Agreed with this. Seems like way too many people assume the first is also supposed to be comical even though Raimi and Campbell tried to make it as scary as possible. Which is pretty annoying. A lot of people dismiss the original too because they think 2 is a full remake. Pretty silly.
I shall purchase. Everybody keeps telling me how amazing it is. I finally get to check it out for myself.

There is a lot of nostalgia around aoe2, you have been warned. Not for me at least. I still play it every now and then, that's after playing pretty much every good RTS this gen. The only problem I have is non-customizable hotkeys. Same. Last time I played it was early last year. Still holds up extremely well.
