If we have to pad out a Thief game with explosions and action sequences because its the only way to sell the game and make it supposedly marketable then yes AAA games are in hot water.
Everyone is so quick to praise this game but all of these ideas really should have been put in last year's game. They took the easy way out by just making it a straight shooter. I also don't get the hype about Lara's character, particularly in this reboot. She shrieks and gasps and that's all. She has no personality.
I'm not writing the sequel off but I'd be surprised if they add too much given their sales weren't met very well last time. It'll prompt them to be conservative in design.
@NTM23 @biggest_loser At least wait for a sale. They're still ripping you off at that price when you can get the "standard" edition for a lot cheaper. Are the graphics that important?
Also, do you play any games on PC at all? TR only requires 1GB of RAM and a DX9 card.
"If you've already played through Tomb Raider on an older console, there's little incentive to jump in again."
So why should they get away with charging $60 again? Most people would have already played this and if they haven't they can get it a lot cheaper on Steam with what might be an even better version than this one. Isn't that worth mentioning?
@moey94 Its like the Call of Duty syndrome: adding more gunfights and explosions just for the sake of being bombastic. GTAV, Tomb Raider and Infinite are guilty of that.
@shingui5 @hotdiddykong No you're right. Playing it on Hard makes it feel like a proper survival game since you can die in just a few shots. Its incredibly tense that way.
@Grenadeh @DepressiveMan "It's clearly not intended to stand on its own in the long term, and the characterizations it establishes may work better when more pieces fall into place." What else do you want her to say?
When will gamers take responsibility for their own actions too though?
In the last few days the community manager of a Kickstarter, Mega Man-like game, Dina Abou Karam, has been stalked and people have demanded that she be fired from the project, largely because she's a feminist.
Its one thing to blame people on the outside but this sort of behaviour, which Gamespot's community is also not excused from, are equally as damaging to the image of gamers too and does little to dispel the false assumption that games are for bored losers.
What also has to be stressed is that our own actions will change not only how we are received as an industry but the types of games that are made. If you want intelligent projects, start acting like it. Respect has to be earned.
