I used to work at valve corp before going to insomniac. While there I worked on HL2, EP1, and a little of EP2. While beta testing these there was a farely large group of people that said: A cover system would make thi game amazing, but right now its pretty mediocre." I knew we wouldn't implement a coversystem in any Valve games because Cover Systems don't make the game, oh, and we didn't need to waste time on a coversystem, we had to make a story, you know, the plot for the game? Oh theres a plot to most games, some people rather just shoot stuff from cover than pay attention to the story.

Then of course, I went to insomniac, while there i participated for some Beta Testing for sony. I played Haze, I thought it was one of the most amazing consoloe games i had ever seen. PC like graphics, great controls and no stupid wayss to use sixaxaxis, the AI was also great and the scenes i saw implemented a great story. Then, after the test we were to go into a conference room to see what the game needed, I said a few less framerate jitters and everyone basically agreed. So i went home, and got on youtube to see if i could find some videos of haze. I found one and went to watch it. Then i saw the comments, alot of people were going:

"theres no cover system in there like R6 of GEARS, so its just a mediocre AT BEST FPS"

Then Haze got a dely so they could construct SOME sort of cover system, noting majot just little ways for cover. Then it got delayed again and again.

Basically the question is:

Do cover systems REALLY inhance the game experience? Does it inhance some games? all games? Do games need cover to be awsome? Are games without cover systems mediocre or bad? what do you think?

P.S. Just thought you should know what i do at insomniac, I am a Level designer and there is no cover in Resistance 2 and well never consider it.

Cwagmire21

Wouldn't the company you work for not appreciate you talking about a games they haven't released yet.

The NDA on Haze was lifted when it got delayed and I didn't reveal anyhting about Resistance 2 except for that piece of not having some crap cover sytem put in so i still get paid(=

Cover systems DO make the game... Gears of War was gonna be another crap FPS. It would have nowhere near gotten the recognition it got.

AND QUIT SAYING COVER SYSTEMS LIKE GEARS OF WAR... they didn't invent it, the developers even said they took it from Killswitch.

tommcruise

yeah, they didn't invent it, people just say they perfected it, also, FPS game dont need cover, but in TPS game sTHEY NEED IT

it brings a sense of reality to the game. in real life i'm not going to stand there jumping around shooting people while i take shots. im going to grab cover and shoot from around it.Kobewars87

The point of videogames is TOO have fun and certaiin games rather have fun than have a Cover System that makes some enemies hard to hit

Good cover systems like Gears IMO can give a brand new aspect to a game, however bad cover systems such as Mass Effect can simply reap away any good that game had to offer.cleotis_max

Actually the cover sytem in Mass Effect is very simple, thats good, because the fact that i could kill every enemy from behind cover in gears made me think the game was easy

Anyone here read Gameinformer? theres aletter from a dude in there saying mass effect is total garbage and that it can't compare to halo or the mediocre(at best) timeshift. He also stated that he never got to the second battle, cause he didn't know how to get to it.

I am sorry but this is a stupid person. Mass Effect is tied for most original game on my list, tied with ratchet and clank, thje fact that i could punch and bully people is a amazing. Plus, since i almost always think cover systems are stupid, it had a simple to navigate and fun to use cover system.

Basically, My Question Is:

Are the Casual Gamers destroying the games we love? Have all the big Corporations forgot about the people that started their buisness?

No, seriously, look at the sales for mass effect, then Halo and Madden, Halo and same as last year football gamesell MILLIONS, while Mass Effect can barely go Platinum, certain games are gamers games. Mass Effect is a gamer game.

Halo, is for frats.

Did anyone else not like The Most Original Game EVER? (in sci fi)

OfficialBed

i'm not saying that i agree with him.....but saying "I am sorry but this is a stupid person." is dumb.....he's just giving his opinion...just because you don't like what he says doesn't mean he's a stupid person

ah, see, hm, how do i say this. He only played through 45 or so minutes of the game, he got to the citadel and he didn;t know what to do. Then he complained cause he thought the cover system was too normal for him and that he wouldve liked it more if it was like gears. I personally hated the gears of war cover system because it was basically cheating, you hid begind cover, then you blind fired but you could still see your target, thats cheating i think

Holy S*** kid calm down...its just a video game....your acting like its a huge deal

If you like the game...well thats just peachy for you, but not everyone likes what you like, get use to it

Dark_knight24

okay, fine, not everyone likes what I like but thats not the point, the point is that SOME casual games and theyre players are destroying our hobby.

Also, it is a huge deal

I've said it before, and I'm saying it again, shallow gamers with no mind for story destroy great games and leave us with mindless games. Legacy of Kain and Baldur's Gate deserve more credit than they've recieved, for example. Unfortunately more people will buy Rock Band than Mass Effect, and so mindless games will continue to be vomited out at us.Haeravon

Now, now, I know were angry but I enjoy rock band when friends are over.
