If he likes zombie games then he will probably love Dead Space, which can be purchased new for $20 (or was that price when I bought it at Best Buy). This was the first game I got after I bought my second PS3 (long story) and it's one of the best I've ever played. The controls are so ideal that I never once died because the controls didn't do what I intended. It also has quite a few trophies, and cheap downloadable content (armor and weapon skins/upgrades).

I've seen Demon's Souls at Best Buy (finally) and if he likes action RPGs then Demon's Souls is a must buy. I have almost 200 hours on it. People have been going nuts over this game.

The other thing you can do is get him a $50 Playstation Network card. There are plenty of downloadable demos which can then be purchased and downloaded as full games online. I just bought Fat Princess online and I've been playing it all day. It's like football + capture the flag (where the football and the flag are a princess that you feed cake to make her gigantic and hard for the enemy team to carry) + medieval combat with up to 32 players at once, and every time I try to get into a game, there have always been full teams. I didn't think I'd like the game at first, but then I tried the demo and it sold me.

Uncharted 2 is also mega-hot and if he remotely likes shooters (I would say FPS but it isn't in first person) then it's a must have. The multiplayer alone is worth the game but it's just loaded with amazing graphics and adventure. It also has co-op multiplayer which is great if you're not in a competitive mood.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the obvious PS3 exclusives that might also be considered a must have, depending on whether the previous titles in the series were played.

It's hard to go wrong if you look at the reviews and browse through the top rated games. I have so much fun on my PS3 that I have to take breaks from having fun.

You really do need to do extensive research on any game you're going to buy unless you're willing and ready to accept the possibility of disappointment. My perspective on Demon's Souls is a little skewed because I've been waiting a week and a half longer than I intended to play it--so I feel like anyone that owns it is frolicking in a land of paradise that I can't get into (pre-order was useless to me because I didn't know when I'd be able to afford a PS3, but I was able to get one two days before the game's release). But I think if you take a look at the Demon's Souls Wiki, and watch several of the YouTube videos, you get an idea of what you're getting into. I can see how other players' videos could make the game look easier than it is; I guess you can either give up or just keep trying, watch how other players succeed in their videos and mimic them, and think about how amazing of a gamer you'll be when you start making progress. :) The punishment is severe, but the rewards are beyond all easier games. This isn't just a difficult game--it's a chance for you to transform as a player.

I ordered my copy from Amazon and it should be arriving tomorrow. I highly anticipate being able to relate to your woes!

I don't think hype can ruin a game. I think some have such a strong desire for an upcoming game to be almost exactly similar to a previous title, there's some inflexibility to accepting differences which aren't necessarily bad. GTA4 is much darker than the previous games. It has more of a life-sim focus. It doesn't have the variety of mission activities that the previous games did, like racing the RC vehicles. But the previous games don't have the level of detail and intricacy that GTA4 has. You can't sit down and watch TV, surf the internet, date women you meet online, be judged on your appearance, bowl, play pool, shoot darts, get drunk, develop friendships and unlock special services that aid in the game, and there is no multiplayer on previous GTA console titles. The gunfights and fistfights in GTA4 are more intricate as well, and you can play through the game twice and make different plot choices. So it isn't that the game was overhyped. It delivered, it just didn't deliver in the way that some people wanted it to. The real issue is how far people feel a franchise is allowed to deviate or incorporate newness, which is where we see the controversy over other famous series like Final Fantasy. I like FFX-2, but others can't stand it. I love FF12, but others don't like it. In the end, the more you can embrace the differences while still recognizing quality, the more you will get out of gaming.

God damnit, now I wish they had put that original theme in MGS4.

And on a more serious note, this.

Scianix-Black

I always admired how ambitious the composers were when they only had an 8-bit machine to work with. Decades later, the music is still so distinctive and beautiful.

I hope everyone has read the blogger from the official 360 UK mag. That is actually a way more telling article, just for the fact that an Xbot wrote it, praised, and gave it much respect. The comments for the article are also quite hilarious, in that all these Xbots are groaning that the KZ2 hype and praise machine has finally penetrated an 360 publication. http://blog.360magazine.co.uk/uncategorized/competition-check-killzone-edition/ The sheer consistency of the praise for this game so far is kinda convincing me this is more than just hype and marketing, folks.beekayjay

Great link! Thanks for posting that. This is an amazing time in gaming.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing this! One of the most memorable themes in gaming. Here's my top five gaming soundtracks, just really quickly: 1. MGS3.....seriously, the Snake Eater theme song is absolutely godly. 2. WipeOut XL soundtrack....worldclass techno DJs contributed to it. Awesome. 3. Silent Hill 4: The Room....ok I wouldn't listen to it while driving to work, but considering the game it was in, you gotta admit, damn good soundtrack. 4. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven...love the Japanese traditional instrumentation with a modern twist 5. Mirrors Edge....just for that bloody infectious and addictive song. Get out of my head!!!beekayjay

Great top 5, especially considering I haven't heard WipeOut XL or Silent Hill 4... you're gonna make me go back to my PS2 wishlist. But yes, Snake Eater is an incredible song. Remember during the game when Snake is climbing that ultra-long ladder and the Snake Eater song echoes in the distance? That still gives me chills! We are so fortunate to have existed during these times. You know, in all of the earth's existance, or even over the last 2000 years, no one has had the chance to experience anything like the Metal Gear Solid series until the last two decades? Talk about hitting the jackpot for being born.
