beat Agents / Maestro! Jump in Music were both concepts that just wouldn't work on the more traditional platforms).
I think for Smash bros it would be nice to have a permanently close camera angle on the tablet, for those times in large levels where it can get difficult to see the characters in a 4 player match. Maybe even allow us to have a zoom in/out function at an angle centered on our player with the dual pad?
