Ok guys...we all love NCIS (those on the NCIS forums anyway) and sometimes we get inspired to take that and write stories, called Fan FICTION. The point of fan fiction (at least for me) is to take the characters and have them do things that we'd like to see but that the writers won't necessarily ever put on a script. I have written several such stories and have posted them here and on my live journal. All my stories have been based off of NCIS and it's characters and several times throughout my posting I note that I own nothing to do with the show or characters and basically it's all for entertainment purposes. I make up original characters and give them made up names and throw them in the story for good measure (because sometimes I need the federal investigators to INVESTIGATE something). Is it possible to come up with a name someone already has? Absolutely! Does it mean I know them or anything about them? No way. I just pull names out of the air and sound them out and put them together in the story. This brings me to the subject of my rant: my last story, Just to See Her. Today was an ordinary day and then I logged into my e-mail account and found I had 2 comments on my Live Journal...that has never happened before. So I click on over and read them... One is a comment from a psychic investigating the disappearance of a Cole Jackson in Texas. OK, that's plausible, I can understand where the search of the name would bring up my story. BUT, if you KNOW its fan fiction, which if he actually read the story he would know that, then why would you be wasting your time reading the story when you are supposed to be looking for a missing person??? If you are psychic, wouldn't you know that I have nothing to do with him being missing and that my story is about FICTIONAL characters and events??? And the reply to the comment was just as baffling. Yeah, we take storylines and use them in our fics...if there were no storylines, there would be no fan fictions out there... I don't mind comments people, I love them and live for them. But when they come like this, from an anonymous poster who leaves his e-mail address I must wonder: What/who is this person and are they for real? If you are willing to post your e-mail address, then why not put your name up and own your comment? But take it from me: from here on out, I will add to the disclaimer I put on stories and have them read like this -- I do not own NCIS, its characters, storylines or the actors themselves. I have nothing worth major value to sue over. All my stories are adapted from the series (because I'm using the characters) but they are FICTIONAL. Any resemblance to any person, place or thing is purely coincidental and not made to upset anyone. If you do not like this statement, please do not read my stories. Rant over. I am not implying in any way that a missing persons case is something that shouldn't be taken seriously. It should be taken very seriously and all steps to locate the person should be explored. However, if you read something that is recognized to be fiction, you do not need to share the story with the person's family. Honestly, there could be thousands of stories out there with that name. Is this person going to comment/write each of the writers who named their character this name? Jen
