Extreme Shift in DDR Venue

Because of the recent change in my living arrangements, it looks like I won't be playing DDR as much for a while, at least not the home version. I'll likely be playing in the arcade more often now. I'm getting ready to finally start a season in Madden as the NFL season is about to really kick off. I'm also doing to seasons in NCAA, one for my new "Race for the Heisman" player with the Oklahoma Sooners, and one with the Michigan Wolverines to follow my school through the season.

My player won the Heisman award his freshman year so it seems likely he'll be able to enter the draft after Junior or Senior year.

I'm still working on Final Fantasy X-2. I'm currently finishing up the final tasks in the Calm Lands. Hopefully it won't be too long before I finish it.

Performed surgery on my DDR pad.

Recently, my ignition DDR pad had been screwing up on me...again. The pad, in general, still works, per se, but buttons would "stick". (See my previous entry on my screwed up DDR pad). After some internet research, i've found that most of the problems associated with DDR pads have to do with a cheap sheet of foam placed in between two layers of sensor circuits inside the pads. These two layers must not come into and remain in contact for the pad to work properly.

There are many small, circular holes in this sheet at all allow the pad to close the circuits. Problems with unresponsive arrows usually occur when the foam layer folds over itself, covering its own holes, preventing the sensor circuit from closing, thus, the arrow connected to that area of censors, doesn't work. The problem with sticking arrows (the main problem I have), usually happens with that foam layer has been severely compressed to the point where it no longer easily refills with air, causing the sheet to become very thin, and as result, allows the two layers of sensors to come into, and remain in contact, in effect, causing the arrow to "stick" in the context of how the game itself responds to it.

I made an incision (sp?) around 3 of the 4 sides of the perimeter of the pad to get inside, and made the same type of incision through subseqent layers until I reached the foam layer. Sure enough, the foam was compressed around the arrows (though stil relatively puffed in the center) and thin. The the sheet was also a bit bunched toward the bottom of the pad. The sheet itself was also "stretched" in effect, though I don't know how it got that way, so my only option was to make the same type of incision as the previous layers, into the foam layer, and then litterally pull on the foam sheet until there was no more bunching, even though this, in effect, caused the sheet to become even thinner, but it was probably my only option. I cut off any excess foam from the pulling, and manually cut circular holes in areas where foam was covering sensor areas of the pad when before they had not. I then closed and "bandaged" the pad using duct tape (none of it is visible as all of the incisions were done in the interior of the pad), and gave it a test. I played DDR and it works, i'd say, 96% better. The pad is once again playable, I can get A's on songs and everything like I did before, but every now and then I notice "ghost steps" where the game will register steps even though I didn't make them. Also, every now and then, the pad will fail to register steps immediately after performing a jump. Both of these problems are the result of the thin sheet of foam in the pad. The ghost steps simply occur when I do a step, causing the two sensor layers to come into contact, then slowly separate, as the layers get close to completely separating, the light contact causes the control box in the pad to interpret that as a light step(s) on the arrow, causing the game to register that as steps even though I didn't perform them. The problem with the failed registering of steps after peforming a jump is simply the result of the significant force of all my weight slamming down on the pad, basically, sending a blow to the pad, causing the two sensor layers to come into significant contact through the already thin sheet of foam between them. The constant and significant contact between the sensors causes them to be unable to sense any other steps until the two layers separate. Jumps are also one of the biggest causes of the deflation of the foam in the first place.

If I want to elimanate this problem altogether, i'm gonna have to do one of two thing things. I can either go and buy a thicker, more dense sheet of foam and replace the worn out foam in the pad with it, which i'll probably do, or I can just buy a new pad altogether, but I want to avoid that option for two reasons:

1. I don't have much extra money
2. I want the next DDR pad I buy to be a Metal Pad, I don't wanna spend any more money on softpads unless its to fix one I already have.

But anyway, I think thats my first ever surgery on video game hardware, and the surgery was a success!, lol.

NCAA Football 2006 Two-time, back to back ADT National Champions!

I have just finished my college career with a bang!!!!! For my senior year, South Carolina went undefeated once again, defeating Michigan, the school I actually attend in real life, for the national championship! I finished my phase of the career without winning the Heisman, however, our starting HB, a sophomore, won the Heisman! I was considered for the "Best WR" award, but didn't win, but the fact that I was on the list shows I got recognition.

To recap:

I was recruited with an athletic scholarship as a Wide Reciever to the South Carolina Gamecocks. At the time, the Gamecocks were ranked #45 I think. Freshman year we had a pretty good season winning most of our games and moving up in the polls, and finished the season with a 9-3 record and the winners of the Capitol One Bowl. I remember that year we had an excellent HB, a junior that was super quick and had little trouble dusting the opposition. He had the recognition of the Heisman voters, but didn't win. However, he did win the Maxwell. We also had the #1 rated defense in the NCAA. After the season was over, I think he may have entered the NFL draft as he was no longer on the roster. That season ended with momentum that I believe sparked our potential to ignite.

Sophomore year, the Gamecocks had more respect after likely spawning from our success the previous season. We began the season ranked in the top 25. We had a strong team this year as well. Once again, our defense was rated #1. And I believe it was this year that I became an impact player on the team. There were two very good fellow WR during my freshman whom were both Senior and had then graduated. So I had to step up as the head WR. Our replacement HB was very good at getting yards. And was vital to our offense, but simply lacked the speed and explosiveness of his running that our HB the year before had. We were very consisten with our wins throughout most of the season, going undefeated for the majority of it. We had gotten pretty high up in the polls and I was really hoping to have a shot at the National Championship. I think we were ranked 4, 5, or 6, and there were teams ahead us of that had losses on their record, but simply more poll points than we had, despite the fact that we had a better record. Then, we eventually faced Florida, who shattered my championship hopes that year by defeating us in overtime. We dropped in the polls, and never came close to the #2 spot again that season. However, as we still had the best record in the Southeastern Conference, we played for the Conference Championship and won. We also recieved a bid to play in the Rose Bowl, but lost. That year we had an overall record of 10-2. And our coach won Coach of the Year.

Junior year, we once again started off high the polls. Once again, our HB, while not a very speedy runnter, was still very good at breaking tackles and fighting for yards, he remained vital to our offense and put up very good stats that season. Our defense, yet again, remained strong. I think at one part of the season, that were ranked #2 or #3, but I believe by the season's end, they were once again ranked #1. The season we were VERY strong. I was putting up some of best number of my career thus far, making fantastic catches and became a real "go-to" man on the offense. That season we went undefeated. I think for maybe at least half the season, we were ranked #1. We played LSU, who happened to be ranked #2, for the SEC championship. We were both slated to play for the championship, but ultimately, one of us was doomed not to as the loser was bound to drop down in the polls. We defeated LSU, which I believe was the second time we played and defeated them that season, and won the SEC Championshp for the Second Year in a Row. We then played, I can't remember exactly, maybe Miami in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship. This was so excited because a national championship is something i'd really been wanted since Sophomore, and maybe Freshman year. We won the Sugar Bowl, thus, we won the National Championship, completing our perfect season. The Gamecocks were then 2-time, back-to-back SEC Champions, and ADT National Champions. Our coach once again won coach of the year, become a two-time, back-to-back, Coach of the Year.

Senior year, lol, we began the season ranked #2 and not #1. This was my first year without the QB who had been throwing me the ball for the last three years as he graduated. We had a new starting QB who was also a senior. A quality that I especially like about it was that he could run, therefore I could scramble, sneak, and run option plays with this QB. Something I was previously unable to do as the QB before him was pretty slow. He had a rough start. Early on his passes were very off-target and he often lead recievers too far, throwing passes out of bounds or over-throwing recievers. However, he quickly sharpened. Our HB from the previous, I assume, entered the NFL draft as we was no longer on the roster. And our replacement HB was a sophomore that had similar qualities as he was very good and breaking tackles and fighting for yards, however, this HB was faster and more able to outrun linebackers and secondary. This year, we were as solid as ever. And when I say solid, I mean SOLID. We blew out team after team after team. Some games ended with us having scored litterally 70 points with the opponents nothing more than 1 or 2 touchdowns. We also had a GREAT tight-end who was quick and consistent with receptions. I had the best year of my career, gathering the most yards, touchdowns, etc, than I ever did in one season. My FB was also very good and VERY reliable when I needed a short yardage gain, a touchdown deep in the red zone, or when my HB was tired. The defense, once again, was excellent, ranked #1. The entire team was just excellent, I mean the Special Teams unit rarely allowed any significant returns, casuing fumbles, etc. The defense shut down offenses. Our kicker could kick 50+ yard field goals, and our offense, broke down the defenses and consistently put numbers on the board. Many times we'd start of with excellent field position, sometimes in the red zone due to the outstanding defense. It was really an excellent squad. We played Auburn who was undefeated at the time for the SEC Championship, who, like LSU last year, was ranked #2 at the time, and defeated them. Then, what a way to end a college career. We played Michigan, my actual school, for the National Championship, and the last game of my college career. I think they put up the best fight we had all year. We never trailed them, we always led, but our offense stuggled on a couple series, and they pulled off some big plays on our defense. However, with some adjustments and the sheer talent and skill of the defense, they were pretty much shut down in the second half while our offense played magnificently. We ended up winning 45-20, once again becoming national champions. Our HB, after topping the Heisman watch for most of the year, won the Heisman. I finished ranked among the NCAA 1st team for Wide Recievers, with, I think an overall 94 rating as a reciever. (Not bad, eh?)

My career with the Gamecocks is finished with Capitol One Bowl win, 3-time back-to-back-to-back, SEC Champions, two-time back-to-back, ADT National Champions, winning the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl respectively, completing two straight seasons undefeated, the latter featuring a Heisman trophy winner, under a two-time back-to-back, Coach of the Year. My friends, I've ended my career with the Gamecocks not just as a great team, but also as.....a DYNASTY!!!!!!

So long South Carolina!!! NFL, here I come!!!!

ADT National Champions in NCAA Football 2006!

My player just finished up his junior year in Race for the Heisman with a bang. I didn't win the Heisman but the team had an incredible season. We finished undefeated, thus, taking home both the SEC and national championship, beating Lousiana State University Tigers in the SEC championship game (who were ranked #2 at the time) and then defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes in the National Championship Sugar Bowl. Not only that, but the coach won Coach of the Year for the second time in a row! Great season! It especially feels good as I had a shot last season, in which the team was undefeated for most of the season until we had to face Florida who beat us in overtime, causing us to drop down in the polls and pretty much destroy any hope for the National Championship that year. This year they once again presented us with a stiff challenge however, we overcame them fair and square.

I'm definitely keeping my player there for his senior year and likely final season as a college player to develop as much as possible. And as I get ready to head back into the off-season, I do so with a good amount of Heisman hype for next season. The team has already accomplished much ever since playing there. Every year we've won something. Freshman I think we went 10-3 overall, winning the Capitol One Bowl. Sophomore year, I believe we went 9-3 overall, winning the SEC Championship but losing the either the Rose or Sugar Bowl, I can't remember exactly which one, but the Coach won coach of the year. And we just finished up the Junior year going undefeated, back-to-back SEC Champions, National Champions, and with a now two-time, back-to-back, coach of the year. Also, I think the South Carolina program rating was either 3 or 4 stars when I was first recruited, now it has a full 6-star rating. And we may very well go into the next season ranked #1 as we finished the season with, I think, a 200 poll-point margin over the #2 ranked team, USC. So for my last college year, the season may actually begin with USC NOT ranked #1, something I believe has yet to happen since I've been player.

For now, I probably gonna edge back toward Madden and likely play strictly Exhibition games for the time being. I'm currently on the 70th floor in the huge dungeon in Final Fantasy X-2. 30 more to go, so I'm gonna keep working on that.

Man FFX-2 may take longer than I thought.

I really underestimated the just how much content there is in this game and how much I skipped out on my first play-through. Chapter 5 feels like its taking a LONG time. There were a lot more things to accomplish than I though. Last night I finally beat Angra Mainyu, a boss that is harder than the final boss of the game and has a rediculous amount of HP (approxmiately 333,000!). Anyway, I'm now exploring a dungeon mandatory for 100% completion that has litterally 100 floors. I'm currently on the 20th. From what i've read in the strategy guide, there are bosses in this dungeon that are harder than the final boss, too. I'm gonna have to go ALL the way to the bottom floor to defeat someone there. What has me worried is that the strategy guide strongly recommends all character's levels to be maxed out, I'm nowhere close. The guide says get to level 99, the girls aren't beyond 60. I'd probably have to do an INSANE amount of battles to level all the way up like that, something that seems like will take weeks to months. I'm not gonna go down that path unless I absolutely have to, instead, i'll try to find alternatives. I have an accessory that will enable the character wearing it to deal 9,999 HP damage per hit when her HP is fairly low, so I'll see if I can get by with that.

In the mean time, I've gone ahead and continued on into my Junior year in Race for the Heisman mode. FFX-2 is gonna take me a while. I was hoping to have the game done by the end of the week. Now I can see myself back in school and deep in studies by the time I finish the game. Man, there is such sooooooo much content in the game. WAAAAAYYY more than I expected. Like I said, I underestimated it.

Making Final Fantasy X-2 my highest priority.

I just finished up two seasons in "Race for the Heisman" mode in NCAA Football 2006. I've decided i'm not gonna start any new seasons in either that for Madden until I complete Final Fantasy X-2, or until the actual football seasons start, whichever comes first. I just finished up chapter 3 in Final Fantasy X-2 and am gonna start on chapter 4 now. I think this is the chapter where I "broke off" my attempt to complete the game 100% my first time through, so i' probably gonna start experience a lot of new content now.

Picking up Madden NFL 2006 tonight...

I have the game reserved at my local Gamestop and they will allow those with reservations into the mall and into the store tonight to pick it up. This will be my first Madden game since 2002, which I got for Gamecube around launch. I still think about how it would've been if EA didn't secure an exclusive NFL game license and 2K Sports could've made NFL 2K6. I have NFL 2K5 and man that game was such a blast. I still consider it the best football game i've ever played. It was so great and 2K really had a good thing going, only to get it legally snatched away from them. Oh well, I guess i'll find out within the next couple days whether or not Madden NFL 2006 will dethrone NFL 2K5 with me. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Quarterback Vision Cone feature tonight.

EDIT:

I just got back from the store. On my way I noticed people standing outside an EBGames. The crowd outside Gamestop wasn't all that large, but it was still a good amount of people. They gave us bags of chips to snack on while waiting and started selling them around 12:01 a.m. I guess I couldn't help but think about, once again, what it would've been like if NFL 2K6 existed. Oh well.

Well, I'm about to give the game a go. I may post impressions on it tommorow or sometime soon.

NCAA Football 2006 has consumed me!

Man , ever since I got this game the other day I've been playing it practically all day. The "Race for the Heisman" mode is awesome and addicting. I created myself as a Wide Reciever and got a scholarship to South Carolina as a Freshman starter. Its so fun and immersive this way. Its fun going through drills every week, getting fanmail, etc, and watching my player develop throughout the season. Right now the star of the team and the player mostly likely to win the Heisman on our team is the Half Back who has been playing superb. My player, I think, has the second best WR stats on the team and has been playing pretty good and consistent. The player develops as the season goes along as he gains experience and does drills. Another thing I find so sweet is that if the player does well enough in his college career, especially if you win the Heisman, you can get drafted into the NFL and import the player into Madden NFL 2006. That. Is. Awesome.

Its just so darn fun and i've played through half of the season already. I'll probably start my season my favorite school (a school I happen to attend), Michigan, as the start of the actual NCAA Football gets closer.

I really gotta keep focus on Final Fantasy X-2 as well as i've "paused" on the game once I got this. I'm not quitting on it, though, I'm gonna finish it, thats a promise.

Just got NCAA Football 2006

My mom just bought NCAA Football 2006 and reserved Madden NFL 2006 for me and i'm very grateful for that. Today i'll probably begin the time-consuming task of manually inputting rosters for a select team or teams. I may consider buying the rosters if they're is a way available for the Xbox version.

I recently discovered ways to perform better on DDR songs that I have difficulty with on Heavy mode. I've discovered that I have trouble with songs in particular in which the speed of the scrolling steps are not in good rhythm with the tempo of the song. For example, a song will be upbeat, but the steps will scroll slowly and therefore appear bunched up on the screen. Yesterday I discovered the potential usefullness of speed mods. I tend to do much better when the scrolling steps have a speed to blends with the rhythm of a song. Yesterday I believe there were a couple songs that played normally...and failed. Then tried them again with a speed mod and got an "A" on the song. i'm thankful I've discovered this because Heavy mode doesn't feel as difficult to me than it did before.

I guess my DDR pad is fine...lol

I have an Ignition DDR pad, a model with foam inserts. I was starting to notice unregistered steps from the left arrow when I knew I stepped on it. I started "testing" it out by repeatedly stepping on the arrow and observing how it registers with the game. It turns out my left arrow was indeed missing steps and getting "locked up" or "stuck". I would repeatedly step on it (the steps wouldn't register) then i'd stop, then I'd noticed a bunch of left arrow steps registering without my foot hitting the arrow.

I decided it test if it was really my pad by removing the foam inserts and playing the same songs on the pad. The pad worked like a charm, likely meaning the position of the foam inserts was somehow screwing the pad's censors. After some rearraning with the foam inserts the pad went back to working normally. I actually had a little multi-hour DDR marathon early today, wearing myself out, but my pad remained reliable, thank goodness.

Unfortunately, as the problem has been resolved, another one has risen, my PS2, probably for the 3rd time, is beginning to have some difficulty reading discs, especially with Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution which I just happen to be deeply into right now. Its kind of annoying. At its current state, the perfomance is excusable, but if it gets worse, I may just have to send it back into Sony. I hope Sony (especially with rumors the PS3 initial price tag) is designing PS3 to be a more reliable machine than its predecessor.
