If I was to make a prediction for Nintendo's showing tomorrow..

The intentionally vague game lineup would be something like this:

  • New Mario Game for WiiU (maybe connection with 3DS Mario?)
  • Pikmin 3 unveil
  • Wii Sports is to Wii as (new title announced here) is to WiiU (casual appeal, tech demo showing off controller and system capabilities)
  • Third Party exclusive unveil (even if its just some dance game)
  • At least one third party multiplat being shown to highlight the WiiU's unique capabilities, Aliens Colonial Marines or maybe something from Ubisoft?
  • At least one new game teased either through a teaser trailer or mixed in with a larger gameplay/trailer montage.

Beginning of the end?

I'm beginning to realise gaming just doesn't really do it for me anymore as it once does. I think I'm personally growing out of it, but don't take that as a condescending comment towards the hobby; I just think it's something I'm ready to move on from.

I've been coming to terms with this for a while but I think I'm finally ready to admit it: I'm just not much of a gamer anymore. Before gaming was something I would specifically make time for; I'd plan one day off a week that I could just laze around and play games, something like that. Now gaming is more so just something I do to fill in time when I'm bored. I always thought this to be the difference between casual gaming and hardcore gaming, so by my own definition I'm flirting with casualville.

Most of my gaming time as of recently has been with quick pick up and play arcade titles such as Super Star Dust HD or Pacman. I once loved the very deep games that are an investment and take some work to get a higher level of satisfaction in the end, but I don't feel I have the time or patience for this anymore. I'm playing Demon's Souls right now, and I really like it. But I don't have time to replay the same levels over and over again because of the difficulty level. So I find myself reluctant to pick up the controller when I know in the one hour I have to play I might not accomplish a single thing.

I want something that I can get in to quickly, find some enjoyment and pleasure and get out. I guess my analogy would be that I once saw gaming as a relationship but now all I want is a casual hookup/one night stand once in a while.

All this said, all is not lost. I'm not retiring. There's still some games out there that I am looking forward to and I'm sure I'll enjoy immensely. Zelda is something I've been looking forward to for quite some time. Xenoblade is another if I ever have the chance to import. I'll probably dig in to Elder Scrolls V and a few others this year. I'm just no longer at the point where if I don't turn on my Wii or PS3 for a few weeks that I get all bent out of shape (and maybe suggest one of those companies has betrayed me in true system wars fashion). I still care about gaming but I think I've reprioritized as to where it fits in to my life as a whole.

It's like Noah's Ark if there was no Ark and all the animals drowned.

..And all the animals were infact Nintendo 64 games.

So there's been a lot of rain at home and my dad's basement got flooded. That sucks in itself, however insurance is covering pretty much everything.

HOWEVER. My Nintendo 64 collection was in the basement. The games all made it because they were in plastic bags/cases, but all my manuals and boxes did not, and manuals and boxes are not covered (which makes sense but still a downer). Since I'm kind of an obsessive collector who's a stickler about keeping things in good shape and complete, this is no good. So luckily I still have all my games but their collector's worth to be has been hit severly.

So now I'm not sure what to do, because it would be awfully hard to find replacements on ebay, and I cccould just buy all the complete games over again, but I'd certainly have a hard time justifying it to myself to not only rebuying games that I already still own, but also buying games that I've already bought and beaten, and will essentially just go back into storage.

One game didn't make it, which was Paper Mario. So I got a write-off from one "Nintendo game", which will probably be a new Wii game. Sucks I no longer have the original though.

Oh, and the one game that happened to not be on the ground where the water was... Pokemon Stadium. Fantastic.

I don't mean to make a huge deal out of this though, because it's not. A lot of people at home lost a lot more than boxes and manuals to their old video games. But I figured this might be an appropriate place to rant.

It's over 1000!!!

Haven't updated this in a llllong time. Maybe I should start blogging at a more reliable frequency.

On the other hand, I have met one of my life goals, which is to join the "1000lbs club" for my weight lifting. This is when you combine the maximum lifts for bench press, deadlift and squat, and it is equal to or more than 1000 lbs.

Here's my lifts, at 160 lbs:

  • Bench: 295 lbs
  • Deadlift: 390 lbs
  • Squat: 315 lbs (note I didn't want to try a one rep max on this due to knee concerns, did this for 5 reps; estimated one-rep would probably be around 350 or so)

Success! Next milestone: Triple plates (315 lbs) on bench press. Here we go.

2010 Top 10 anticipated games

It's 2010, and I'd like to do a "Top 10 games of 2009", but really I haven't played enough games in 2009 to make a decent list at all. So here's to looking into the future!

  1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  2. Metroid: Other M
  3. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
  4. Dragon Quest IX
  5. Darksiders
  6. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  7. Pokemon Soul Silver/ Heart Gold
  8. Infinite Space
  9. The Last Guardian
  10. Final Fantasy XIII

Honourable mentions:

  • Bayonetta
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
  • Tales of Graces
  • Sin & Punishment 2
  • Golden Sun 3

I'd put a little explanation for each but for the majority of them the explanation would be "I really loved the past games in the series so I'm looking forward to the sequel". A lot of the honourable mentions would have made it on the main list if I knew more about them (Castlevania and Golden Sun for example). You'll notice Final Fantasy XIII is lowest on the list, beaten out by 4 other RPGs, on handhelds even. I'm really cautious about Final Fantasy XIII, and to be honest I don't like the direction it's going with its linearity and cinematic focus; but nonetheless it will more than likely be one of the top RPGs of the year so I'm just really really hoping I'll end up liking it.

Well, so long Final Fantasy XII, hello Digital Devil Saga.

I really tried to fall in love with Final Fantasy XII, I really did. I put in 40 hours, but enough is enough. It's just not doing it for me. And I got a whole boat load of other RPGs that are waiting in line!

So here's Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. I'm only about an hour or two in, but the game is already more interesting and more has happened in these two hours than the whole 40 hours I've put into Final Fantasy XII.

You win this round Atlus.

Well internet, please allow me to introduce myself

If you're reading this, you're probably wondering "Who really is this handsome devil?"

  10. I'm so tough that one time a bee stung me and within seconds it died.

85 Dollar Repair for the Wii, Eh?

Bold strategy, Nintendo. But I'll see your "85 dollar repair fee" and up you "I'll just start buying games for PS3 and Xbox 360". Your move.

I hear Valkyrie Chronicles is pretty good, I think that will be first on my list.
