Psychoanalysis of Terra

Psychoanalysis of Terra By Torish R. Sisko In order to solve this problem you have to think of Terra as more than just a simple person. You have to think of her as an individual person with an individual history that shaped an individual personality. She isn’t simply a normal person off the street. She has been through a lot and that must be taken into account. The first thing we need to look at is her age. She seems to be older than 13 but definitely no older than 16 or 17 at the oldest. At that age she was probably a runaway. At her first appearance we learn that she is a traveler. She seems to be running away from something in her past. Probably an accident with her powers hurt someone. This tells us a lot. She is obviously recovering from some kind of traumatic experience. At her age running away from it was probably the last thing she should have done but, that is what ignorant kids do when they are in trouble. Now she is traveling around looking for acceptance somewhere. People who are looking for something are naturally gullible. For example, if someone wants something bad enough most people will jump on an opportunity even if it isn’t the best for them. Also if someone want a certain thing bad enough most people will let go of opportunities in hopes of attaining their ultimate goal. Finally when she meets the Titans she thinks she found what she is looking for. They accept her with open arms. Later in that episode she shows us that she is ashamed of her lack of control when she forces BB to promise not to tell the others about it. This fact further confirms the assumption that something bad must have happened in the past involving her lack of control. Guilt and shame is common among people who suffer from a traumatic past. Later in the episode while Terra is fighting with Slade, he says the following: Slade: I know your secret, little girl. Terra: No! Slade: Earthquakes. Avalanches. Mudslides. Everywhere you go, you try to do good. And everywhere you fail. So everyone turns against you. This confirms it. She isn’t running from her lack of control. She is running from her past. Then Slade offers to her what she wants the most, control. However Slade is an expert manipulator. He knows how suggestive her mind is. He also knows that she thinks she has found acceptance with the Titans. He knows he must break her of it. So he tells her that they are going to turn on her. He turns her friends into the enemy. Then he brings up BB. Slade has and extensive surveillance system so he knows of the promise BB made. He tells her that BB will tell the others her secret. Slade knows that eventually the other Titans will bring up the fact that she doesn’t have control and she will think BB told them. This will break the bond that she has with them. After Slade tells her this she starts to get angry. Slade knows how to make her loose control. And he accomplishes it and in the process exposes her secret to the other Titans. Later at the moment when she fells the best because the Titans asked her to be one of them the topic of her lack of control comes up and it hits her hard. Immediately she feels betrayed by BB. She is angry and runs away. This was in fact Slade’s plan all along. Compare it to torturing someone. If you inflict pain on someone constantly hour after hour day after day eventually they will learn to tone it down. However if you inflict enormous pain at one time and then give them a relatively pleasurable experience and then take it away by inflicting pain yet again the mind will start to break down and collapse on itself. The person will begin to go insane and be susceptible to suggestion. This is what Terra has been going through her whole life. She would feel at home somewhere and then something would happen and she would be rejected. This would happen time after time and Slade knew how to harness this in order to control her. Slade pushed her in just the right way to cause her to break down. What happened with the Titans must have been close to the breaking point for Terra. Then when she ran away Slade was free to control her even more. I imagine he met with her again to tell her “I told you so”. In the mind of someone like that they are not thinking logically. People like that feel that the problem is themselves. Slade knows this and he offers her a solution. It is like a young child who is being abused. They don’t think that their parent is being mean. They think that they did something wrong. That is why abused children often grow up to become drug addicts and bums. That kind of treatment rewires their minds. At the time they think they are doing the right thing. They think they are getting better. And Slade knows this. I imagine that during the time when Terra wasn’t with the Titans. She was being trained by Slade. He was, like he promised, helping her control her powers, but, he was also teaching her his evilness. He taught her to hate. Her hate started out with her thinking BB betrayed her. Hate is a strange emotion. It eats at you and tears away your humanity. Hate is what enables people’s evil nature to come to their skin. People in this state don’t think in a logical fashion. Even though Terra knew what was going to happen she wasn’t thinking of the consequences. It was just the hate that she was thinking about. Then Slade sent her to infiltrate the Titans. She felt she was doing the right thing. That is what evil does to you. Slade taught her to manipulate the Titans and she did brilliantly. She didn’t acknowledge the consequences of what she did until she came face to face with BB knowing what was going to happen. When BB asked her out she realized what was going to happen and decided to intervene. However her past caused her to not tell the other Titans. She took BB in order to save him. She was afraid that the other Titans would shun her like everyone else in the world did. So she lied. She didn’t come to terms with what she did until he decided to tell BB. But Slade showed up and prevented her from telling BB herself. This sparked hatred in BB and caused him to say those infamous words, “Slade was right. You don’t have any friends.” This hit Terra like a two by four. That was the last straw that took what humanity Terra had left. That ate away the last of her restraint and let her full evil side come to bear. When Terra comes back she has so much hatred for the Titans that she is willing to kill them in order to fell normal again. Slade was brilliant. He caused her to feel that the Titans were the problem. The Titans were the ones causing her to feel the way she did. She wanted to feel relieved. Then she picked the Titans off one by one. Slade taught her to manipulate them in order to accomplish what he told her top do. Taunting Raven is the main cause for Ravens defeat. Then she gets each other Titan in similar ways. Finally she gets them all. In the Final episode we see Terra at the beginning. She doesn’t seem too happy. She thinks that she killed the Titans. She is thinking to herself that she should be feeling better but, she is not. She is confused. She pretends to be happy about what she did but that is only a guise for until she can sort herself out. Then the Titans come back. She fights them like she was taught but this time her heart isn’t into it. She is confused because she knows that killing them wasn’t the answer. However Slade still has control over her. Especially when he utilizes the neural interface built into her suit. When that wasn’t enough Terra ran back to Slades HQ. Then Slade hits her for disobeying. That was Slades mistake. This action sorted everything out for Terra. She tries to escape but Slade used the neural interface to control her. When BB comes to get Terra he realizes what is up. He realizes he can still save her. A struggle ensues and BB is stuck and is at the mercy of the Terra’s powers. Terra resists Slades control but it isn’t enough. Right when she is about to finish BB the other Titans come and surround them. Then BB gives some insightful words to Terra and she struggles as hard as she can and breaks Slades grip. Then a fight between Slade and Terra occurs. The mental and physical stress Terra is feeling manifests itself in Terra's power. So much so that it triggers a volcanic eruption. Slade falls into the magma and melts away. The eruption grows in intensity and threatens the entire city. Terra uses her power to stop the eruption. She uses so much power that it changes her molecular structure to that of the earth she controls. Her final thoughts were not to die. They were to save the people who ended up being there for her from the start. Even though she had free will Terra was manipulated into the evil ways. Had Terra never met Slade she would have probably found a way to do good in life. In the end Slades brainwashing backfired and Terra made the right choice. You have to be a very rigid person to disagree. Feel free to disagree. ~Torish R. Sisko~
