I've said this before, but hey, maybe saying it again will create some interesting discussion.

The way I see it, the game wasn't ours to end. The game was Bioware's to end. Yes, I'm a fan of the idea that they released the extended footage to fill some holes, but I'm glad they didn't fill them all, and I'm glad they didn't radically alter their plot. Anyone can critcize a move after it happens, but the folks at Bioware had to come up with it before hand. They had to gamble, and they had to release it, and they had to stand by it. It was their game, their world, their story, and we were all only along for the ride. If we don't like the way it ended, well... the whole galaxy was about to come to an end. Who are we to be picky about its outcome?

I honestly think what's happened here is that they created such a great series that people put so much time and emotion into that they were taken off-guard. I didn't think Shepard was going to (possibly) die. Then again, I didn't always think Shepard was going to succeed, either. I sure didn't think Ashley would be stranded on a strange planet, but that's what happened. My heart went out to them, but... it wasn't my game to write.

Makes you wonder. The boy is the Catalyst, as far as I can tell, and I actually found it very interesting that, as it turns out, the Catalyst was interfering with Shepard's dreams. Did the Catalyst know Shepard would make it all along? Then again, when the Catalyst caught fire, what did that mean? Did the Catalyst not believe in Shepard?

It's another one of those interesting open-ended things, I think.

My initial impression is that if the thing keeping you from enjoying the game is choppy combat, the game may not be ideal for you in any event. There's nothing wrong with that, but the story captivated me so quickly in ME1 that I forgot all about how awkward combat was. Just a thought, before you commit to spending hours on it!

I'm torn on the "problems with the ending" idea. I just finished the game, went for a run to think about it, and you know what? It wasn't my game to decide. I will be contemplating all of the "loose holes" for a very long time. Did Shepard live? Does he find Ashley? Are people forever cut off from their home planets? What comes of Earth? What was the aftermath like? However, if Shepard does die, and I am Shepard, then I would never know these answers. If Shepard does live, maybe I can only guess. Nevertheless, this was not my world to dictate. It ended as it ended, and the rest is left up to me. I've never been more invested in a video game. It made me angry, sad, happy. It made me laugh, nearly cry, made my blood boil, and tested my mettle. Never have I waited so much for a game. Never have I thought so much about a game. Perhaps most importantly, never have I wanted more. The world was about to end, after all. Who am I to get picky on the outcome? I really thought the game absolutely ended, no matter what, with the Reapers winning. As it turns out, this isn't necessarily true. Makes you wonder a lot about the state of affairs in the game, and in the world. What more could I ask of a video game? I'll wonder what happened for a long time... but I'll never be sorry I'm left wondering.

I've got to say, I've just finished the game... and I don't see a huge problem with the original ending I received.

It's true. The more I work with wealthy colleagues (law school sort of sets you up for that sort of environment), the more I realize that there are those who flaunt it, and those who don't. I feel bad for those who flaunt it, because more often than not, they feel the need to do that in order to hide some insecurity. Those that don't flaunt it, if you saw them on the street, would look no different from the rest of those not as wealthy except for the fact that they could be driving Porsches instead of Kias if they wanted to. Most times, they don't, and while they enjoy their money, it's not something that dominates their livelihood. Two things though: a) maybe it's easier not to have it dominate your livelihood when you don't have to worry about it, and b) as already mentioned, there is a whole other stream of national/international pay inequality that clouds any discussion on relative wealth.

Everything in sports has both sides, it seems. The other side of the argument, when you watch the hit more slowly, is that Brown stuck out his knee at the last minute, and the subsequent lack of a call on that play led to a face-off in the Phoenix zone, which led to the goal. I've watched the hit about a dozen times now, and it's questionable. Ergo, with no real definite answer (it really is borderline, and could have gone either way), there's not a lot they could do to punish Brown.
