I think reading reviews and watching gameplay videos is the best way to inform yourself about a game. I dont think buying $60 games on day one is a good idea anymore since it seems that now a days most games at launch are full of bugs/glitches that dont get patched for couple of months. *cough* ps3's skyrim, bf3, dead island :(*cough* But yeah, checking forums is another good way to see if gamers may recognize and list such bugs/glitches or even if the game isn't hyped up what used to be after few weeks.
