I suppose I was making the point that good games often become great games when viewed through the lens of history. How many games can we say we enjoyed when they were released, but say 10-15 years later, we realize that in a historical context, that they were part of a small group of games that truly defined a genre, or a console, or an era of gaming?
I'd think that would be more relative to "classics" than the "best games ever".
The whole point of evaluating a game at the time of it's release is to determine it's quality at the time of release.
If this were a discussion of classics, I would agree with you.
Right, and Dark Souls, by critical standards, was reviewed as a very good game at the time of release, right? I'm simply pointing out that it may not still be viewed as a good game in 5 or 10 years, however, most of the games on that list have stood the test of time and manage to maintain their status as good (some, even great) games.
