there is a very thin wire down the centre of the ac adapter cable that dell laptops and their bios use to detect it is a real dell adapter. this is very easily damaged and once its snapped completely the laptop/bios will not accept the adapter as a genuine dell so will not allow it to charge the battery. this is controlled in the bios so dell could remove the check but they haven't on my alienware m15x yet (v A09). it starts becoming flaky as its gets worn then snaps and won't charge the battery at all. just replace the adapter but make sure it is exactly the same specs inc. wattage as your original. i got mine for $30. baz
