With the current competitive nature of the Pokemon games, and the efforts needed to raise the perfect pokemons, you might actually enjoy Pokemon MORE if you're older. While you can just catch them and level them up, making the perfect team requires a lot of planning, breeding and stuff that a younger player might not want to care about.

So I'd say try the game. You'll probably like it, especially if you like console RPGs in general.
