Ehhhh... I think you'd be surprised. A full-time (and often more) job and a long-term relationship although it helps not having kids.

@spike6958: She never states that white male leads should be pushed completely out of video game narratives, especially existing franchises with a well established character arc although Zelda wouldn't fall into this category. Her using recently released franchises to exemplify that marketing and character development still predominately caters towards white guys isn't saying that these games shouldn't exist, as they will in droves; it's a call to developers, not just existing developers but new developers as well, for the desire to diversify in a shifting demographic landscape and to create new franchises.
The fallacy that someone needs to create content in order to advocate change and critique an aspect of art that they are dissatisfied with is rich, especially on a site dedicated to reviewing video games with a forum brimming with users who express desires and dissatisfaction towards the medium.
If you're going to attribute a quote to Carolyn Petit, you might want to use a source that actually has the quotation.
An increasing many find narrative to be a driving factor in why they play video games. Critiques on narrative weakpoints and faults should be just as welcomed as technical and mechanical critiques. Critique should be holistic, yet often times narrative is overlooked or given a pat on the back for meeting substandard requirement of existing video game narratives; the industry doesn't improve if no feedback is given; the industry doesn't improve if they're only ask to meet a low standard. A call to developers for greater representation and diversity within game narration isn't killing creative freedom. It's a call to let developers, especially AAA developers, know that they can break the traditional corporate mould, the mould that people on this forum lament over.
You still have the right to critique and even complain about their artistic decisions and ask for change in future iterations. I don't really understand this mindset, especially when you have an entire culture/website/forum based upon 'critiques' of games from many angles, even aesthetic angles. I know quite a few people on Gamespot feel that all critique of games should be directed towards game mechanics and gamplay or technical critiques that move away from the artistic nature of the medium and focus more on the performance and optimization of code--in which case they shouldn't mind an aesthetic change introducing a female avatar--but aesthetics are extremely important in a visual medium.
Refer to my earlier response; imposing a female option is the same as telling someone how to be creative. If they don't want to, you can't really force them to.

I guess it sounds "better" to come up with an excuse of some kind, but in the end they could just say "we wanted him to be male and male alone" and no one has any right to complain.
It's their game/work of art/project. They can do whatever the heck they want.

Yeah they are going down a Steambox route and killing the idea of generations, although the UI will look different it will essentially just be a Windows 10 PC or HTPC (form factor) with a permanent big picture mode laid on top. The Xbox One is kinda already like this, since they launched the Windows 10 update.
XBOX gamers are now PC gamers (master race?), Sony will likely do something similar in the future once NEO launches. Nintendo will just do whatever they want, and no one will care.
If they're iterative consoles, then eventually there will be titles that the Xbox One will not be able to play, the Scorpio will be able to play on lower settings, and the Xbox One successor will be able to run on higher settings. If this is the case, then the quote from Phil Spenser is false, and if this is not the case, then it just means that Scorpio is in a contained and defined generational period.
What's the point of it then? Devs won't take full advantage of the hardware.
Much like the NEO, it's probably for VR. I'm going to bet Oculus and MS are working on the rift working with the Scorpio.
But if the Rift doesn't work on an Xbox One, then there will be exclusive content on the Scorpio making his statement a lie.
Sorry, OP. Unfortunately, this forum is probably one of the worst places to try to get people to empathize with inclusive game options or games that break from traditional moulds.
I'm sure if we actually attended we would have seen more, but this E3 seemed like all they did was update us about game we already new about. It was just one big ad for all the companies; do independent studios even attend E3? Were there any non-AAA games present?
Independent studios probably wouldn't be able to foot the bill unless they have a publisher like Devolver Digital or Adult Swim covering them. There were a few smaller studios that presented games, but E3 is mainly for companies with large budgets to show off and advertise their newest, expensive game. It's an exposition; it's suppose to be one big ad for companies to attract business. Unfortunately, due to hardware advances the trend of reiteration on previous announced games will continue as game development time is just going to increase for these large productions.
