Ever since i heard the news, i haven't had the urge to watch wrestling at all. None, until i finally forced myself to watch Eddie vs. Super Crazy from RoH: The Era of Honor Begins. While the match wasn't all that great (***, IMO), it's good to know that all i have to do is pop in that show or a myriad of other shows/DVDs anytime i want to see him again.
I think it's safe to say that i've had enough time to fully digest this whole tragedy. Eddie Guerrero was one of my top 5 favorite wrestlers in the WWE today, as well as one of my top 10 favorites of all time. For the past few days, i've been a walking talking vacuum. I've barely talked to any of my friends. I've barely talked to anyone, period. The fact that a Pro-Wrestler/TV Character has made that much of an impression in my life is a true testament to his talent.
I'll admit, Eddie didn't really catch my attention up until 2000 when he jumped over to the E, mostly because i followed the E product more after 1996, believe it or not. When he debuted the whole Latino Heat gimmick, he immediately connected with me. The music was great, the angle with Chyna was great, his promos and catch phrases were great. I became the "Eddie Guerrero" of my little geeky group of wrestling buddies back then, as i'd constantly say "Ese", "Mamacita", "You want some Latino Heat?", and recite the theme song. My top 5 favorite Eddie matches would have to be Eddie vs. Mysterio - WCW HH 97, Eddie vs. Chris Benoit - Vengeance 03, Eddie vs. Dean Malenko - ECW 1995, Eddie vs. Edge - Smackdown, Fall 2002, and Eddie vs. Kurt Angle - WM XX.
I will definitely be picking up the new Eddie tribute shirt. Not only because all proceeds are going to the Guerrero family, but the fact that it's just a great shirt!
In closing, i was really moved by the RAW tribute. Fortunately, i got all my crying out the night before. However, i was extremely depressed throughout the entire show. I'm still slightly depressed as i type this. The tribute was so well done. It exceeded all my expectations, tenfold. Benoit, Batista, Chavo, and Mysterio breaking down like that was intense, to say the least. I could mention how momentarily annoyed i was by the fact that HHH and Stephanie talked after Benoit, etc., but the positives clearly outweighed that little negative. I still haven't come to grips with the fact that he's gone. However, i had an epiphany the other day - Eddie might be gone, but he didn't go with any regrets, whatsoever. It's not like we can really say "He could've been one of the all time greats, he had everything going for him", etc. The fact is, Eddie DID live up to his potential. He lived up to everything and then some. I mean, look at Jake Roberts or Barry Windham.... need i say more? The man, IMO, is a pioneer of pro-wrestling in that his story will no doubt inspire many future stars within the business to overcome their personal demons and live up to their potential.
Goodbye, Eddie. I will miss you quite alot. On this earth, you inspired me greatly. Your death has only inspired me more, onehundredfold. It's a shame that i'll never see your Frog splash again. It's a shame that i'll never see the Los Guerreros reunion i was waiting for. It's a shame that a second run with the World title didn't materialize in time. It's a shame that i'll never see your antics on television ever again. You've left quite a vacuum, Eddie. Not just on the Smackdown roster, but in all of our collective hearts. In closing, all i have to say is thank you for helping me get through my Freshman year of college last year. In your last years, you displayed a fortitude that eludes many people throughout their entire life. Had i not been privy to your struggle with vices and success in overcoming them, i might not be where i am today. Thank you for entertaining me and being a performer that truly gave pro-wrestling a better name.
I'm sure you've reunited with the Love Machine and your father by now. I'd imagine you're putting on classics with the likes of Kerry Von Erich and Owen Hart as we speak. In fact, i'd say the first card you wrestled on in heaven looked something like this:
Bruiser Brody vs. Andre The Giant.
Buddy Rogers vs. Lou Thesz.
Gory Guerrero, Eddie Guerrero, and Art Barr vs. Fritz, Kerry, and David Von Erich.
Jumbo Tsuruta and Giant Baba vs. Owent Hart and Davey Boy Smith.
Terry Gordy vs. Ray Stevens.
Adrian Adonis and Rick Rude vs. Curt Henning and Eddie Gilbert.
:)
RIP.
