read well, Carmack did nothing but make a decent engine

by the way, find some interviews, John Romero left Id software because Carmack and the others were out drinking and mucking around, Romero pretty much made Quake all by himself, im not joking

FEAR 1 shouldn't count. It does have very good AI but its limited to small corridors and you always approach enemies in the same way. What about Company of Heroes or Batman: AA - that game has very entertaining AI.

Going back a bit nothing could touch the marines in HL1
