Call him out on this and see if he gets embarrassed. He sounds beta as f*** so he probably loves her. When he mumbles whatever lie he can assemble you call him out on it and ask if she sees him that way. She won't, he's friendzoned. Tell him he has his answer and he can accept it and move on or continue being immature - either way you want to go out with this girl. She will be impressed by your smarts and confidence and you'll probably get some right there on the spot in front of him.
