Well, hopefully this isn't too against the rules...but this is a gaming site, to discuss games and stuff, and part of that is piracy. And I won't be posting links or anything...I'm also not advocating piracy, but...hopefully this can be discussed in a mature manner.
One of my real life friends (who is moving this weekend, but thats another story) pirates everything. Okay, so the company loses 50 dollars...actually not because my real life friend is dirt poor (only can afford mcdonalds, to give you an idea), so I doubt he would go out and buy games anyway.
The thing is, he has a sort large group of friends. Take Divinity 2 for example, I never heard of it, and most of his other friends didn't either. The ones who did thought it sounded lame and by a no-name company that we've never heard of. So they thought it probably be buggy or unfinished, since they've had bad experiences with indie companies. Well, my friend was telling us all about Divinity and how awesome it was. Many of us got curious and looked it up, in return about 7 of us ended up buying it, the others thought it looked interesting, but they are more fps fans.
So, because my friend... the maker of Divinity 2 earned 50 dollars, from 7 people, that either didn't hear/know about it, or thought it was going to fail.
So, does piracy actually hurt sales and as bad as its made out to be? As well as, if my friend wasn't going to buy it anyway, since he can barely afford food/rent...they weren't going to earn his money either, since he doesn't have any to begin with. So did they actually lose a sale at all? When they weren't going to make one from him to begin with?
I myself don't pirate games, I usually go by what my group of friends goes by, since we have similar taste in games (minus FPS games, which I'm not a fan of). If they think its good, I would probably like it too. But what are your guys's opinions? I imagine this is a common thing that happens.
