I have never heard a sngle logical argument against random battles "it interupts the exploration" no more than it would if you fought evemies on the screen... wither way battling enemies would take some time off exploring "the enemies are not there, then suddenly they a giant monster jumps out" just like when you walk into a room, you're not there, then suddenly you are "its an old technique that was used cause of technical limit" so? "I want to be able to avoid enemies" You can, you can run away... but even if you cant, then so what? you expect to be able to just waltz through without being attacked? my biggest problem with non-random nbattle games is that it annoying having to find enemies to fight them... and then have to walk off screen to make the fixed enemies respawn. I'd rather know that I can battle at any time I walk around in non-civilised areas
How much cooler would DQ8's world map have been if it was populated with monsters?King9999
ugh, that would suck

People are way too picky about such minor details... anyway, I much prefer turn-based combat, I favor strategy over reflexes. But on the subject of random battles, I see no problem with it what-so-ever. I wish more games today would have random battles. I dont mind having enemies on the field for me to fight there and then but what I don't like is the whole "walk upto enemy, enter battle sequence as if random battle" to me that is just the worst.

I dont like having a limited number of enemies in a room which automatically respawn with an "exit room, re-enter room" feature, that just bugs me

[QUOTE="Velocity_Eleven"]You forgot to mention Digital Devil Saga... people turning into demons needing to eat each other to survive, living in a wasteland fighting it out to reach the equivelent of heavenVandalvideo
There are quite a few that I didn't mention; Radiata, Of Mana, Persona, etc. At the end of the day the JRPG genre is way too diverse to stereotype.

i know, just giving an example... I find it so absurd how people can think that JRPGs have "spikey haired effeminate males" as I can only think of 1 or 2main characters with spikey hair throughout the 50-70 or so JRPGs I've played. None of which are effeminate

[QUOTE="luis1972"] You have that exactly the opposite. JRPGs are very similar to each other. Let me describe every JRPG ever made: hero is a teenage guy who actually looks like a girl, has several friends (one will turn out to be a love interest and at least two are little kids that are really annoying), graphics are cartoony, the story runs on rails, and each level ends in a boss fight that can only be beat by using combo/limit break/special attack often involving weapons that are two sizes too large for the characters. Basically, JRPGs are for kids. WRPGs give you more freedom. You're free to choose what your character looks like, his gender, race, class, clothes, name, etc. Environments in most WRPGs are more open. The stories are also more complex and mature, often involving complicated moral choices that change the end game. And they're not all mediaval fantasies like JRPGs. WRPGs cover everything from high fantasies (Ultima series), post-apocalyptic (Fallout series), to sci-fi (KOTOR series).Vandalvideo
I rest my case. This is the major problem with JRPG haters. They play Final Fantasy and Tales and think that every JRPG is about some efeminante hero trying to save the world from supernatural beings. Newsflash, its not. There are tons of diverse settings in JRPG games; Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Parasite Eve, Vandal Hearts, Valkyrie Profile, etc. Classifying JRPGs is extremely hard to do as well. Not to mention games like Valkyrie Profile have reaaaalllly gritty settings and graphics. The stories in JRPGs can easily be on par with WRPGs. While WRPGs do have the best story in video games, Planescape, Suikoden is pretty far up there.

You forgot to mention Digital Devil Saga... people turning into demons needing to eat each other to survive, living in a wasteland fighting it out to reach the equivelent of heaven

JRPGs have so much varience in battle system... look deeper than just "it's turn based" or "it's action based". Look at the many different ways that skills, stats ,abilities can be learned/used and how many different methods you find... literally loads

(PS. I never said that WRPGs dont do this, Im not sure about that, but from what Ive heard from WRPG fans all sounds very similar)

your "description of every JRPG ever made" is way off... guy looks like a girl? give me one example other than Larsa from FF12... graphics are cartoony, suppose so, but how is that a bad thing?... the story runs on rails, you mean just like almost every book and everyfilm ever made? And why the hell would you want to choose your character's looks? that totally degrades the whole "story-aspect" if you start it with "one day there was a guy or girl who didnt have a particular name who did what they wanted"... JPGs are all medieval fantasies? just how exactly?... And if by "WRPGs are more open" you mean "WRPG makers didnt plan their games out so you get chucked in the middle of nowhere" then I would agree there

this seems very unfair, JRPGs are mostly limited Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the millions of clones of those games, and some good ones. While WRPGs can be first person adventure games like Elder Scrolls, online games like World of Warcraft, action and and intense like Diablo, or even.... actually role playing like Fallout 1 and 2.Nerkcon

when I look at a game, I go beyond whats on the surface... I'm not bothered about whether the game is action, turn based, random battles, first person etc. cause to me that's just at face value... I always look into the deeper areas, such as how skills are developed, how things are dependant on other things, how easily can things be modified. For example i would usually not be as satified with something that's "you level up, and therefore learn the heal spell". I would much prefer something with more depth to it such as if you could modify character's abilities at the expense of something else, and have all these wacky ways of modifying your characters
