Gaming in itself is not an addiction, it's a way for people to relax and marvel in their home entertainment systems and the different worlds games envelop one in. However, it can be very deadly if you do become addicted to it, just like alcohol.

Phalanxes and Spearmen both can be very good against swordsmen. However, it depends on the skill, and equipment of the respective units on both sides of the battle. The main advantage phalanx troops have is that they are virtually impregnable from the front whereas spearmen and swordsmen are not. However, this also poses a strong disadvantage, they are easily outmanuevered and you can exploit this weakness much how Paulus exploited the Antigonid line at the battle of Pydna.

I would strongly suggest you put down the piss-poor (in comparison) retail version of the game and download Rome Total Realism mod, it greatly expands on the campaign and makes the battles all the much more interesting.
