In a interview with Siliconera, Resident Evil 6 executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi reveals why Capcom decided to bring back the zombies to the series. In some of the most recent main titles in the series, Capcom introduced us to many new creatures like the Ganado and Majini in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 and the Ooze in RE Revelations - but no zombies.
"We brought zombies back because they're popular. Everyone loves em, that's why we brought them back," Kobayashi said, speaking to Siliconera. "Based on feedback from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the fact that there weren't classic zombies in those games and people really wanted them. We tried to respond to the requests and put them in this game. We tweaked them a bit so they aren't the same zombies you would expect."
The zombies in Resident Evil 6 aren't like the ones we know and have seen in games and films. These zombies are much faster and smarter. They even pick up weapons and use them when they find them.
"It's not that we decided zombies should use weapons per se. It's just that we wanted to get across the feeling that these used to be people and people either picked up weapons when they were fighting or they used certain objects when they were alive," Kobayashi said. "It's not that they are purposely using weapons, it's in the back of their mind because they used to use weapons before they became zombies."
Kobayashi also revealed that there will be other ways for the player to interact with zombies when fighting them. It will be a key component that will be revealed at a later date, he said.
