I've been a gamer my whole life; I've played on both consoles and pc's. I can honestly say, I haven't had any interest playing on a PC for years now. Part of the problem with pc's is the maintenance required to get the desired performance. Not only would it be expensive to get an 8-core PC right now with 8gb of dedicated gddr 5 ram, but it would be a process to continually update and manually install graphics cards every couple of years or so - or maybe even more frequently. Not only is that undesirable for many, but its simply a headache having to always look at specs in order to get that "ultra" performance everyone wants.
On top of the hardware and specs issue, you also have the fact that using a mouse and keyboard for a game just flat out sucks balls. Sure, you can mod a 360 or ps3 controller etc., but most people are just flat out too lazy or simply don't have the time or know-how to do it. They want a play-ready experience, and often, that can only be achieved with consoles.
Then of course you have the exclusives on consoles which you just can't get on a PC. There's really no need to get into this, so I wont. Suffice it to say, Gears of War and Halo were great experiences - not having them on the PC kinda sucks.
And lastly, and perhaps most troubling for me, is the fact that gaming primarily on a PC can flat out get you in trouble. Why? Well, maybe its just me, but with a PC I have a strong urge to just pirate the absolute F out of everything - including games. Why pay 60 bucks for a game when you can just download that crap for free. Not only do you risk persecution by doing this, but you also risk your connection getting throttled by your ISP, or even worse, getting booted. Its just not worth it, but often times, people don't realize it until its too late.
I guess for me, it just comes down to convenience and ease of gaming. PC's do have some great games and graphics, but the pitfalls and maintenance required to optimize said games is simply too time consuming or confusing for many. I'll stick with my PS4, 46" LED, and DS4 controller, its just easier.
All I can say is the Xbox better have more than 4 cores at this point, otherwise Sony will have a huge advantage over Microsoft with its 8 core architecture.
While they have made a lot of Marios and Resident Evils etc, those games tend to be single player in nature; new installments are required in those particular series' because you can only play the same campaign so many times. Whereas the COD series releases a new game every single year that sees the bulk of its gameplay online. And what we have seen from both Infinity and Treyarch is a complete unwillingness to deviate from the existing formula. As such, the series has developed a been there done that feel...
Also, compared to the rest of the first-person military shooters out there, COD still offers the most exciting online experience. Thus, everyone continues to play COD, and as a result, Activision continues to spit more games out. As long as there are no other viable first-person shooters out there to replace COD, were going to continue to get more and more or the same.
In a sense, we as consumers are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
