I'm not seeing Spanish as strong as people are saying. I think Italy and Germany are stronger with just their traditional strong defenses. Spain lost to USA 2 years ago. Yeah, I know the American team improved a lot but tradition is a thing that really matters in World Cups. The first world cup I have watched was Mexico 1986. We can only see 5 teams that reached the finals over all those years:
1986 - Argentina x Germany
1990 - Germany x Argentina
1994 - Brasil x Italy
1998 - France x Brasil
2002 - Brasil x Germany
2006 - Italy x France
Although England, Spain and France have good players, in my opinion they are always in disadvantage against Brasil, Argentina, Italy and Germany. Just because of tradition, not giving up to the emotions in critical times. Except France x Brasil, France totally owns Brasil. Looking at the last 6 World Cups, Brasil won 2 (94 and 02), lost 1 to argentina(90) and was elimitaded by France the other three times (86, 98, 06).
As a brazilian I see Brasil with a good team, although the press over here criticizes a lot our coach. If I have to put all my chips in a team, I'd choose Argentina, mostly for superstition. All the champions last years were playing mediocre football, a lot lower than the expected, but they got the trophy. I'd love to see a new champion, like Netherlands, Paraguai or an asian/concacaf/african team...
