buft Blog

youre the boss now whats your attack pattern

If you read my Blog on a regular basis or even if you happened to stumble across my profile sometime just before the new year you may have read a blog in which I covered my plans to build a single screen 2d platformer much in the same vain as bubble bobble .

Unfortunately due to my Graphics card in my PC being rubbish and breaking (at least I think it's broke it may just be really bad) the plan had to be put on hold indefinitely.

However I am still working on the theory behind the game and designing the levels and game play for when I can afford to buy a bigger and better PC. One part of the design process troubles me and its designing the boss fights, so I want to do a little challenge on my blog here and maybe get some ideas for my project. Cooperation is better than straight up larceny right? :P

Anyway so I pose this question to you the reader.

If you where a boss in a 2d platformer what would be your attack pattern, name and what would you look like?

A little example, my nickname is Buft so I guess I would stick with that name, I'm obsessed with ye old adventure games and mages so I guess I would be a Mage, the pointy hat, big sleeves and a dress kind.

My special powers would be fireballs high, middle and low alternatively and every so often I would burst out a massive AOE flame which my unlucky opponent would have to jump over to avoid being killed. When I am close to death I would break my regular pattern and teleport around the screen firing off pot shot fireballs which go straight for the player and explode into a high pillar of fire.

Below is a crudely drawn and time saving stick figure representation of the abilities :P

rubbish times saving picture as advertised above

Feel free to send me pics and stuff in PM and I'll post them in a future blog for all too see or just go ahead and post your attack pattern below.

playing the oldies

I haven't been posting recently, I've been pretty busy at work but for the last couple of days I been at home and I completely dedicated it too catching up on a few games I missed out on the first time around.

Saints row 2 was the first game, I did buy this as a day one release way back when it first came out but because I was still engrossed in GTA IV and at the time I felt like saints row was just a poor imitation. I couldn't have been more wrong, although both games share similar traits, open world "gangster" games with carjacking and combat mission's saints row doesn't take itself as serious as Rockstar's saga.

trouble in stillwater?

What inspired me too buy this again was my son , his unrelenting enthusiasm for the game means that he constantly plays on it whenever he gets the chance so I decided to jump in and play some co-op with him over Xbox Live.

Doing co-op missions is great but the bulk of the fun in this game comes from the players themselves, between missions we would literally just cruise around making trouble and doing stunts, at one point I had me on the ground taking out squads of police with a solid mixture of RPG and assault rifle, just as the pressure was getting up beyond what I could handle an attack helicopter appears over the crest of the nearby high rise and peppers the police squads with .50cal and missile fire. My son then landed the chopper and I jumped in and took control of the guns, our getaway was short lived however as my son decides to jump out of the copter as we pass over the hideout leaving plummeting towards the concrete jungle. A short parachute ride and base jump later and I'm safely back on terra firma miles from anywhere with only an extensive arsenal of weapons and a bunch of random pedestrians and vehicles to keep me entertained, can you guess what happened next? :P

One amazing thing about the game is that it doesn't place artificial constraints on the players distance from each other so literally the entire island is open for exploration missions and distraction mini games can be done in co-op or solo. So you and a friend can have a lot of fun teaming up or just chatting as you wreak havoc.

A great game, I think I will post a review later on tonight if I get time.

The second game I decide to play was Smackdown versus Raw 2009, I have shamelessly neglected the last few releases and the first thing I noticed when I loaded up this one was the complete lack of developments in the games engine since it first was released on the current gen.

the last ride!!

In fact in many ways the game has taken two steps backwards the career mode which at one point was a highlight of the game has been toned down to a series of uneventful ladders which you simply score points in , score enough get a belt match win and move on to another belt. I remember when you started off fighting for your WWE contract and the story followed your rise through the ranks and subsequent shot at the title. You would have a storyline and make friends and enemies in the shows, which were presented just like its TV counterpart. It makes me sad that the series has gone stale.

As a final question can anyone recommend any older games I may have missed ? i welcome any suggestions.

Fans of Xenomorphs

At this very moment I am sitting and watching Aliens, the sequel to the hit film Alien. It is by far my favorite film of all time, what makes this film so good is the introduction of the colonial marines, badasses who travel the galaxy taking on threats to humanity.

I for one had been excited about 2 games recently, the release of the slightly disappointing AVP game has now passed me by without the slightest hint of interest and I just found out that the colonial marine game has been cancelled.

to start a trip down memory lane I thought I would share my history with the beloved HR Giger designed Xenomorph and his little buddy the face hugger.

Aliens: The Computer Game/1987 Amstrad CPC464

Watch out Gorman!!

The first game I ever owned which featured the wall climbing extraterrestrials was this Amstrad game, your job was to move the six survivors through the facility to safety, fighting the aliens and eventually killing the queen. The game was part squad shooter, part survival horror and all round hard game to beat.

Each squad member had to be moved separately though the game and for its time the graphics where quite nice though most of the time all you would see was walls and doors, don't underestimate the scary factor every door you open would possibly lead you into an encounter with an alien and giving that you had very limited ammo. Each fight you got into was likely to be your last.

The game was absolutely huge as well with upwards of 30 floors and each floor having hundreds of interlinking rooms and corridors which led you too the elevator to the next floor.

Great game which brought the theme of the movie to the home consoles without losing that sense of horror and spectacle, though certainly doesn't hold up by today's standards.

Alien 3/1993 Sega Genesis

Go for the headshot ripley

A great side scrolling shooter in the same vane as Contra, the game lets you play as Ripley as she fights her way through tons of the aliens and rescues survivors along the way. The game sets you in the same prison ship featured in the films and has you fighting through mess halls, prison cells and even the alien nest.

This game wasn't that difficult and featured a more gun heavy game play than the aliens game but was a ton of fun to play.

Alien Trilogy/1996 Playstation

shotgun to the tail, as effective as it is pretty

Most people will remember this one, a retelling of the original trilogy on one awesome disk. One of the highlights of the original Playstation in my opinion and for me at least the first chance to fight the alien menace in full 3d, the game is very similar to Doom in the way that it plays and is just as fun to play.

One of the best moments in this game was when face huggers would grab you and block your vision making you fire wildly at the other aliens as you struggled to stay in the game.

Finally I would like to just present this one screenshot for colonial marines and lament at the loss of what might have been one of the greatest aliens games of all time.

colonial marines preview shot

This list is in no way concise but these where just some of my favourites. Let me know what your thoughts are on the recent AVP game or even the cancelled marines game.

bioshock save game epic fail and more

What's happening out in internet land?

For me the answer to this is murder, this week I killed a lot of virtual people on modern warfare 2, halo 3, crackdown, operation flashpoint and the ever giving Bioshock 2.

Big thanks to all the Gamespotters who added me and joined me for modern warfare on Monday/Tuesday. Tntking and Tmoney420 we got some excellent games together and had a blast playing the team deathmatch.

I busted out my old ODST disk and had a hard time readjusting to the playstyle, though still fun to get a couple of games of big team splockets and I missed vehicles in shooters they add a whole other element to the destruction.

Bioshock 2 has disappointed me, my save game was lost and i ended up losing a bunch of gameplay time. Full details in the spoiler tag
I was just finished the fontaine futuristics part of the game and had upgraded a few plasmids to their level 3 variants and with the perfect mix of tonics I was finally starting to feel powerful like a big daddy should. I went to the last splicer to harvest Adam in the level before I headed out to the next part which I know is quite near the end of the game. I set down my little sister and all of Eleanor appeared in a flashback and the game got stuck in an endless loop of setting the sister down and the red flashback screen meaning i had to restart the game and all of my save games except 1 which was for the second area of the game where gone.
It was almost like it reverted to a previous save, so for now i'm done with Bioshock.

I'm not posting so much atm but I'm still reading your blogs using my phones RSS reader , I can't comment from there but I will do my best.

Join me on Xbox Live

For the next 3 days i will be on xbox live for most of the time.

Disappointed by X10

Playing Final Fantasy XIII at X10

This week as you may have noticed Microsoft has been holding an invite only event in San Francisco. The reason I assume you have noticed it is the huge amount of media frenzy it's been generating on gaming sites all across the web.

I have been looking on with interest over the course of the event and have eagerly been awaiting the expected barrage of screenshots, gameplay and big announcements that usually come with events of this type. I have therefore been disappointed as Microsoft's Event has simply boiled down to being a series of uneventful release date announcements and a handful of screenshots. The highlight of the week so far has been the release of a Halo: Reach vidoc.

Let's look at the announcements so far

Halo: Reach... No solid release date but the good news is that they will be making the beta available in the summer for Halo: ODST owners, the only new news is that you will require your ODST disk to play the beta.

Alan Wake... finally a release date May 18th.

Dead rising 2... August release but Xbox 360 users will be able to buy a special prologue called case zero which ties together the first and second games, I'm personally not sure how to feel about this as the developer has said that this will act as the games demo, I don't like paying for demos.

Modern Warfare 2... Map pack coming spring.

Final Fantasy XIII... special-edition bundle with a 250GB hard drive, two wireless controllers, exclusive add-ons for the game, and a copy of the title for $400 on March 9.Does this mean owners of existing 360's will have to fork out for a new console if they want the exclusive add-ons?

Splinter cell conviction… release date set for April 13, is this even news? They already told us this

Lost planet 2… Set for May 18 release and you can play as Gears of War characters and Albert Wesker. Pretty sure there was a video to this effect on my dashboard a while ago

Block party… basically a busy march on XBLA with releases for Perfect Dark, Toy Soldiers and Scrap Metal, A similar event to last year's summer of arcade.

This year releases for Crackdown 2, DLC for left 4 dead 2 and Natal.

I for one have been seriously disappointed by this and I am still sort of angry that the developers have been showing off working game footage at the show and releasing more substantial information that we as the game buying public are not privy too, this event stinks of Microsoft buying good favor with the review sites because as far as information trickling down to the eventual end users a Spreadsheet would have done the trick.

What are your feelings on the X10 event ?

Bioshock Multiplayer explained

After yesterdays brief note on Bioshocks multiplayer I decided to write something a bit more in-depth as I notice around the forums and other places on the net there is a lot of interest on how it works.

My initial impressions of Bioshocks multiplayer was pretty poor, the problem however was not with the game but with my perception of it. Initially I felt like them game was too basic too provide much fun but after a quick read of the manual and checking out a few tips online I went back and give it another shot and second time around I am enjoying all the little nuances that make the game great.

First of all the maps are all locations from the first game which brings back a lot of memories for me, some good times in these maps, Anyone who played through the original will definitely remember Arcadia and its creepy apparitions, this same map appears as a battle ground this time around and as maps in this game go it's one of my favourites with plenty of big open rooms surrounded by small tunnels and corridors great for tense fire fights and sniping with the crossbow. Other maps such as mercury suites are small cramped affairs which focus on a central chamber where all the action occurs, in the central chamber there is a large pillar 3 stories high with a series of balconies surrounding it which forces the players out in the open with everyone vying for control of the good spots like the high balconies or the lower alcoves which are easily defensible.

The game play reminds me of classic FPS games such as unreal tournament or even quake 3. Rather than one shot kills and instant death grenades players will absorb quite a bit of punishment before dying meaning that you are relying on using your plasmids and weapons consistently throughout the fight rather than trying to get the jump and relying on your twitch skills. A game for campers this is not, like the previously mentioned games in order to stay alive you need to keep moving and play smart.

The weapons are well balanced, the pistol although weak can be fired rapidly and is incredibly accurate even at range, grenade launchers are powerful but slow to reload, crossbow is accurate to fire has a moderate fire rate and takes ages to reload, shotgun is great up close and terrible at long range and the machine gun is your typical weak but fast firing spray gun.

The unique take on the gameplay comes in the form of the plasmids, though the plasmids are relatively weak when compared with their single player counter parts in the game they can be used to give you the edge over the competition.

The plasmids and their uses:

Incinerate- sets target on fire and take damage over time, stopping them from regenerating health, the downside though is that anyone you hot will gain a faster attack rate and move faster. Friendly players who have been frozen can be thawed by casting this at them.

Winterblast - freezes the opponent making them slower and take more damage, frozen players can also be shattered with a melee hit. Cast this on friendly players who have been set alight to put them out.

Electro bolt- temporarily stuns an enemy and does a small amount of damage, hitting a stunned enemy will kill them in one hit.

Aero dash- player does a quick dash in the direction they are facing, helpful to move across areas quickly, though if you hit a player they will be knocked back and briefly incapacitated.

Geyser trap- you can use this too place a trap that throws the enemy in the air, enemy can sustain fall damage or damage from hitting roofs etc. Also this is very disorientating for players who aren't expecting it. You can also use this to jump up between levels and reach out of the way places.

Telekinesis- not really sure what all this can do but you can definitely pick up objects and hit people with them for damage...

Houdini- turns invisible though you will be unable to attack.

Insect swarm - deals minor damage to the target over time, using this plasmid on an enemy will blur their vision making it difficult for them to attack you consistently.

How you use the plasmids in combat is very important as you only get too pick two of them you need to choose a good combination for the tasks you face, some of the powers such as incinerate can be charged for extra damage/duration and other combinations can be combined to make them more effective. Some examples of this are mixing a geyser trap with winterblast which freezes an opponent before shooting them in the air, add in a low ceiling and you got a smashed opponent.aero shock or freeze an opponent and then aero dash them for an instant kill.

The maps themselves also have environmental features such as oil slicks which increase the damage done by incinerate and water which increases the damage and area of your electro bolt.

There are several game types ranging from traditional free for all, team deathmatch, king of the hill and one flag of course they all have rapture themes so team deathmatch becomes civil war and king of the hill becomes turf war.

The other major addition to the gameplay is the big daddy in most game modes a big daddy suit will be spawned into the map allowing one lucky player to become a big daddy for a while. The big daddy has a ton of health but can't regenerate so they are tough to take down and will require some teamwork to take down quickly. The big daddy is slower than the other players so use plasmids that further disadvantage him, wintersblast and electro bolt work well and make sure to keep moving out of his line of vision and pumping shots into him.

The big daddy also has some moves of his own, stomp will stun all close range enemies allowing you to make mince meat out of the little people, instead of plasmids the big daddy also has a finite amount of proximity grenades which you can just leave scattered around the maps (the maps are small enough that someone will eventually run into it), lastly but certainly not least your standard firearm , the rivet gun is powerful and accurate and can rapid fire bolts until it overheats.

Combining all this and smart use of the weapons will help you to rack up the kills.

Overall the experience in the multiplayer seems highly polished and with the pedigree of the programmers you wouldn't expect any different the only thing that feels tacked on is the storyline which is little more than audio tapes explaining your latest upgrades and the characters motivations. I think the multiplayer is a great addition to the Bioshock game.
