Don't ever play music, use headphones. Nothing is more annoying than some asshole who thinks you've got the same taste in music. Assume nobody likes your music. Keep the room clean. Chances are it's a small space. Keep it somewhat clean. Flush the toilet. Keep your door locked, do not leave it unlocked for any reason whatsoever. People WILL steal your shit. People not including your roommate.

This. Everyone steals stuff in the dorm, never trust anyone in the dorms including friends you make, because they know you or them will leave eventually. I cannot stress that people will steal stuff even if they are your friends. Also on the subject of illegal things, if your in the dorms you will eventually get caught by RA's.
