Battlefield 3 has one of the worst single player campaigns of any "AAA" release in the last 10 years, so unless you have pretty much zero standards, prepare to be very underwhelmed while playing through that pile of crap.

The multiplayer has a pretty strong following though, so as long as you like the multiplayer you should be good.

Hmm. Well that makes me a little nervous to buy Battlefield 3 then, but I would only be interested in the multiplayer yes. I saw a clip of people flying jet fighters in Battlefield 3 and it looked really cool. Can you fly jet fighters in multiplayer in BF3?

@jakes: I agree about cs 1.6. Counter-strike was one of the only fps shooters that I use to play, and the original cs was very addictive :)

So I rarely play first person shooters (yes rare I know lol), but I'm looking for an fps that will make me say "wow, this is cool!".

My requirements are that it be a recent game (within the last 2 years lets say), and it has to have multiplayer. So what's a recent fps with great gameplay and great graphics?

My first guesses are Battlefield 3, or CS: GO. Are either one of those good, or better than the other? What fps's would you say are the best?

Awesome, however, EA.....+ "cool new graphics" + EA. Did I mention it's EA......uh I want this game to be good, but it's EA.....I really hope it's not a "the graphics look sweet but the gameplay is terrible" scenario as with about 15 other titles EA has taken over and smashed head first into the ground.

EA I beg you, please don't ruin Simcity.

I too am a big fan of RTS. I got hooked on the original Warcraft 1, and ever since it's all I've wanted to play, but I've been forced into playing WoW due to the lack of RTS games, as well as the poor quality. And I've never been a fan of Starcraft 2, so that rules out the 1 decent rts game in about 9 years lol. (I don't count hybrids like the Total War series in this). And I've never tried company of heroes or world in conflict yet.....don't really care to for some reason.

Anyways, I'm glad there are other people out there who are also upset at the lack of a cut and dried, simple but fun, base-building, tons-o-units, quality graphics rts games.

Heck I miss Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 1 even lol. I was very annoyed/upset when Blizzard came out with WoW and it was a success, because I knew they'd stick to WoW and not make any more rts games for a very long time (which is what made them famous in the first place :() Then they choose to do extend the Starcraft series........and they are completely ignoring the Warcraft rts series. I hope Warcraft 4 get in the works soon. Warcraft 4 please!

Probably yes :) Can't really say for sure as everyone is different, but I'm playing Simcity 4 right now and I picked it up after not playing it for years. I enjoyed Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 as well.

If you're talking about the new Simcity that is supposed to come out, I don't think it comes out for about a year (like 2013). I've enjoyed almost every Simcity game there was though.

Only a list composed of recent titles:

2009

  • Demigod
  • Battleforge
  • Sins of Solar Empire
  • Empire: Total War
  • Stormrise
  • DoW II
  • CoH: Tales of Valor
  • Codename Panzers: Cold War
  • Battlestations: Pacific
  • Age of Booty (capcom/2009, pirate RTS game, no joke)
  • Perimeter II
  • Theatre of War II
  • Kingdom under Fire II
  • Hearts of Iron III
  • World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
  • League of Legends
  • Tropico 3
  • Men of War

2010

  • Starcraft II
  • Anno 1404: Venice
  • DoW II: Chaos Rising
  • Supreme Commander 2
  • Napoleon: Total War
  • Ruse
  • The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom
  • C&C4

Sure, 2010 was a bit poor compared to 2009, but it's still a good, varied list. Though some suck, like C&C4, there are peeps out there that enjoyed it. And let's not forget about 2008, 2007, etc., etc. And classics, ..

The RTS genre is doing fine as it is, sometimes it has poor years, sometimes fine years. You can't expect anything to be successful each time, especially RTS games.

And i love AoE3.

I guess after having made this thread, what I really want in a game is base-building, something you can make your own. If you look down that list, how many of those games actually havecore rts base-building in them? Maybe 2 or 3? Only ones I can see that do are Starcraft II and Supreme Commander 2 right now. And if you don't like futuristic settings, there's basically nothing else.

And to the dude that thinks I'm crazy because I mentioned Battlefield.......notice the sentence right before that one, where I mention graphically appealing games and first person shooters.......ya, I'll leave it toyou to figure that out. I wasn't restricting myself to rts at that point -- not that it matters...."kid". I'm trying to keep this civil and to the point.

If people claim the genre has diversified greatly, then why are there nocore rts base-building/resource-gathering games that are not set in a futuristic setting? Other than Age of Empires III, one of this like has not been made in about 7 years.

The only half-way decent game released within the past two or three years with both base building and resource gathering (i.e. classic rts) is Starcraft II. That's it. And if you don't like futuristic settings........well.........you're screwed.

Some people may call it diversification, I call it the complete and utter destruction of agenre past, that used to befun.
