Well that particular study was quite poor yes but in general I think that religion garners morality. That being said it's a huge misstep to infer that the doctrine behind that religion is true because of this. blackregiment
I think religion can tend to defy many societal moral norms, rather than garner them. To me, this is the difference between legal systems and inflexible religious morals.
It is funny how you atheists always try to lump all faiths into a broad grouping called religion as if they were all equal. It is also funny how you refer to "societal norms" as if majority opinion determines morality. That type of thinking leads to Holocausts, the murder of innocent unborn human beings and euthanasia.
Western civilization was founded on many Judeo Christian principles, one being the sanctity of life. The corruption infused by secular humanism has birthed the horrors of abortion, euthanasia, and the decline in morality in our culture.
For a start, there is no group of atheists, so you probably won't have noticed the irony and hypocrisy of your first sentence.

How silly. Atheists believe that God does not exist. Are you suggesting that this is not a common denominator among atheists? Are you suggesting that some atheists believe that a 1/4 god exists, or 2/3 of a god exists? On the other hand, there are many different religions, a clear distinction. No, my statement is neither ironic nor hypocritical, it just shows a lack of understanding on your part as well as a need to dig deep tocover your error of lumping all religions together.
law informs morality. Law is changed through cultural evolution, which can include majority decisions and individual actions. That type of thinking leads to democracy and freedom from oppression.
Western civilization was founded on pre-Christian principles - the primary one being the collective need for survival.

No, our laws are based on Judeo Christian moral principles. You can dispute that if you wish, but the vast majority of scholars, including secular ones disagree with you on that. Recorded history does as well.
Thanks to secular humanism, we don't get the inquisitions, witch burning, slavery, tithing, unwanted pregnancies and bans on contraception that religious populations have enforced.

How funny. Would you like to compare death tolls that resulted from secular humanist thought to those of people, mainly the Roman Catholic Church which is not Biblical Christianity, who claimed to be acting on behalf of God?
We can start with Mao and Stalin, well over 100,000.000 deaths from those two atheists alone. How about the millions of innocent babies that have been murdered in the name of convenience through the genocide called abortion? You seem to support baby murdering, am I correct in that? There's some nice atheist "morality" right there.
not just that a lot of crime today are made by atheists too. like high school shoot outs, robbing and killing. a lot of gangs too.
