It's the end of September and the games come thick and fast!

I've justed posted my latest reviews on my Gamespot profile...there's about 70 on there now.

Anno 1701 (DS)
Settlers (DS)
Twin Worlds (X360)
Mario Party 8 (Wii)
Heavenly Sword (PS3)

...I've still got to start/finish writing reviews for Stranglehold, Halo 3, Stuntman Ignition, and Medal of Honor Airborne....now I just need the time to do it.

What I have been playing this week:

Stranglehold (X360)- I like it

Halo 3 - boring SP, amazing MP

Dungeons and Dragons Tactics (PSP) - i'm liking it.

Anno 1701 (DS) - still can't put it down

Ragnarawk

Ragnarawk is described as a "Guitar-PG" and has just won a respected new orginal games competition in the UK.

Ragnarawk

The magical guitar is infused with the soul of a rock-god

Now this is a game that must come to XBLA - it looks absolutely brillaint. :D

Crazy Autumn Release Schedule

I have been saving my pennies and I have now finalised my pre-orders for the crazy autumn release schedule. It works out at one game per week, which I should just be able to afford with my warchest. :)

Locust stole my hamster!

I got pretty angry on Sunday night when an update to Gears of War lost all my Gears game data, including my progress on Insane, all the tags I found, and all the online achievement progress.

Thanks Epic!!

July's been a good month for gaming

DiRT: I'm not a huge fan, but I completed the career mode and syphoned off those precious achievement points. I often watch my wife playing DiRT and admire the graphics - it is just a shame the physics model is so wishy-washy.

Overlord: I really love this game, but it is starting to get a bit repetitive. I am having a little rest and then I'll be back for more mayhem.

Bomberman Live: Totally brilliant game. I played this to death for the first few days it was out. One of my favourite arcade titles and great fun online.

Carcasonne: Yep, I still love playing with tiles.

Catan: My achievements are junked, but I still enjoy a game or two.

Super StarDust HD: Brilliant update on the Geometry Wars genre - the planet based play area and co-op make this my favourite game on the PS3

Rainbow Six Vegas: The free maps meant that Vegas got an airing. Still, for my money, the best shooter of last year.

The good, the bad and the ugly

The good:

  • Die Hard 4.0 - stupid but fun :)
  • Puzzle League (DS) - funky little game
  • Marvel Trading Card game (PSP) - decent TCG
  • Sim City (DS) - I love it
  • Carcassone - I love it even more
  • Overlord - Its good to be bad

The bad:

  • Call of Juarez - what a complete let down

and the ugly:

  • Mass Effect getting delayed again - arrrggg!

Forza Motorsport 2

It is rare that a game is released that I can find no fault with, but Forza Motorsport 2 is a almost perfect driving game. As a result it has eaten up much of my gaming time over the last couple of weeks. (see my review below). I have become addicted to the Forza paint shop; developing a line of game platform related cars - from Spectrums to Playstations.

DiRT finally arrived on my doormat last weekend too. It is a shame that the publishes decided to release these games so close together. It would seem to harm DiRT more than Forza as the weaknesses of DiRT (dodgy car physics) are highlighted by the brilliant physics of Forza.

I don't really understand the logic behind some of the release dates that publishers commit to. It would have been better to perhaps hold DiRT for a couple of weeks to let driving fans get Forza out of their system first.

20,000 points under the sea...

Well last weekend I hit a gamerscore milestone of 20,000 lovely points. I carefully engineered it to land exactly on 20,000 thanks to some points from NBA Live and Mad Tracks.

I am now taking a break from points collection for a while, and I will play each game the way I want to and not worry about failing to get any achievements.

Games I played this week include, Guitar Hero 2 (X360), God of War 2 (PS2), NBA Live 06 (X360), Mad Tracks (X360), Crush (PSP) and Puzzle Quest (DS).

Update 1.8 and more...

Well I applied update 1.8 today -the second since I bought the PS3 last month- and I have tested some of the new features.

The DVD, PS1 and PS2 upscaling is very good. I tested a DVD (Columbo), PS1 game (Grand Turismo) and PS2 game (Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance). BG:DA Looked amazing, you'd hardly believe it is a 5 year old PS2 game!

The PSP update that will allow me to access my PS3 content from anywhere in the world via WiFi broadband should be available this week, and that will be interesting to try.

The new PS3 Media Server connection seems to work well as well. It is the same mechanism as the X360 Media Centre connection.

The next big update, 2.0, is not far away now either. Update 2.0 should be really good: it will allow the XMB (Cross Media Bar) -like the X360 blade- to be accessed in game bringing it inline with the X360.

Stupid as Sony have been, they are catching up fast...

... we just need some chuffing games now please!

Games I have been playing this week: Puzzle Quest (DS), Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance (PS2), KOTR (Xbox), Blazing Angles (X360), MotorStorm (PS3) and Rush'n Attack (X360)...

May Review Round-up

I've added some reviews on my first batch of PS3 games, with Motorstorm to come soon. Early impressions of the "PS3 experience" are very favourable: it is an excellent platform and games like Motorstorm showcase its potential. See the bottom of this page for my latest reviews...

XBLA is picking up with some great looking titles on the horizon, like Carcassonne and Mad Tracks.  I must say I am more excited about some of the XBLA titles in the pipeline than I am about Halo 3 or GTA IV.
