My guess is that before facebook got hold of it that it was going to be 350-450 bucks, then they bought it and jacked the price up. It's either that or the boss of the Oculus had no idea what his own products were worth.

For VR to ever become mainstream the price will have to drop. I can't see loads of people going out to buy a device that most of them will have no familiarity with. I consider myself a tech enthusiast (not the kind that loves to buy a new 700 dollar phone each year). I like to see the newest devices and advancing current devices, particularly in computer graphics. But I just couldn't bring myself to drop 600 bucks on a device that may see very little development and support for it's software in the future.

Hopefully it'll be like Blu-ray and become huge and have a massive drop in price. But also as we've seen in the not so distant past that a too high price point can completely kill a new device, i.e the Google Glass.

Only time will tell if VR will be the next great advance for entertainment.

@Sushiglutton: There's a difference in what the hardware may cost and what the device will actually be worth to anyone. Plus before one of the guys involved with Oculus was saying before that it may be something like 350 dollars.

My main problem was the way he said it "obscenely cheap" I mean come on. He should have said something like "it's as cheap as we can sell and still produce them"

Wow could he make a more condescending comment. Maybe to this dude who could wipe with 100 bills but to your average joe it's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

Besides, what's the point in saying that even if it is true? Is that supposed to make us feel better?

@pmb_denton : You really think strapping a phone to your head will give you the same experience? Really?

I think the price is too much for sure, but on a side note, you know what's kind of sad? That people think this is too much to pay for a new piece of tech like this but then go wait in line to pick up the next 700 dollar iPhone each year.

Thus the Oculus died before it truly lived.

In sales/success it may be a benchmark but in the realm of innovation it really hasn't done much. Don't get me wrong I like my PS4, but all it did was make par and attempt nothing else. I rather hope it's not a benchmark they start using, cuz if so we'll see some decent but stale consoles down the road.

As much as I want VR to become a major practical thing in gaming, I doubt that it will. I mean really 1.9 million in the first year? my guess is that they're going to go the way of 3D TVs and Google Glasses.

I really hope I'm wrong though.
