Thanks to danmod for the suggestions for the Editor's Blog spot. Plot spoilers it is!

Today, I shall be mostly updating the cast of Dixon of Dock Green, then settling down to watch the antepenultimate episode of Doctor Who. With The Basil Brush Show enjoying a revival, and the English obsessing about the World Cup, it feels like the 1960s!

I'm not convinced about the new Editors's Blog feature. These seem to be intended as a vehicle by which the editor can communicate news about the show. What news could there be that isn't suitable for the Summary or Forums? Oh, well, perhaps once I have seen what everyone else is doing I shall have a clearer idea!

A more immediately helpful and informative feature is the new Community Statistics panel at the front end to the forums. Whereas the old front page told us the names of all forum moderators, the new panel tells us how many members are signed in (precious few) and how many staff members and moderators (none). I always though that TV.com was a minority pursuit! I guess the other 3·6 million users* will be along shortly!

There is also the ability to search for members, yet another feature that MacDeacon called for in his excellent Suggestions for Enhancements blog.

Before she went, missribs was asking about person IDs that don't show up on searching. It seems that there are rather a lot of these, which completely undercuts attempts to rationalise person IDs. It's not all bad news, however. You can still add credits to a hidden person guide using the Manually Add a Guest Star function, provided that what you are inputting in the First, Middle and Last Name fields matches those on the existing person guide exactly. That may mean that you have to go into the person guide and infill those fields for a guide created at TVTome (in the range up to 372591). In the meantime, staff do want to know about all the unsearchable IDs we find so that these can be added to the database search engine: see the Actors missing from search thread.

Quite a busy weekend on here. A few of the guides I edit are currently running shows. In the predicted course of events, I would be editing a lot of submissions from viewers of those shows: in practice, I have to maintain a lot of these myself, as submissions have dried up. Thanks then, to those who do submit, notably to Doctor Who and The Bill. Not such warm thanks, though, to the pest, who, every Monday, submits a mistyped copy of the first couple of sentences of the official synopsis for The Bill to be followed, later in the week, by a cast list, submitted ahead of the release of the confirmed cast, including absent actors, incomplete character names and mis-spelled actor names. This week and last, he submitted a further butchered synopsis before I got an acceptable one (from another contributor) to approve. Leave me alone! How would you like it if I tried to ruin the show guides that you edit? Oh, too late! You beat me to it…

I have now completed the renumbering of episodes for Dixon of Dock Green, taking on board an omitted episode, and six episodes sharing three lifetime numbers. I have now begun sorting the episode stars for each episode: five actor-characters from the summary level at TVTome have populated each episode: one appeared for only 14 years, and one uses a duplicate ID and appeared for only 8 years. As I am having to correct these details anyway, I am taking the opportunity to assign the correct ranks to officers as I go. As I get on to the later episodes, I shall have to replace existing guest credits with ones with character names attached.

I also took some time out to deal with the last few episodes of Doctor Who Confidential, which has been neglected of late, as I have been busy elsewhere and former contributors have found better outlets for their activity. These shows feature interviews with creators, crew and actors, but these are credited on-screen during the show, so there is no alternative to sitting through each episode and freeze-framing as required. Meanwhile, UKTV Gold is running episodes of The Bill from 2003, just before I started cataloguing the show, so I am revisiting those episodes as they are broadcast.

Thanks to angelandspike, who has posted her Unofficial Bug List on the Technical Support Board. This is the ideal time to post the list, as TPTB at TV.com are responding to user input like never before, and the technical bods are making significant progress on many bugs.

You can end up missing people in the most unexpected of ways. I always found a certain person (what was her name again? I cannot recall) hijacking of the forums a trifle arrogant ("don't post here, post in my thread!") but she was pretty good at dealing with questions from newbie contributors. The forums are now being overrun by people who can't be bothered looking for an answer before posting their questions over and over about submissions and levels or adding new shows, generally posting in the incorrect forums or highjacking existing threads. Taken together with the fact that two of the offenders are fighting some kind of war with one another, I spent much time last night responding to and/or reporting posts! Oh well, back to submissions now. Evening all!

missribs PMd to say that the apostrophe bug has been fixed. afenla created a new ID with an apostrophe, I was able to add the same person to a handful of episode guides, and now the guy is searchable. Kudos to all concerned in addressing this long standing niggle.

Smile! It could be worse! It's Friday, and you've survived another week…

Happy news on the job front. I have decided to take on a database management role with "The Firm" at the second time of asking. I knocked them back last month, but they have now come back with an improved package. It will be a wrench to leave the analytical field, as I feel that I have really made a difference and certainly learned a lot, but I am rather looking forward to going back to project work after a couple of years away. It's a two-year deal and then, who knows?

Not a busy day at all. I was just too tired from goings on at work to get into all this today. I have, however, updated the list of shows in need of an editor at Editorless Guides because The_Unknown2 has resigned from some that he inherited after the night of the long knives. I shall revisit these this weekend as, presumably, some more new editorships will be awarded in light of a batch of submissions last week. Oh, and a certain person has set her profile to "private".

Kudos to angelandspike, who has collated a list of bugs and emailed them to missribs. Great strides have been made over the last couple of months, both in terms of bug fixing and two-way communications, so I remain optimistic that most of these will be addressed soon.

I have been waving like the drowning man trying to get delivery of a couple of essential enhancements, too. I want to be able to assign episodes to Season 0, and to edit episodes that are already there. And I want them to expand the list of show start times available on the show summary drop down menu. These aren't, I think, big asks. missribs actually offered a tip yesterday on how to create a Season 0. (The recommended technique does no such thing, but it is at least an acknowledement that a feature that I have been hassling staff for since shortly after site launch might be needed, after all.) I asked again about the drop-down thing too: I do so every time she introduces a similar quick fix elsewhere on the site.

Now it's back to the grindstone. Evening all.

Glutton for punishment that I am, I have decided to embark on sorting the show guide to Dixon of Dock Green. This was, until last year, the longest running police drama series in the world, although, at just 434 episodes, it will be a breeze compared to certain other guides I could mention! Just adding creator credits and missing guest stars was enough to secure editorship of the show, but there are more guests to add, while most of the legacy guest entries will need to be deleted and reinstated with character names, actual episode stars have to be determined and added, while some character names will need to be amended as characters are promoted or marry. I also have to deal with the existence of two episodes 117 and 199, and an omitted episode between 179 and 180.

Hmmm… I have always liked to use the occasional blog to bore one and all by recounting what an industrious chap I am, but, in the current environment, as TV.com becomes the new Salem, that last paragraph just sounds like self-justification! Oh, well…

Well, that's four hours of my life I am never getting back. Today was another day devoted to dealing with a regular contributor. (Actually, I went over to another place to let The_Unknown2 know that he had acquired a few show guides, and took an hour out to read the reaction in that place to last week's events.) Now, most of the guides I look after receive very little by way of attention from the TV.com community, but I do have one dedicated contributor to The Bill. Here is today's correspondence, in full and unedited. It doesn't show me in the best of light, but setting the correspondence in context is the only way I know to convey the horror of it all. This has been going on since October 2005 and, 100+ rejections and scores of PMs later, I have reached the stage where I dread receiving a submission from him. I refuse to reject a submission without explanation, but the explanations and advice go unheeded, further similar or duplicate submissions are made, and I find myself compelled to check understanding, establish that there is none, and break it down into child-sized pieces. Names have been obscured to protect the guilty!

From: TheOldBill 06/11/2006 6:16:53 PM
That doesn't look like any Thames production code that I have ever seen. Bearing in mind how seriously TV.com regards the posting of bogus production numbers, can you confirm the source for your information?

From: TheOldBill 06/12/2006 4:29:09 PM
I have written to you asking you to confirm the source for the production code for Funny Ol' Business. I still need your reply.

I wrote to you earlier querying the actual episode in which Michael Chapman took over as Executive Producer. Rather than reply, you have resubmitted, correcting an obvious error but not answering the question: was this the actual episode in which the change was made? How do you know?

Please understand that, as the only person ever to submit false information to any of my show guides, I cannot accept what you say on trust. I need you to tell me where you think you got the information from so that I can either accept these submissions, or take appropriate action. Please be so kind as to reply to me today.

From: TheOldBill 06/12/2006 4:46:14 PM
You are trying to add production number 100 as the production number for Funny Ol' Business.

I asked you: "Where did you get this information?"
You replied: "I thought they needed it on"

You are now saying that Michael Chapman became Executive Producer of the Bill from the episode Getting It Right. That may be true: my best information just tells me that this happened in 1989, not which episode.

I asked you:"Where did you get the information from?"
You replied:"Getting It Right"
Please tell me where you got the information from, so that I can check. If your source is good, I will accept these submissions. If it is not, or if you do not answer these simple questions, I will not be able to accept these submissions.

I told you, when rejecting your submission claiming that this was Peter Cregeen's last episode and Michael Champman's first, that the best information held was that Chapman became EP at some point in 1989. Your source (IMdB) simply restates this. It doesn't say January 1989, and it doesn't say that Chapman was EP for this episode. Your submission should not have been made, after the advice I gave you on the last one, it cannot be substantiated, and is therefore rejected.

You still haven't replied to my other question: where did you get the production number for "Funny Ol' Business". Think very carefully when answering this one! If I do not hear from you, at the 5th time of asking, I will take your silence very seriously indeed.

i just like the production codes on for the episodes

At 6:47:49 PM he submitted a new episode with a plagiarised summary. This was painstakingly copy-typed from another site, with typos. (This technique was adopted when I explained, for the umpteenth time, that copying and pasting from other sites was not allowed. We had to go through that with every site he could find, as, presumably, he thought each rejection was site-specific.) He submits these plagiarised synopses every week, a few hours after the details leak onto the fan community: I then reject them every week.

[EDITED] thank you for your (belated) honesty. This from a man who also thinks it a good idea to make up episodes! It is not a question of just liking the production codes on for the episodes. A production code is a real thing, and not easy to come by, as they are rarely published. Just sticking any old number in there to fill the space is both stupid and wrong. Did you know that [EDITED] were banned for life for doing the kind of thing you are doing? Do not ever try that on one of my show guides again. If I find you adding made-up production numbers to any other guides I will report you. I don't expect to hear from you again.

so i can't update the episode guide

From: TheOldBill 06/12/2006 7:36:59 PM
Anyone can update any episode guide if they have a valid contribution to make. Making up production codes is not a valid contribution. I am not going to let you ruin this guide by sticking false information on it.

sorry i wont updated any more

If only I could believe that promise. He said the same thing when he finally confessed to having made up a bunch of episodes (no, really!) for the show, with mis-spelled and uncapitalised near-sentences advising that two named officers were on the beat, or speculating on the typical day of a police officer looking out for a stolen vehicle, submissions that were accepted on my behalf by the good people at TV.com. My responses here are atypically intemperate, but after endless submission rejections and PMs over the past 8 months we do not seem to be able to get him past his determination to submit spurious information to a particular show guide. He continues to wreak havoc at a show that he was inexpicably made editor of by mistranscribing the first sentence from the DVD sleeve, and has now inherited a show from a recently banned editor. Both guides are now getting pseudo-production numbers. Frankly, he can do what he likes to those, but I am trying to protect at least one show guide from mindless sabotage, and I am just so very very tired of it all…
