Sony and MS have already announced new products for the current generation systems. Natal and the wand sticks. By the time Natal comes out, the 360 will be 5 years old. I doubt they would release these contrllers and then a year later would announce new systems. Plus, they always announce new systems a year or more before they actually come out. No one has announced anything, so I would say that the 360 might be at the halfway mark or just passed it, and the PS3 is still almost brand new.
Developers are already complaining how expensive games are to make and are multiplatforming. Sony is going digital like mad and did not release the PSP 2. The DS has been out for 5 years and only upgraded slightly.
You also forget that when the older systems came out, they were already somewhat dated hardware wise. The NES was supposed to be 16 bit but it was too expensive back then. 16 bit games were in arcades in 1987. 8 bit games were being made since 1981. We have had 128 bit games since what 97 or 98?
This generation was almost top of the line when it first came out and that is why it is taking so long for things to drop in price. We have pretty much maxed out hardware for a good bit. With the ability to do DLC and patches, we do not need as many games or systems as before.
developers are just now getting a good grasp of the Wii and PS3, I do not think anyone will release a new system anytime soon. Maybe in 4 to5 years or more, but not in the near future. Honestly I don't care. I would rather have systems last longer than before. We have everything we need with these systems, what more could you want? There are not enough games that take full advantage of the controllers and user created content etc.
