Because the way they died was not pleasent. Being stoned to death, Baked alive, Crucified upside down, And they could have chosen to live by denying Christ, But they didn't because they knew it was true. Even if they renounced Jesus, they still would have committed the crime while he was living. And as far as I'm concerned they were preaching a false idol, and cruel as it seems today that was the accepted punishment back then for such types of offenses. The legions at guard 24/7 isn't entirely a proven fact. What is a proven fact is the Romans would desecrate a body of an enemy of the state. It's perfectly logical to expect one of his closest followers or group of to take the body at night so that wouldn't happen. The "Resurrection" just added to his power/mystique.
