@mastermetal777: My only real problem with 12 was I hated the main characters and found them bland. That said I didn't mind the combat and I love how it was stock full of sidequests.

@spike6958:
Yeah that's what interest me in FF 9. I don't think the slow combat will bother me I just like that the characters all look interesting and it sounds like it has an engaging story from what I've heard.
@spike6958: Yeah it seems my favorites are the less popular ones (FF 3 and FF 4). I still need to try out FF 5 and FF 9 which I have high hopes for. Either way the Final Fantasy series does come off as hit or miss.
I ask this not to troll but because I'm very fond of Jrpg's (especially the Dragon Quest series) and FF 6 is often hailed as the greatest Jrpg ever. That said I wasn't really impressed with it perhaps partially because of the massive hype but really I hated the second half of the game where it went from an engaging story to being just sidequests. I get that these sidequests to regain your people and build your army was good for closing characters individual stories but really for me it just killed the momentum of the game and I felt really bored doing it. I don't mind sidequests at all in fact I love them but I don't like going from an engaging storyline and all of a sudden sidequests are the main drive of the game hell even the final boss fight just felt like another sidequest to me. There was no real build up to it.
Also another thing that I didn't like is how most of the towns and places you visit felt dull and bland. Part of the great thing about Jrpgs is visiting new and exciting places and exploring exotic dungeons. There weren't a lot of interesting places in this game. Also I hate hoatthe magic system was broken in that you could give anyone any magic therefore destroying much of their individuality as a fighter.
As for the characters they were OK a few were were pretty bad (Gau) but for the most part I just didn't feel invested in them but I didn't hate them all like I did in FF 12. As for the villain Kefka I like that he had a presence through the game instead of just appearing at the end out of nowhere. Still I don't find him as revolutionary as Psaro and I also feel Pokey Minch did Kefka's formula better than Kefka.
Again not trolling. I make this thread because FF 6 fans seem to bite my head off or anyone's head off when they mentioned they weren't impressed with FF 6. I once got my ass chewed for saying I preferred Earthbound soundtrack to that of FF 6.
@texasgoldrush: OK I understand that (Though I think Kefka is cartoonish compared to Psaro) but how does that make it better? It's just a different style of story telling. It might've been a new idea at the time but rpg's were generally coming up with new innovations to further the the potential of the genre.
@texasgoldrush: What do you mean realistic scenarios? Is Kefka destroying the world a realistic scenario? Is battling monsters aboard airships realistic scenarios? I don't see what you mean at all your going to have to give examples to illustrate your point.
@texasgoldrush: OK now you're just making an ass of yourself. What does having low amounts of Fantasy have to do with anything? How does having minimal Fantasy have anything to do with the quality of the game? Also pretty damn sure Earthbound was much less a fantasy game than FF 6 since it focused more on a modern setting and was generally more Sci Fi in nature. Chrono Trigger also had a nice mix between sci Fi and Fantasy. Hell wtf are you talking about FF 6 is no less a fantast y game than previous FF games. Honestly if you don't like Fantasy anyway then Jrpgs aren't for you.
@texasgoldrush: No need to make an ass of yourself dude. I'm not alone in this opinion in fact it's a common complaint about FF 6 that in the second half the story was non existent. Now I wouldn't go that far however it did kill the momentum for me. I don't care if the critics praised it or if it was influential it simply wasn't fun. I didn't care much about the characters either tbh. They weren't bad or well most were fine (Gau wasn't) but for the most part I didn't care for them. That's probably less that they were poorly written characters and more that they simply didn't connect with me. Still point is I didn't care much for FF 6 outside the Phantom Train section of the game. Not saying you can't like it but the fact that you insult me by saying I have no taste makes me think your agitated and more interested in shoving your opinion down my throat than debating.
@texasgoldrush: You're allowed to disagree with me however I found the second half of the game dreadful and nothing you say can change that. Now I have nothing against non linear gameplay or sidequests but I don't like the way they executed it in this game. I was pretty hooked into the story beforehand but by the end of the game I just didn't care about it anymore and was glad to be done.
That said even if it didn't ruin the second half I still doubt I'd like the game as much as other SNES classics such as Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Dragon Quest 5, or Super Mario Legend of the Seven Stars.
