[QUOTE="tenaka2"]

Human nature has not changed because religious fundies will not allow it to.

tenaka2

Human nature won't change because humans are, deep down, violent, greedy animals. Our social and moral beliefs may change over time, but human nature will always remain the same. We're doomed to a future of power-grabs and death over petty arguments.

I choose to believe that people can learn. 200 years ago the U.S. thought having slaves was ok (and they were religious), I think people can learn and become more tolerant, women got the vote 100 years ago (and they were all religious), 60 years ago gay people began to get acceptance (most people were religious).

Society evolves, gets better over time. The western coounties that have abandoned religion are the best counties to live in.

I would hate to live in a fundie country where religion ruled. Where would you rather live? Its light and dark, religion is the dark. Mindstorms world is the dark.

It's as I said, our social and moral beliefs do change over time. Slavery and soon-to-be outlawing gay marriage are mostly just a social change when we come to realize that these are other people.

What I meant is, in a nutshell, humanity will become stand-offish and militant over just about any issue. Sure, we overcome some of our issues over time, but more issues just pop up over the centuries. At one time we were killing each other over salt, now it's oil. Religion has it's place in the dark seat of humanity's crimes, but I believe eventually we'll stop killing each other over it, whether through eradication of religion or when it's just collectively accepted that we can't be sure who is right or wrong, but what's to stop people from destroying each other over dissapearing supplies of who knows what in the future?

You yourself are against religion, and I've seen you get rather militant once or twice in the past. You believe that the best way past something is to eradicate it. Religion isn't the root of human nature, evolution is. Cavemen destroyed each other over food and resources well before spirituality were created, and it will be so in the future if we don't eradicate ourselves before that. Forcing religions to cooperate through force or realization is only a temporary peace, you know this.

And if you want the truth, tenaka, I'd rather live in a world with freedom to choose religion or non-religion over a world where I'm forced to believe that all religion is a lie. I've never really had a problem with Mindstorm because he seems to promote peace over force, even if the preaching gets a little annoying on occasion.

All three were written by sheep herders and redifined as fit the times.

Trying to live in modern day and worshiping books written with no knowledge of modern times is not a great way to live.

The times have changed but human nature has not.

Human nature has not changed because religious fundies will not allow it to.

Human nature won't change because humans are, deep down, violent, greedy animals. Our social and moral beliefs may change over time, but human nature will always remain the same. We're doomed to a future of power-grabs and death over petty arguments.

[QUOTE="mindstorm"]The Old Testament explains why humanity needs a savior. The New Testament tells who that savior is.lostrib

and the Book of Mormon is just awful, definitely the weakest of the trilogy

Are you kidding? I loved the play.

I landed dead center. Does that make me asexual?

On the plus side, I did get a perfect score on 3D shapes.

Well, any person who has a basic understanding of Scripture study should know that Jesus never invalidated the Old Testament. His claim was that he "changed" the way we follow the old laws by fulfilling some of them. "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." That's why Christians aren't required to do animal sacrifice or eat kosher. A good example is that Christ supposedly fulfilled moral law (the judgement of men by god and other men) by simply being a man who loves others, and doesn't judge based on superficial features of others. He loves all of mankind without exception, despite our many varying flaws, and we should follow his example and not judge others.

As Saint Paul said, "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet,"  and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law". It can be boiled down to, while the laws are still in effect, we can fulfill the commandments by simply loving our fellow man and paying our debts out of love and respect, no other reason.

Jesus basically became the fulfillment of many of the old Jewish was from the old testament. They are still in effect, but Christ became the thing they are fulfilled by. We no longer have to build temples in the Lord's honor as Jesus became his temple. We do not need to sacrfice animals in the name of God as Jesus became our ultimate sacrifice. Finally, his death on the cross pays the price for all crimes that were marked as worthy of death in the Old Testament. Things like homosexuality, adultery, etc. were no longer to be divinely punished as his death pays the divine toll for commiting them. Some people like to interpret this as meaning his death pays for all of our sins and we can get away with anything, but the truth behind this is that while they can be let into the kingdom of heaven, they are still criminals that need to punished on Earth for the crimes they commited. What this means in a nutshell is that crimes that are an upfront to God are forgiven, while crimes that are an upfront to humanity are not. If your crime hurts another man in some way, such as thievery or murder, you are not holding up your end of the Law by loving your fellow man, and until your pay for your crimes, you no longer hold favor.

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor effeminate nor homosexual nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."

I will just leave this here: Home Depot drops part-timers health benefits, sends workers to exchanges. Trader Joe's did the same thing recently too. More are to follow from the sounds of things.

WhiteKnight77

You know, back in May, they cut my hours from 8 to 5 a day. and would flip shit when we worked more than 30 hours a week, because of Obamacare. They didn't want to provide their temp or part-timers with benefits based on hours worked.

[QUOTE="Person0"][QUOTE="JML897"]If they're so confident that Obamacare is going to be a massive failure then why won't they let it be implemented and then get a bunch of landslide Republican victories over the next few years? Mikey132

Opposing it gets those big lobbyist dollars an it bumps up their conservative credibility. Most republicans have already been lied to so much about obamacare they won't care what it actually does they'll just hate it. The congressmen just need to appeal to the far right people to win reelection so that's what they're doing.

Funny how Canada can have such a sound Health Care system, and a country like the U.S can't.

I always figured a country with such power would try to take care of it's own people before trying to take over the world.  Live and learn I guess...

A single-payer system has it's own share of problems, you know. While I'm not a huge fan of the American system, at least I can get quality care quickly.

[QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]TV shows/movies & drinking & other somewhat mundane things I'm not sure I'd consider "hobbies" like someone on the first page said. The gym and martial arts which I'm starting up again after 3+ months of not doing them. Skydiving, bungy jumping, quad biking and jet skiiing are things I did for the first time recently and would do again given the chance.cain006

Why is reading considered an okay hobby, but watching TV or movies isn't?

Because reading has been around for thousands of years, where as there are still people alive today that outdate moving pictures. It hasn't sank in as a hobby to everyone yet.
