@finalkain @byzantine_chant It does, it just doesn't manifest itself in a particularly obvious way. Like, if you upgrade your armor few times, maybe you'll start noticing that you're able to take five hits from a boss instead of four. You always have to pay close attention to see any benefits, especially when you're still learning everything.
Fair points. I've always been of the opinion that the Souls series could be better about explaining the basics, if only so newcomers don't end up stumbling around with no idea what they're doing. I went into Demon's Souls with the intent to not use any guides or look at the wikis, but that quickly turned out to be a bad idea. I mean, I still enjoyed it, but would have been nice to not be practically forced to look toward wikis for assistance on understanding base-level concepts.
Dark Souls 2 does sort of address that -- the select/back button brings up a pop-up message explaining each stat's purpose -- but that information could be presented better. Ideally they'd have something in the tutorial area explain that stuff. I recall Demon's Souls doing that to some extent (there was a section of the Nexus filled to the brim with developer messages), so I don't see why they couldn't do that again.
Anyway, great review. Always nice to get a newcomers perspective on these games.
If I didn't have to pick one up for work, I probably would have held off. Apart from Titanfall, none of the exclusive software for it interests me, so it hasn't seen much use since picking it up.
Hearing this was a horror game put me off from it (I really, really don't like horror), but to hear the story is good and handled well is enough to make me reconsider. Sounds intriguing.
