Patience in gaming and changed standards

We, as gamers, live in a high-speed community, where things happen every second, exciting things, depressing things, fun things. As natural progression goes, this has transferred over to gaming. Adrenaline-pumping FPSs, wild multiplayer death matches and nerve-jerking horror games. In their own right, these mechanics are incredible if done right, but is this a sign of less patient among gamers? I remember years ago when I was grinding for EXP in Star Ocean 2, mostly because I enjoyed it. I remember watching LONG cutscenes of dialogue in FFX and absorbing all content with sincere enthusiasm. Cutscenes, however, are now almost a thing of the past in the more modern games and grinding is now a bad thing in any RPG.

I have been noticing this myself. I find myself at time irate while watching cutscenes that have little significance to the bigger picture, I find myself getting slightly annoyed by constant battles. When I sink myself into the game, this mostly disappears, but it still worries me to a degree. Are consumers overreaching in terms of expectation and constant excitement? The DS has been doing a brilliant thing in releasing remakes of classic games, giving oneself a nostalgic sucker punch that wakes one up from a dream of overflowing adrenaline and pumping gushes of a certain red fluid people have become well acquainted with. I guess what I'm trying to say is that mainstream games need to be balanced with games of a calmer aesthetic. There are modern games that fall in the latter category, but they have to be searched out to be able to find the enjoyment within.

I'm really just ranting randomly and magnifying a rather small problem, but it is an interesting prospect to think about. Does anyone experience a lack of patience in their gaming experience?

Reviews

Hey, anyone who bothers to read this. This is just a slight announcement about my reviews. I will, in due time, get to reviewingi all of the games in my library (of games), so stay tuned for detailed and unbiased reviews of both recent and old games.

Have a nice day, Calvinsora (Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, Sora from Kingdom Hearts if someone is wondering what this means).

PS3, best exclusive yet

I was wondering what was everyone's favourite PS3 exclusive. Mine would be MGS4, but I would also like to see another game (to those who choose MGS4). For me, it's LittleBig Planet.
