205 Shows no shows

With yesterday's delayed increase, I woke up to find I had become a Baywatcher. (The first, I think.) Level increases have been more robust and reliable of late, and it took me 30 days, and 1595 submissions, to progress through 76.

No news of great interest to report. In recent days, I regained the editorship of Murphy's Law, and finally acquired the guide to The Uninvited, having done most of the work on this last year. Rejections are always noteworthy, and I scored a couple (my first since March) when tidying the dates and running order for a long-running detective drama. I was reviewing my rejection history, and while most relate to submissions asking for duplicate guides to be deleted (I thought it was a good idea at the time!) I realise that I now edit almost every show guide for which I have ever received a rejection...

I have reported elsewhere on my difficulty in editing the cast at summary level for The Bill. The cast list comprises146 Stars and 78 Recurring Characters, and is now augmentes by a total of7616 Guest Star entries, corresponding to every entry held at TVTome in May 2005, less those who have been recategorised as recurring by this site. The huge number of entries means that the page takes forever to open and edit, but this is something that needs to be done as and when new cast members join the show, or when a duplicate person guide is identified. When accessing the page lately, I have added, edited or deleted 7 entries, the maximum allowed when using I.E.7.0, and this takes me between 35 and 45 minutes to complete. I have made several attempts to access the page with Firefox, but it fails to complete loading despite my leaving it unattended for hours at a time. I cannot understand why a developer thought we would need the guest stars listed here, on a page that may only be accessed by show editors, still less why the list is based on 2-year-old data. (By default, the guest stars list for any guide will include credits that have been deleted from or edited in the main guide, multiple entries for actors who appeared under different charactrer names, and some duplicate guides that have been flagged for deletion.) If and when I do get access, I may need to consider weeding the guest list as a priority, to ease future submissions.

As implied above, I have reluctantly started using Firefox, but only where I want to edit more than seven entries for a particular episode. I've developed a script that allows me to make bulk edits to character names for individual episodes of The Bill, but the coding used by the site means that each actor-entry has to be edited offline for every submission, and the process is still time-consuming. There is a saving of time and effort, but this relates almost entirely to circumventing the less than user-friendly interface that requires so much movement between individual entries and the edit box. If only the submission form had been designed by the person who worked on the episode renumbering tool, which is simple and easy to use and requires no back-and-forth navigation.

There sees to be some confusion over best practice, with the new Cast/Crew submission form, so I thought I would share my experience and consolidate the advice I have been giving in the forums.

If adding show stars, first select Import then click on the Import All Stars button. As currently configured, the form will retrieve all stars listed at summary level, but without character names. Tab through the form, and when you find a star you want to add, overwrite Self with the desired character name. (This should be the name as credited on screen, and without any year/season tags.) If you need to reclassify the actor as Recurring Role or Guest Star, do so at this stage using the drop down menu. Add the actor to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

You may want to add from the current list of recurring actors. Select Import then click on Import Recurring Stars. The form will retrieve all recurring actors listed at summary level, but without character names. Tab through the form, and when you find a star you want to add, overwrite Self with the desired character name. If you need to reclassify the actor as Star or Guest Star, do so at this stage using the drop down menu. Add the actor to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If adding guests, use the Add hyperlink at the top of the form. Enter the actor's name in the search field, and hit the search button. Note that if the search takes along time, it is probably because there are no matches in the database for one of the actor's names you have input, and the system will be searching for everybody in the database with the other name (e.g. if you search for John Mxyzptlk, the system will be preparing to return a list of every John in the database). If your person has one unusual name, it may be best to restrict your search to that name, although be warned that this approach may mean you fail to find misspellings or alternative spellings.

When the system returns the name of your person, overwrite Self with the desired character name. If you need to reclassify the actor as Star or Guest Star, do so at this stage using the drop down menu. Add the actor to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If the system returns several names that might relate to your actor, e.g. John Doe, John Doe (II) and John Doe (III), you could try clicking on the view details hyperlink next to each result. If you're lucky, one or other might have a bio. Alternatively, try searching the TV.com database for these names in another window, where you will be able to check which one relates. If the system returns two or more identical names, try using the view details hyperlink next to each result. If that doesn't help, try adding one or other by selecting the Add! button.

When you add an actor from the database, the details appear at the foot of the form, and the actor's name is hyperlinked. If there is any doubt as to whether this ID relates, click on the hyperlink to open the actor's profile page. If it does not relate, you can delete the entry by ticking the box and selecting the Delete hyperlink at the top of the page. If another of the search results might relate, try adding that name and repeat the process.

If searching for an actor does not return the name you are looking for, you can try adding a name to the database by selecting the Add A Brand New Person! hyperlink at the end of your search results. Use this feature wisely, and do not use it at all if you know that the person you are looking for is held in the database, but has not been found by the search engine. Enter the first name, surname and any middle names in the relevant field, and enter the character name in the Character name field. If the character name is unknown, delete Self. The form will accept blank entries. Select the appropriate role type (Star, Recurring Role or Guest Star). Add the actor to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If you add a brand new person, their profile will be corrupted. The credited name field of the first brand new person will drop the forename. The credited name field of second or subsequent brand new persons will replace the forename with a name from another brand new person. After your submission is approved, you will have to submit an edit to the person profile, explaining that you are correcting a system bug.

If you want to delete an actor that is already attached to an episode, tick the box next to the actor's name, select Delete at the top of the form, then click the Remove button.

If you want to downgradethe role typefor an actor whois already attached to an episode (amendingfrom star to recurringorguest; amending from recurring to guest) tick the box next to the actor's name, select Editat the top of the form, select the correct role type from the drop down, then click the Save button.

If you want to make any other edits to an actor whois already attached to an episode (correcting character name, or upgrading role type fromguest or tostar) you currently have to delete him and add him back again with the correct details. This can all be done on the same form. Tick the box next to the actor's name, select Delete at the top of the form, then click the Remove button. Add the actor back using the protocols described above.

Exercise caution before using other actor role types: Cameo and Special Guest Star credits are currently treated as crew credits, do not appear on the episode summary form, and are classed under Other on the actor's profile.

If you want to add crew to an episode, select the Add Cast form. (It's the same form, but doesn't seem to work if you try to Add Crew.) Select the Import button then Import Crew. The form will retrieve all producers and crew listed at summary level, with job titles. Tab through the form, and when you find a star you want to add, delete Self from the Character Name field. If you need to change the job title, do so at this stage using the drop down menu. Add the artisan to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If adding a person who has more than one job title at summary level, using the Import Crew function will only add one of his job titles, no matter which job title you select. To add a second job title, you will need to add that person as you would a guest, usingthe add functioninstead of theimport function.Use the Add hyperlink at the top of the form. Enter the artisan's name in the search field, and hit the search button. When the system returns the name of your person, delete Self from the Character Name field, and use the drop down menu to select the appropriate job title. Add the artisan to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If the crew member you want to add is not listed, you can add that person as you would a guest: use the Add hyperlink at the top of the form, enter the crew member's name in the search field, and hit the search button. When the system returns the name of your person, delete Self from the Character Name field, and use the drop down menu to select the appropriate job title. Add the artisan to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If searching for a crew member does not return the name you are looking for, you can try adding a name to the database by selecting the Add A Brand New Person! hyperlink at the end of your search results. Enter the first name, surname and any middle names in the relevant field, and delete Self from the Character name field. Select the appropriate role type using the drop down menu. Add the artisan to the submission form by selecting the Add! button.

If you need to correct an existing crew credit, you will need to access the page through the Add Crew path. Notethat users are reporting difficulties with this function: edits and deletions of credits that have just been added incorrectly work fine; edits and deletions of long-standing credits do not seem to take.

Having added or edited all the actors or crew members you need to, take the time to review your entries. If you need to amend a character name or role type, tick the box next to the name and select Edit at the top of the page. If you decide to drop an incorrect or suspect entry, tick the box next to the name and select Delete at the top of the page.

Note that we can currently make no more than seven additions, edits or deletions on each submission. If you try to edit an eighth entry, the system is liable to ignore the edit and add a new entry for that person.

I hope this is of some use, reflecting as it does the state of play today. It may all change tomorrow!

After a false dawn yesterday, when I hit 75(99%), I am finally on level 76. It took more than twice as long, and twice as many submissions, to progress through 75 as it did through 74. Not that I am submitting much since 7/1. The Super Bass-o-matic is yet another Saturday Night Live reference, this time to a sketch that parodied those dreadful infommercials. The "Super Bass-o-matic" allows you to prepare a bass without troublesome scaling, cutting and gutting. Just drop the whole bass into the blenderand it's ready to drink, with no waste...

This is the point where I'm supposed to rant about the submission problems, but we all know how bad those are. In his blog, danmod tells us that there is good news and bad news. Put simply, the good news appears to be that they have wound some of the forms and processes (lost comments box and preview page, comments removed from submissions history, superfluous acceptance PMs, lost submission type at approvals, changed CPs for people submissions) that simply annoyed back to where they were in June, and the bad news is that they haven't managed to fix those things that made contributing impossible. Apart from the new cast/crew form (can't edit or delete recurring actors, guests or crew, have to manually add character names to retrieved stars, searching takes longer, no pop-up window/hyperlinks for search results, have to force manual addition box, corruption of Credited Name field for manually added people, inability to attach credits to existing non-searchable IDs, crew can only be added through add cast path), an xHTML policing wizard blocks creation of summaries, we can't create new seasons, the theme field has been removed from the show summary form, summary edits now generate an end date of 1/1/08, alias field removed from the bio submission form, bio edits generating bogus 1/1/08 dates of birth or death, we can no longer move items between categories, half of all submissions have no effect, and submissions keep getting stuck in our queues.

So, a wise contributor will refrain from adding episodes, editing cast, adding people, editing show summaries and editing bios. How was it that, when so many aspects of the submission process neither needed changed, nor received a visible change, so much went so badly wrong? And while I am sure that the development staff have been very busy, why has there been so little visible progress in resolving these faults?

The forums are now full of disparate threads from people coming up against the same problems, but submitting away regardless. We really could use a block on certain submission types, or at least some updated guidance on the forms, how to use them, and current issues: people are not going to trawl through all the existing threads before repeating these mistakes. I am truly upset at the amount of carnage being wrought: sorting out the duplicate people IDs will be a nightmare...

I've seen some hysterical reactions, notably on danmod's blog, and repeated reassurances that the development team is working on something, and having minor successes, and that the system will be working as soon as possible. Submissions are the lifeblood of this site, and it is unacceptable that these should, in effect, be suspended indefinitely. I wonder whether consideration has been giving to rolling back some or all of the troublesome new features until such time as the worst of the bugs is tackled. If not, why not? When TV.com v2.0 was introduced, it initially ran alongside v1.0. Shouldn't new features be released after rigorous testing in a real, but non-critical, environment, as a matter of routine?

We are given to understand that CPs, level points, TUs and editorships are all unfailingly recorded correctly at the "back end". Addressing the issue that prevents such information appearing at the front end, and has kept users at suppressed levels for weeks, might be a good place for the development team to start work. Meanwhile, we could all get back to submitting using the systems in place until the end of June, confident that a new submission system would be reintroduced once properly tested and found to be bug free. That might also provide enough time to recruit someone to redesign the cast/crew submission form.

Edit: And what about the bug that causes spaces between words to drop between submission and publication?

I've been holding back from this blog, which was originally scheduled to commemorate my reaching Level 76 and acquiring the editorship of Softly Softly, the classic police procedural I needed to complete my collection. I was then going to follow up with a critique of the new submission system. As everyone is now aware, the new system has not been without teething problems. One can hardly be surprised at the lack of a level update: my Stats box hasn't even been updated (for the second time in a week).

The system came on line at 1800 PST on 1 July 2007, ahead of schedule. Staff had cleared all outstanding submissions, and updated all CPs.

Editors got a new form for the bulk renumbering of episodes, a very useful tool that largely does what it says on the tin, although we cannot access season 0 episodes, nor reassign episodes to season 0.

The main redesign element relates to the form used for cast and crew submissions. We can now edit show stars at episode level, a handy function if you are dealing with shows where an actor's character name changes during a show's run, and an opportunity for us to excise all those ridiculous season/year tags attached to character names at episode level after the data migration of 2005. Show stars not already attached to an episode do not appear, although we can get the system to populate the form with the names of all stars and system-defined recurring actors, to ease on searching. Unfortunately, the retrieved names do not have character names attached, so these have to be added manually. The form allows the editing of existing star credits, the recategorisation of co-star credits, and the addition of new credits, but not the editing or deletion of co-stars, guests, creators or crew. Regardless of the number of entries made on a submission form, the system will accept no more than 8 new entries or 7 edits and deletions. Since the first night, the system has been reluctant to accept either additions or deletions. That much is bugginess. The design fault, and it's a doozy, is that we have lost the hyperlinks attached to existing stars, we have lost the actor profile preview pop-up, and we cannot identify the ID numbers of search results from page source. Instead, all names have frames for pictures attached. Staff have added pictures to only a tiny fraction of people IDs, so this feature serves no useful purpose. When the search results are returned, we have to carry out a separate search to confirm which, if any, relates to our person. This does not help differentiate between original and duplicate IDs with identical names.

Another design fault is that we lost the ability to add comments to cast/crew submissions. That feature has been written back in, but the comments do not appear in our submission history so serve no purpose if submitting to a guide you edit. However, auto-approval PMs, with details of the submission, are now sent to editors for every change they make to guides they edit, clogging up their in-boxes.

If we manually add new people, the names are corrupted. If we edit people profiles, they are given a death date of 1 January 2008. These death dates cannot be removed.

Show summary edits impose an end date of 1 January 2008 on new and returning shows.

The other forms are ostensibly unchanged, although they have new CP values. Nevertheless, the limited amount of reengineering has broken them. If we add new episodes to a new season, they go to season 0, and cannot be moved. Summaries routinely fail some HTML test despite not using HTML coding. If the episode is accepted, the summary is liable not to take. Edits to existing summaries and recaps do not take.

There are formatting issues around Notes, Quotes and Trivia, with the loss of line breaks. At approval stage, editors see raw xHTML code. Initially, Trivia and Quotes submissions to people guides were going to Quotes and Trivia respectively.

A significant percentage of submissions do not go anywhere. If they do, and the submission is (auto-)approved, the edits are liable to be lost. When renumbering a season using the new episode renumbering tool, some edits are liable to fail. These pass to the editor's own queue, and cannot be accessed by the editor. I had jaxiecracks attempt to remove these using the notorious Push button, but one submission cannot be shifted and is apparently there for good. My submissions history shows a blank entry where the name of an actor should be. Staff cannot see that submission, so it will remain pending. I submitted a new episode, and tried to edit it. Those submissions are also lost in pending hell.

All of this madness was introduced at a time that the system was already broken. CPs had not been correctly tallied across the board since April, and had to be recalculated every week or so. That problem seems to have been addressed by the new system, which updates CPs in real time. A more serious issue is that of user levels, as the system has been broken for over a year, requiring a forced catch-up every four or five days. The problem is compounded by an unaddressed bug, which has reduced the level of many individuals.

Note also that the new system was introduced at the beginning of July. In 2005, when we had far fewer problems, the levelling system broke down completely in June and was not fixed until 13 July. In 2006, when we had a number of serious issues, the levelling system broke down completely on 29 June and was not fixed until 14 July. It seems that everyone in the company downs tools and takes a long week off to celebrate some local holiday at this time of year. This time, we are not simply dealing with a few bugs here and there, but major design flaws in a form and a process that has been in development for months. Part of the problem relates to the loss of data in approved submissions, a problem that has existed in a less severe form for well over a year, without any prospect of resolution. It beggars belief that such wide-ranging changes should be introduced, without the benefit of intensive user testing, to a complex system that is already falling over.

In the meantime, one had best avoid submitting episodes, notes, quotes, allusions, trivia, bios, cast, crew, or indeed edits of any of these. I am happy to accept any other submissions!

Elvis has left the building, and when he gets back he has a lot of work to do.

With this week's increase, I have reached Level 75. That didn't take too long: 16 days and 970 submissions. Rowdy Roddy Piper is one of those pretend-wrestlers, apparently. A good reason for pushing on to 76?

Some more editorial dismissals, and two new editorships. I lost my Trusted status for Heartbeat on 3 April 2007. I had racked up a number of points by virtue of correcting credits that used duplicate IDs, and the editor awarded me a rare TU slot. He lost interest in the site when pulled up over the practice of making multiple submissions, and eventually retired. The TU slot was lost during the last major editorship bug, and the guide eventually acquired a new editor. The new chap hadn't contributed to the site in over a year, and had already been stripped of all editorships. Submissions to the guide were being approved by staff, and new episodes were being duplicated. When the editor failed to visit the site for a number of weeks, I reported him missing. Nothing happened, so I decided to outstrip the editor's points tally, undertaking some overdue restructuring, making 10 submissions a day to correct episode numbering that had been out since TVTome days. Yesterday he was dismissed, my outstanding submissions were approved, and I have a commanding CP lead for a soap that I haven't watched since one episode in the first season some 15 years ago.

Meanwhile, for some months I have been submitting one cast correction a week to the Family Affairs guide. I had identified a number of duplicate IDs in use as star credits for the guide. The editor agreed to make the necessary corrections at summary level, but chose not to correct them at episode level. I corrected most of these, but one actor had so many credits that I decided to adopt a gentle approach, waiting until one submission was approved before making the next. It soon became clear that the editor had disappeared, but I was happy with the arrangement: the show had ended years ago, and noone else was submitting to the guide. The editor was unexpectedly retired yesterday, and I acquired editorship of a soap that I have never seen.

So, Family Affairs and Heartbeat join my little collection of unexpected or unwelcome editorships.

My personal website went off line today, so my personal image, icon and banner (which were all hosted on that site) were lost. After experimenting with some alternative pictures, I noticed that we can now upload personal images directly through Preferences, as originally intended. It's been some months since the feature was launched, so it is worth noting that it now works properly!

For the legions of you who haven't asked, my default image is of Philip Whitchurch, seen in character as Chief Inspector Philip Cato ("the bald-headed bastard from Barton Street") from The Bill.

With this week's increase, I have reached Level 74. The Chicken Lady, the result of a love tryst between a farmer and a chicken :? is from the Kids in the Hall sketch show. Now, that's good to know!

I am now the editor for some 200 show guides, ostensibly far too many. In practice, however, I am only moderating submissions to half a dozen guides, so it's not at all onerous. My weekly schedule involves essential submissions to currently airing shows (I generally have two or three of these on the go at any one time) and revisiting all of the guides to non-airing shows in alphabetical order, updating cast and crew with information from industry sources. As I go, I also identify duplicate and corrupted IDs and make essential corrections to other show guides. If, in the process, I see a neglected British police/crime/spy/SF drama, I will complete it and acquire it. If I find a non-genre show guide where correcting a show star will give me a load of points, I normally contribute to it under another ID. I have also pretty much run out of police and S.F. dramas to contribute to, allowing me to concentrate on revisions.

There are, of course, new genre shows launching all the time—the British TV industry is so cautious at the moment that there is a tendency to play safe and launch police/detective dramas—and as I normally watch these it is natural that I would want to contribute. I know it sounds strange, coming from someone who has acquired so many guides, but as remarked before and elsewhere I find that with my lack of imagination it is in practice impossible legitimately to compete for editorship with someone who is able to rack up 80 points or more on a show before launch.

I've stepped up my level of contributions this past couple of weeks, and have raced through Level 73; if the level updates were running smoothly, I'd be on Level 74 now: as it is, I have to wait until this week's forced update, on or around 23 May. I see that I have slipped back to fourth position in the list of site rankings. The Top 4 are all now ranked in order of the number of approved submissions made, for the first time since late 2005, so all is as it should be in advance of the new level process promised for early 2007!

On which subject, I want to mark the passing of missribs. I have seen the wailing and gnashing of teeth over her departure. Despite our personal clashes, I think missribs was broadly a force for good, particularly for the manner in which she opened up communication channels that had been closed under snide's reign of terror. (Of course, it was a bit of a pain when I failed Mad_Buck's notorious loyalty test and woke up to find myself in purdah, just outside Coventry. I see that missribs went to all the trouble, while working her notice, of reading all of those unread PMs dating back to last summer. ) She leaves the site in the more than capable hands of danmod, who has been at the heart of all the good work achieved over the past couple of years. Together with jaxiecracks and emaldalani, who have also consistently shown themselves to be dedicated, proactive and as good as their words, we have an impressive customer-facing team. The site could not be in better hands, and I look forward to developments over the coming months.
