Tribute to One of my Heroes: The Star Called Sun

Viktor Tsoi

20 years ago, Viktor Tsoi, leader of Russia's greatest rock group, Kino, died in a car accident at age 28. His music is characterized by the simplicity of new wave/post-punk/reggae as well as having the lyrical tradition of Russian bards. His music got me through a very difficult time in my life and has since influenced the way I write songs. His lyrics deal with freedom and life, things everyone can relate to.

In honor of him, I recorded a cover ofthe title trackfrom his second to last album, 1989'sThe Star Called Sun.

Please enjoy, even if you don't understand Russian. Look up a translation of the lyrics. There aren't any songwriters of his caliber left in either Russia or the west.

O Well, wherever, wherever you are. Iron Maiden gonna get you no matter how far!

One of my dreams came true on July 12th: I got to see Iron Maiden live at Madison Square Garden. Of course seeing Dream Theater open for them was awesome in its own right. Both bands gave an incredible show. I was on the floor very close to the band. It is a surreal experience to see your musical heroes performing some of your favorite songs of all time right in front of you. If you're interested, just note that on this tour Maiden played mostly stuff from Brave New World, Dance of Death and A Matter of Life and Death as well as 5 classic songs. Seeing Eddie, in alien form, walk on stage during their self-titled song was one of the highlights.

Here are the set lists:

Dream Theater:

As I Am

A Rite Of Passage

Home

Panic Attack

Constant Motion

Pull Me Under

Iron Maiden:

The Wicker Man
Ghost of the Navigator
Wrathchild
El Dorado (new song)
Dance of Death
The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
These Colors Don't Run
Blood Brothers
Wildest Dreams
No More Lies
Brave New World
Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden

ENCORE
The Number of the Beast
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Running Free

I know the feeling. This is the Real Thing... The Essence of the Truth!

I saw Faith No More perform on 7/5/10 and they were amazing. The show was at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn. It's a small park by the river and you can see the city skyline across the water. The sunset was really beautiful. There were a few thousand people there, mostly between ages 18-35. Of course the temperature was close to 100 degrees and everyone was sweating like crazy. They had some avant-garde Jazz band open for them as well as this really obnoxious stand-up comedian. The band line-up was essentially the same as the one for their last studio album, Album of the Year. They were tight instrumentally and played a bunch of their best songs, including several from before the Mike Patton-era. Mike's voice is still amazing and I feel that this was probably the best concert I've ever been to. If you get the chance, go see them live. They're funny and ridiculously talented.

Here's the set list:

Main set:

Midnight Cowboy
The Real Thing
Be Aggressive
Land of Sunshine
The Crab Song
The Gentle Art of Making Enemies
Last Cup of Sorrow
Chinese Arithmetic (w/ Rahzel)
Easy (cover)
Midlife Crisis
Digging the Grave
Ashes to Ashes
Ben/Edge (cover)
King for a Day
Epic
Just a Man

Encore:

I Started a Joke (cover)
Worm
We Care a Lot (w/ Rahzel)

2nd Encore:

Stripsearch

I'll leave you with a clip from the show of them performing one of the first songs I heard by FNM and it's still one of my favorites, Midlife Crisis.

Mike's F'd Up Journey turns 3 years old today!

Mike's F'd Up Journey is 3!

On June 30th, 2007, one man decided to stop pretending to be a musician and start being one for real. Teaching himself riffs and solos by listening to hours upon hours of cla$$ic rock, punk and heavy metal, this man began building a library of music he could call his own. With nothing but a guitar, bass and a computer filled with drum samples, he set out to express himself through music. 3 years and 4.5 albums later, the Journey continues.

Despite some setbacks along the way, the music keeps coming and I want to thank all of the people who have supported me along the way, many of which are my gamespot friends. I don't do this for money or fame or anything. I just record music because I like experimenting with sound and expressing myself through it. I know I'm not a virtuoso, but that was never the point. I've always kept my music honest, even if it was in abstract or surreal form.

This summer I'll be recording more songs for my 5th LP, "Dead Falcon Rising". So far I've recorded: I Ain't Dead Yet, I Don't Need a Thing ('Cuz I'm Numb to the World), Nightmare before Dawn, Sugar in the Raw & Love is a Riot.

Peace and love be with you all.
