Ya know, if this were any sort of respected video game that players enjoyed, they'd flip the lid and scream this guy was right. That he DESERVES to stand up and defend his work or suggest it might not be so bad.

To those claiming that the "most respected" sites gave it low scores: those same sites game Mass Effect 3 high praise. To be fair, gamers are being pretty stupid about that one, deciding that a 2-3 hour ending in a game TOTALLY NEGATES the 100+ hours they put in prior to that, but still. Is anybody going to defend these "respected sites" from their scores on ME3? No, I'd imagine they screamed "conspiracy" at that one. So how can you say there's no conspiracy here?

REALITY CHECK: You guys didn't like the game and that's why you're bashing them for defending their own work. Any rational human being would defend the work s/he did, if not because s/he was proud of it than because s/he actually wants to STAY EMPLOYED, and you all treat it like it's a crime because the critics didn't enjoy it. Let me ask you guys something: if your company is known for putting out games that average 2/10 and then you release a game that averages 6/10, should you be ashamed of yourself? YOU'VE JUST JUMPED 4 POINTS WITH YOUR LATEST RELEASE! In the world of gamers, you SHOULD feel ashamed, because you've produced something "mediocre," and mediocrity in the gaming industry is just unacceptable. You should only celebrate if you score higher than a 7 out of 10 on average.

Amazing that gamers want to scream about a lack of originality in the industry, that it's all just sequels and garbage now, but have no interest in taking any risks themselves. Like on a NEW CONTROLLER, which actually requires one to learn how to use something they've been using "comfortably" for years. Or perhaps on a game that doesn't score well with "respected critics" that are pretty much just the ones that have been around the longest, like the companies people complain about (EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and anything else that produces a bad game or has any interest in keeping its business afloat).

Here's a thought: try listening to someone besides Gamespot and IGN once in a while. Try not judging a magazine's score based strictly on its name. (Like Nintendo Power, which has not been employed by Nintendo for 4 years now.) Try actually looking at a review aggregator website like Gamerankings and seeing what the average actually is (76.85%) instead of deciding it's "mediocre" based on a few websites you visit cause of habit giving it bad reviews, the 5 or so "respected sites" that only count in your narrow views of the world. And while we're at it define "mediocre," cause the way gamers define it seems to indicate that nothing less than a 9 is worthy of any sort of praise.

Rant over.

@ABakedAlien I wasn't aware we were arguing. I thought it was merely a discussion. At least for me. But if you didn't read, that's your loss, not mine.

Just keep in mind that the unwillingness to take the time to read something extensive is the EXACT sort of laziness gamers constantly heap upon allegedly "bad" developers without the slightest proof. I guess when gamers do it, it's okay, huh?

Either way, no hate. Peace. :)

@ABakedAlien Forgive me, but you're pretty much dead wrong about the Wii's library. It WAS more lackluster than the library for 360 and PS3, but it had FAR more than "10 good games." Granted, "good" is a subjective term, but there were actually a lot of unusual games that weren't really like anything else on the market that simply didn't get advertised all that well. Let me show you:

-Boom Blox and it's sequel

-Deadly Creatures

-Excitebots: Trick Racing

-No More Heroes and it's sequel

-Cursed Mountain

-Muramasa: The Demon Blade

-Little King's Story

-A Boy and His Blob

-Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

-Fragile Dreams

-Madworld

-Trauma Center: New Blood and Trauma Team

-House of the Dead Overkill

-Dead Space: Extraction

-Flingsmash

-Opoona

-Elebits

-Epic Mickey

-de Blob

-Blastworks: Build. Trade. Destroy.

-Lost in Shadow

Again, it's debatable how many of these games are actually "good"--in particular, Flingsmash, Opoona, and Elebits aren't really impressive experiences and Fragile Dreams, Deadly Creatures, and Epic Mickey all had significant flaws--but there's still nothing quite like these games on the market. And that was supposed to be the point of the Wii. Even if some of these games could have worked better on a standard controller, the fact is they showed up on Wii because it fostered the IDEA of trying different things.

But even if we were to focus only on "quality" experiences, your claim would still be incorrect. Let's try adding in some less innovative 3rd party titles and premium Nintendo titles:

-Super Mario Galaxy

-Super Mario Galaxy 2

-Super Paper Mario

-Mario Kart Wii

-New Super Mario Bros. Wii

-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

-Metroid: Other M (ignore this one if you want)

-Kirby's Epic Yarn

-Donkey Kong Country Returns

-Zelda: Twilight Princess

-Zelda: Skyward Sword

-Sin and Punishment: Star Successor

-Super Smash Bros. Brawl

-Red Steel 2

-Sonic Colors

-Monster Hunter Tri

-Goldeneye 007

-Tatsunoko Vs Capcom

-Bully: Scholarship Edition

Count the games on this list alone and we're almost doubling your estimate of 10. Count several of the games from the "unique" list and we're pushing four times that number.

I'm not saying the Wii had more quality titles than the 360 or PS3, or that it was the better system. In fact, just in case you want to pull this card, I'm a FORMER Nintendo fanboy who has since shifted much of his allegiance to Xbox and abandoned much of his former fanboyism. However, this doesn't mean the Wii was the gigantic slouch in terms of games that everyone has painted it to be. People just had to LOOK HARDER and BE PATIENT, which most gamers simply aren't willing to do even though they complain about the absurd amounts of money companies "waste" on advertising and other expenses. I would honestly pick Wii over PS3 in terms of games, though that doesn't mean PS3 is a "bad" system either.

The Wii set out to be something different. IMO, it succeeded in that goal, both in terms of the style of gameplay it introduced and the experiences themselves. The "quality" of the results can be debated, as some games played better with normal controllers and others weren't different in "good" ways, but I think your estimate of "10" grossly understates what was there. Maybe not what was ADVERTISED as being there, but what was actually there was much greater than that.

@shantd From what I've read, Rising was actually quietly canceled because Kojima's team couldn't figure out how to make the engine work with the concept, which I believe completely. Then they resurrected it at Platinum, who has expertise with that style of game.

As for Castlevania, perhaps it wasn't Kojima himself, but his studio WAS involved in the reboot of Castlevania. It's the 360 game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which oddly Koji Igarashi has no part of. Meanwhile a sequel is on the way, which may or may not be done by Kojima's team. (Honestly don't know.)

I hope you're right and they're actually spread thin, not because I like the idea of delays, but because I don't want to think Kojima will be doing MGS games for the rest of his life. For that matter, why the $%#@ haven't they dropped "Solid" from the title?! The story of Solid Snake was OVER in MGS4, and the original games were called METAL GEAR, not METAL GEAR SOLID. Plus the upcoming Platinum release HAS dropped "Solid" from the title. Why haven't they gone back to calling it Metal Gear, or at least added a new subtitle?

Here's to the new IP, ZOE, and Castlevania. IMO MGS can wait. Best of luck to his development team. :)

@TohouAsura @WolfGrey @foxrock66 Actually, they're right WolfGrey. Portable Ops and Peace Walker counted as main entries, yet they weren't numbered. So yes, this might not be a main series entry. But like I said to shantd, I just find it unlikely that Kojima is somehow working on this, while simultaneously coming up with ideas for MGS5, while working on ZOE 3, while putting together Sbatcher (a domain name he registered that's related to an old game called "Snatcher"), and putting together a new IP at the same time. And don't forget that his studio also made the recent Castlevania reboot and may have a hand in the upcoming sequel as well. I think it's more likely that he started the new IP--supposed to be open world with very few cutscenes--and Konami pressured him to make it another MGS game. Because I find it hard to believe a single developer is working on more than one big project at a time.

But all I'm doing is speculating here, and I'm not in a position to say one way or the other. Maybe he IS working on a bunch of stuff right now, and if so, good for him! The industry needs hard workers right now, and he's been fairly consistent with his quality. Thank you for calling me on my assumption. :)

@shantd You're right. I am assuming. Maybe I'm wrong. I just find it highly unlikely in this day, with this sort of economic climate, with the high costs--both monetary and opportunity--of game development, that his team is working on more than one project. These days most games don't even get yearly sequels anymore (except sports games) because development is so expensive and hard. And Kojima certainly took his time between 3 and 4, so I'm guessing we won't be seeing this for at least another 2 years. If he's got his teams working on several other projects in the meantime...let's just say that I don't think Konami would LET him do that.

But I don't work in the industry, so I could certainly be wrong. Thank you for calling me on that. :)

I wish I could say I was super excited about this, but I'm not. When Kojima announced that he'd be working on an open-world game a few months ago, he made it sound like a new IP, and ALSO said he was thinking of ideas for MGS5. But now we discover that both projects were actually the SAME.

Kojima made clear on more than one occasion that Solid Snake's story would end with MGS4. Yet now we've got even MORE games coming in the franchise. Why? Why can't he work on an original property like I believe he mentioned wanting to? Or at least drop "Solid" from the name?

Not saying it doesn't sound wicked. I'm just disappointed that ONCE AGAIN Kojima is doing MGS. I'm ready for more ZOE or something new.

I'm happy to hear Krome is back in business and working on another Ty game. Really enjoyed the others from last gen, even if they were a bit underdeveloped at times. (The draw distance in Ty 2 was absurdly bad IMO)

@Donut_User @DarthLod There are a couple potential solutions to this problem. For all the talk of "greed" on the part of game makers, in England companies get a percentage of used game sales back from retailers. The other alternative is to make it illegal to sell a game used in the first 3 months of release.

Not saying I necessarily favor either of the above options. Just trying to think of compromises. Though I know, from experience, that gamers are NOT big on compromise.

@shonnutting88 Perhaps the endings in ME3 were far from what was promised, but that doesn't mean EA paid anybody off. Though I can't tell you what to say, I'd appreciate you refraining from that kind of claim without some clear proof. But that's just my opinion.
